AU TECH NOTE ASSUMPTION UNIVERSITY A Quarterly Publication of Assumption University ISSN: 1513-0878 Vol. 17 No. 2 October 2013 Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design Career Week 2013 Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design participated in Career Week 2013 organized by the Career Development Center (CDC) <www.jobcdc.au.edu>, Office of Student Affairs, Assumption University of Thailand (AU), during Monday-Thursday, 19-22 August 2013. The career week provides career opportunities for AU students and alumni. It is a popular on-campus recruitment event which makes suitable arrangements for the graduating students to meet with the recruitment officers of over one hundred leading companies and personally apply for job offerings. The event is usually held every semester in AU Plaza, Cathedral of Learning (CL) Building, Suvarnabhumi Campus, 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m., during the week after mid-term examinations. The two main objectives of the career week are to prepare the graduating students for the real world and to be the meeting point where the companies introduce and familiarize the students with their establishments and further recruit potential graduates. On Monday, 19 August 2013, the students of a winning team for packaging design of Doi Pha Som products, Department of Product Design, Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design, received certificates from Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, Rector Magnificus of Assumption University, during a certificate presentation arranged by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nitichan Pleumarom, Dean of Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design. The students have been working closely with a marketing professional, Ms. Jiranooch Noochniyom, the instructor delivering the course PD 3303 Product Design and Marketing Principles. The winning packaging design can be further developed to properly suit the manufacturing process and the product requirements. The displayed packaging design is created in support of a social service project which aims at sustaining the forests by launching products from a local community and creating occupations for community members. School of Biotechnology Open House AU Biotech Open House was held on Thursday and Friday, 22-23 August 2013, at Hua Mak Campus. Special Project Presentations Year 2013 The School of Biotechnology organized the 3 rd round of the special project presentations during Tuesday-Saturday, 22-26 October 2013. School of Engineering Aeronautic Engineering Assumption University is ready to open an aviation training center of a world-class standard at Suvarnabhumi Campus. A new full flight simulator (FFS) is now available at the School of Engineering, Suvarnabhumi Campus: an Airbus A320 JAR FSTD A Level D Full Flight Simulator. Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) On Thursday, 19 September 2013, Assumption University of Thailand (AU) and Pan Am International Flight Academy (Pan Am) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a world class flight simulator training center at Suvarnabhumi Campus of Assumption University. In addition to the existing Airbus A320 simulator, Pan Am intends to move three additional full flight simulators to the campus. These simulators will be available for training by the second quarter of 2014. School of Nursing Science Wrap-up Session for Internship Students The School of Nursing Science hosted an internship program for two overseas students during 7 July - 30 August 2013, which gave them a unique opportunity to study nursing courses in Assumption University as a part of their undergraduate study. The two Austrian students from the University of Applied Sciences FH Wien Campus, Vienna, Austria, made their final presentations during a wrap-up session at the end of their internship on Thursday, 29 August 2013, in room A-52, Hua Mak Campus. After the session, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert, Dean of the School of Nursing Science, presented certificates of achievement and recognition to both students. The students expressed their sincere appreciation to everyone at the school for showing generous assistance and full support during their stay. The School of Nursing Science intends to continue strengthening its bonds with other universities elsewhere in the world through student internship programs in the future. The internship students make their final presentations during the wrap-up session at the end of their internship program. Nursing Science Lecturer Presents Her Research Work at the 21 st IUHPE 2013 The 21 st International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference on Health Promotion was organized by IUHPE and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (Thai- Health) in Pattaya, Thailand, during 25-29 August 2013. In order to exchange experiences in implementing health care and to highlight health promotion activities, Ms. Kanyaphat Setchoduk, lecturer of the School of Nursing Science, presented a poster entitled The new trend of smoking in Thailand: The myth of Baraku (Water-pipe smoking) among Thai youth. Capping and Pinning Ceremony Class of 2015 A formal nursing capping and pinning ceremony has held on Monday, 9 September 2013. This ceremony is widely recognized in Assumption University as a regular event which usually is scheduled after the students complete all basic foundation and experience nursing courses. Rev. Bro. Dr. Prathip Martin Komolmas, President Emeritus of Assumption University, Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran, Rector Magnificus, Rev. Bro. Dr. Amnuay Yoonprayong, Vice President for Moral Development Education, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert, Dean of the School of Nursing Science, faculty members, administrators, 42 sophomore students and their families gathered together in the Auditorium, Hua Mak Campus. During the ceremony, Rev. Bro. Dr. Bancha Saenghiran emphasized that nursing is a noble profession and the student nurses must pledge to serve the community with greater devotion and love for the patients. Asst. Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert crowned the students with caps and presented them with pins, a symbol of their formal acceptance which is recognized as a part of the nursing profession by everyone: patients, their families, nursing staff and physicians. Moreover, being capped and pinned was of great significance to the class of 2015 nursing students. In addition, this is a unique ceremony for both students and faculty members that welcomes the sophomore students into the world of professional nursing through a meaningful tradition which will continue in Assumption University for years to come. The School of Nursing Science holds the nursing capping and pinning ceremony class of 2015 in the Auditorium, Hua Mak Campus. Visitors from Shinawatra University A delegation representing the School of Nursing, Shinawatra University, came to visit the School of Nursing Science, Assumption University, on Wednesday, 25 September 2013. After a meeting in room A-71, Hua Mak Campus, which was attended by faculty members from the two institutions, the guests were invited to the nursing laboratory on the 5 th floor of M-building. During their visit, the guests obtained information from Asst. Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert, Dean of the School of Nursing Science, on various issues related to the nursing education. The School of Nursing Science strives to promote further cooperation and academic exchanges between the two universities. Asst. National Nurses Day 2013 The National Nurses Day in Thailand is celebrated annually on 21 October 2013. All Thai nurses, including the Dean, instructors and students from the School of Nursing Science celebrated the National Nurses Day at the Ministry of Public Health by expressing their deep thankfulness, appreciation and gratitude to Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, Princess Mother of Thailand, for her dedication and numerous achievements initiated for the benefit of the people throughout her long life. National Nurses Day Exhibition The National Nurses Day Exhibition took place in Assumption University at the first floor of A-Building, Hua Mak Campus, during 18-25 October 2013. The exhibition attracted great interest with poster boards that displayed the contributions of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, Princess Mother of Thailand, throughout her life to health, charitable projects, including public health, and the well-being of the people. This event specifically emphasized the importance of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra s dedication and compassion in caring for the sick and suffering. The importance and advancement of the nursing profession also appeared on the boards. On this special occasion, a health promotion campaign was also organized to provide accurate and valuable information that highlights the importance of early detection of breast cancer. AU staff and students participated in free breast examinations as this type of cancer is most common among women in Thailand. This purposeful exhibition provided very useful information for the benefit of all professionals with common interest in breast cancer awareness. QA Workshop 2013 Most faculty members attended the 2013 Quality Assurance (QA) Workshop during Thursday-Friday, 24-25 October 2013. It was organized at John XXIII Conference Center, Suvarnabhumi Campus. One of the objectives of this workshop was to support academic and administrative units in the preparation of internal and external quality assessment. Asst Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert, Dean of the School of Nursing Science, delivered a keynote presentation on Knowledge Sharing and Learning Sessions as an honorable guest speaker in this workshop. The presentations were followed by discussions and the attendees were encouraged to further explore many issues related to QA during the afternoon session. By gaining more knowledge regarding quality assurance after the completion of the two-day workshop, the faculty members were inspired to design effectively and efficiently new teaching strategies of high quality in their daily academic works at Assumption University. The Princess Srinagarindra Award 2013 On Wednesday, 23 October 2013, Ms. Chieko Nohno, Japanese nurse, awardee of the Princess Srinagarindra Award for 2013, delivered a speech at the Office of the Civil Service Commission. On this occasion, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nanthaphan Chinlumprasert, Dean of the School of Nursing Science, was a master of ceremony. Faculty members and sophomore nursing students also attended the event with feelings of appreciation in order to honor the outstanding experiences and professionalism of the awardee. Asst. School of Science and Technology Senior Project Exhibition 1/2013 The Senior Project Exhibition 1/2013 was held on Friday, 18 October 2013, in Salle d Expo, Hua Mak Campus. The undergraduate students of the School of Science and Technology presented the final results of their Senior Projects in the form of colorful posters and PowerPoint presentations. Most exciting were the tests of the developed software and hardware applications which showed the ability of the students to deal with the complexity of the modern technology. The student teams from different departments had a wonderful experience in sharing their work and having discussions not only with the project advisers and committee members, but also with colleagues, friends, relatives and visitors. The students enjoy the inspirational atmosphere of Senior Project Exhibition 1/2013.
