It is nt the Pre-Schl s plicy t care fr sick children, hwever the Pre- Schl will agree t administering medicine as part f maintaining a child s health and wellbeing r aiding a child s recvery frm illness. General Pints The fllwing dcument utlines the Setting s plicy regarding medicatin. The plicy is updated annually and members f staff are expected t re-read the plicy nce it has been updated.
Medicatin Plicy and Prcedure Parents/carers f children at the Pre-Schl are made aware that all the Pre-Schl s plicies are available fr them t read n the Pre-Schl s website and that a hard cpy is als available frm the Pre-Schl ffice. Parents/carers are infrmed via the Pre- Schl newsletter when plicies have been updated. Prcedures Prescriptin Medicatin The setting is insured t administer medicatin t children. Firstly, children must be well enugh t attend the setting. Then, in accrdance with the Supprting Pupils at Schl with Medical Cnditins 2014, Medicines shuld nly be taken t settings when essential; that is, where it wuld be detrimental t a child s health if the medicine were nt administered during the setting day. Only medicatin which has been prescribed by a dctr r ther medically qualified persn will be administered t a child. Medicatin cntaining aspirin must be prescribed by a dctr. The parent/carer must cmplete a cnsent frm befre the Pre-Schl will accept medicatin which needs t be administered by staff. The cmpleted cnsent frms are kept in a Medicatins Flder which is stred with in the kitchen area. The Medicatin Cnsent Frm cntains the fllwing infrmatin: Date Full name f child Date f birth Name f medicatin and strength Expiry date f medicatin Dsage Time and frequency f administratin Hw the medicatin is t be stred, batch number and expiry date Any pssible side effects that may be expected When the child was last administered medicine Parental acknwledgement Staff signature Members f staff will nly administer medicine in the presence anther f member f staff. The expiry date f the mediatin will be checked befre it is administered. A recrd is made f what medicatin has been administered and when n the cnsent frm and signed by bth members f staff. The parent/carer will be asked t sign this when cllecting their child. Shuld a child refuse t take their medicatin, this will be recrded and the parent/carer wuld be cntacted and invited t cme in and administer the medicatin themselves. Shuld a child becme ill whilst at the setting, the prcedure as detailed in the Illness and Injury Plicy and Prcedure wuld be fllwed. If there is a child with lng-term r cmplex medical needs, the setting will wrk with the parents/carers and medical prfessinals t develp a suitable Care Plan t Last Update: 04 March 2016 Page 2
Medicatin Plicy and Prcedure meet the child s needs. Members f staff will be made aware f the Care Plan and cpies f the Care Plan will be readily accessible t staff. The Care Plan will include the fllwing infrmatin: Details f the child s cnditin Special requirements e.g. dietary requirements Pre-activity precautins Any side effects f the medicatin Shuld specific training be required fr members f staff regarding administering medicatin, this wuld be arranged as necessary (e.g. Epi-Pen training) Due t their age/stage f develpment children at the setting are nt permitted t carry r administer their wn medicatin, including asthma inhalers. There are always several members f staff n duty wh have an up t date paediatric first aid qualificatin. Strage f Medicatin All medicatin is stred in a lcked kitchen area which is nt accessible t children. Medicatin is kept in a designated area f the kitchen s that it is easily accessible t staff. Medicatin f each child is stred in a cntainer with the child s name clearly displayed. A list f medicatin expiry dates is displayed n the inside f the mediatin cupbard and checked regularly. There are facilities t stre medicines in a refrigeratr. Such medicines must be in an air tight cntainer. Only members f staff have access t the refrigeratr. All medicatin must be clearly labelled with the child s name, name and dsage f the medicatin and the frequency f administratin. Medicatin will nly be accepted in the riginal cntainer as dispensed by a pharmacist in accrdance with the prescriber s instructins. Any un-used r expired medicatin will be returned t the parent/carer fr prper dispsal. Any medicatin required by members f staff must be kept in the secure kitchen area r in their lckers, which is nt accessible t children. Outings and Trips If children are ging n utings, staff accmpanying the children will be fully infrmed abut the child s needs and/r medicatin. Medicatin fr a child is taken in a sealed plastic bag clearly labelled with the child s name and the name f the medicatin. Inside the flder is a cpy f the Medicatin Cnsent Frm t recrd when the medicatin has been administered, with the details as given abve. Nn-Prescribed Medicatin Staff will nly give nn-prescriptin medicatin with prir written permissin frm the parent/carer and where there is an accepted health risk t d s. Children at the setting will nt be given nn-prescriptin mediatin which cntains aspirin. Prir t administering nn-prescriptin medicatin t a child, the parent/carer will be phned t gain their cnsent and t check that the child has nt had any medicatin befre cming t the setting. Members f staff will nly administer medicine in the presence anther member f staff, the expiry date f the mediatin will be checked befre it is administered. A recrd is made f what medicatin has been administered and when n the cnsent frm and signed by bth members f staff. The parent/carer will be asked t sign this when they cllect their child. Self-held Medicatin Children are nt permitted t be respnsible fr their wn medicatin and are nt permitted t carry their wn medicatin n their persn Prir Parental Cnsent fr Emergency Treatment See Illness & Injury Plicy Staff Medicatin Practitiners wh are taking medicatin may nly wrk directly with children if the medical advice cnfirms that the medicatin is unlikely t impair that staff member s ability t lk after children prperly Staff medicatin n the premises must be stred securely, and ut f reach f children at all times.
