Background 2008 Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education Uniform model for regulation of APRNS Advanced Practice Nursing Consensus Work Group & the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Endorsed by 48 professional nursing organizations

Essential Elements Licensure Accreditation Certification Education

APRN Licensure Requirements Current Minnesota RN license Unencumbered RN license with no active action in any state or jurisdiction Completion a graduate level APRN program in one of 4 roles and of 6 populations Current certification from a national nursing certification organization acceptable to the board Licensees will hold both RN and APRN license

Grandfather Provision License will be issued to an applicant who does not meet educational requirements and who was recognized by the board to practice as an APRN in Minnesota on July 1, 2014 OR Applicant may be eligible if currently appropriately certified and in compliance with the educational requirements in effect in Minnesota at the time of graduation

Post Graduate Practice Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Nurse Practitioner only 2080 hours of practice within the context of a collaborative agreement, within a hospital or integrated clinical setting where APRNs and physicians practice together Collaborative agreement and verification of completion may be with a licensed Minnesota APRN or physician

CRNA Practice of Pain Management Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist may perform non-surgical pain management of acute and chronic pain symptoms Upon referral and in collaboration with a licensed Minnesota physician. The CRNA must perform the therapies at the same licensed health care facility as the physician. For the purposes of performing non-surgical therapies for chronic pain symptoms with a written prescribing agreement with a licensed Minnesota physician.
