Welcome to Clark! August 23, 2013 Dear New Student, On behalf of all Clark students, faculty, administrators, and staff, we welcome you to Clark University and the Transfer Student Orientation program. We are very excited to finally welcome you in person! Transfer Student Orientation is designed to familiarize you with the Clark community and introduce you to life here on campus. During these first few days, you will have many opportunities to meet future classmates and friends while learning your way around. You will be able to discuss your academic and cocurricular interests with faculty, staff, and your peers as you discover the plethora of resources available at Clark. Transfer Student Orientation is filled with programs and activities to help you get settled and feel comfortable in your new surroundings. Some are designed to inform you about issues you may encounter during your college experience and the resources to assist you in addressing them; others will start you on your way toward embracing Clark s intellectual life, both in and out of the classroom. You have chosen to attend a wonderful institution with a rich and vibrant history. During your time here at Clark, we hope that you will have fascinating academic and cocurricular experiences as you look at the world and see it and yourself in new ways. PEER ADVISERS Programs in RED indicate a required activity for all incoming students. Your Peer Adviser will sign your registration sheet (located at the back of this booklet) to confirm that you have completed each required activity. This completed sheet will be required for you to attend the Black Light Dance on the last night of Transfer Student Orientation. In addition, if you miss a mandatory activity you will be required to meet with the Dean of Students or the Director of Student Leadership and Programming. Please carry your registration sheet with you and be careful not to misplace it. Following check-in, students are encouraged to use the morning to settle in to their new home. Feel free to ask Peer Advisers and Resident Advisers any questions. The Student Accounts Office Students who are required to clear financially must do so before moving into the residence halls. Please feel free to stop by if you have any general questions about your student account. In addition, the Cashier s Office will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to assist new students with financial clearance. The Financial Aid Office Please feel free to stop by to ask any general questions about financial aid, to check on the status of an application, or to complete any additional paperwork. Clark OneCard If you submitted a photo prior to arrival, your I.D. will be issued to you when you check in. If not, you can have your photo taken and receive your I.D. during this time. Please note that you need to present a photo I.D. (driver s license, passport, etc.) when picking up your OneCard. Computer Support Information Technology Services (ITS) staff will be available in the Academic Commons for computer support. Be sure to bring your laptop and power adapters. Bank Tabling Representatives from local banks will be on hand to answer questions and assist students with setting up bank accounts.

Clark President David Angel, Clark Undergraduate Student Council President Rian Watt 14, and Transfer Orientation Coordinator Stefanie Gough 14 will welcome you to the University and share their thoughts about the Clark experience. Professor Mark Miller, J.D., Ph.D., director of the Law and Society program, will lead the session. All Things Academic This program is specially designed to assist transfer students with their unique academic questions and concerns. as well as to keep you up to speed with Clark s academic policies and requirements. Clark 101 Campus Resources and Services Denise Darrigrand, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, and Mike McKenna, Director of Student Leadership and Programming, will share important information about all of the resources and services available on campus. This is a good opportunity to have questions answered and find out where to go when you need assistance. Bringing in the Bystander Participate in an on-line course provided by the Clark Anti-Violence Education (CAVE) program. This program will discuss dating violence and sexual assault, and how to safely act as a prosocial bystander. Peer Advising Group Meeting 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m. Center, Dining Hall Lunch Students must wear wristband to enter the Dining Hall. 1 2 p.m. Center, Lurie Conference Room Campus Safety Presentation Sgt. Mike Palermo of University Police (UP) will describe the role UP plays on campus. The discussion will introduce you to living on the Clark campus and in the City of Worcester. Additionally, Sgt. Palermo will discuss the residence halls access system, fire safety program, crime prevention team and Clark s EMS Squad.

After a brief presentation, students will have the opportunity to talk with peers about the occurrence of stalking on college campuses, and discuss steps to prevent its escalation. Reality 101 Code of Student Conduct As a Clark student, you need to know your rights and responsibilities. In this session you will be provided with an introduction to the Code of Student Conduct, focusing on our expectations of you as a member of the Clark community. Transfer Student Mix & Mingle Come join your fellow transfer students for a relaxing time on the Green. 6 8:15 p.m. Campus Green (Rain location: Dining Hall/Tilton Hall) Dinner Students must wear wristband. 8:30 10 p.m. Center, The Grind 11 p.m. 2 a.m. Center, Dining Hall Voices of Experience Panel & Social Meet current students who also transferred to Clark. Hear about their successes and struggles, and learn some tips and tricks from students who have been there. After, make some new friends and hear about life at Clark from some fellow upperclassmen in a low-key, casual environment. Guided Tour of the Goddard Library The Academic Commons (AC, on the plaza level of the Goddard Library) houses the Safety Escort Services, Computer Lab, ITS Help Desk, Jazzman s Café, a (nearly) 24/7 living room and other services. The second floor, where the library begins, has you guessed it librarians! Goddard has study spaces for both individuals and groups. Please meet at the Reference Desk on the 2nd floor to learn about the various services offered at the library; the tour will continue on the upper floors. Peer Advising Group Meeting This will be your last meeting with your PA and advising group. For Your Information WHEN IN DOUBT Ask your Peer Adviser, an Orientation Coordinator, Student Affairs staff, a Resident Adviser, the Dean of Students Office, or stop by Week One Headquarters in the University Center. WEEK ONE HEADQUARTERS Week One Headquarters is located on the first floor of the Higgins University Center. Headquarters will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, August 22 through Sunday, August 25. Stop by or call x7590. BANKS Representatives from local banks will be on campus August 23 and 24 to assist students in opening accounts. There is a TD Bank North ATM located next to Week One Headquarters in the Center. BOOKSTORE The Bookstore is located at 918 Main Street and carries textbooks, an assortment of school supplies, Clark clothing, and memorabilia. Bring your Clark OneCard for identification purposes. CAMPUS ACTIVITIES Once the semester begins, be sure to regularly check ClarkYou, L*IN*K, and the What s Happening at Clark? biweekly email (along with its corresponding Facebook page and twitter feed) for information about campus events, tickets, transportation, and local activities. You can find all of Clark s social media pages at clarku.edu/socialmedia. L*IN*K can be accessed through the ClarkYou campus portal. UNIVERSITY POLICE If you have any safety concerns, please stop by University Police, located in the basement of Bullock Hall, or call x7575. If you would like to have a van escort to an on- or off-campus location, stop by the Safety Escort Service Desk in the Academic Commons or call x7777. TELEPHONE ACCESS To reach an on-campus number from another campus phone, dial the last four digits. A telephone jack with dial tone is provided in each student room; students must bring their own telephone. Students have access to local and toll-free calls only. To reach an off-campus number, you must first dial 9-1-area code + number. For long distance you must use a prepaid calling card or your own cell phone. You may contact the Telecommunications Office (x7381) with questions.
TRANSPORTATION Taxis are available to Union Station (trains and buses) for about $8-$10. The two local cab companies are Yellow Cab at 508-754-3211 and Red Cab at 508-340-4637. Worcester Regional Transit Authority buses can be boarded outside the Main Street gates; schedules are available at the Information Desk. Student Council sponsors a shuttle to local malls on Fridays and Saturdays as well as a bus that goes to Boston every other Saturday. CLARK COMMUNITY THRIFT STORE The Clark Community Thrift Store (CCTS) is a student-founded, student-run venture that gets donations from Clark students, so everything it sells is tailored to you. Come shopping for thrifty bargains on everything you need, right across the street. Volunteers are always welcome at CCTS. We are a great community of frugal, environmentally conscious Clarkies.
