Meeting Minutes Agenda Item Welcome Action Discussion Information Dr. Jordan welcomed the advisory committee members and provided updates about the campus particularly the new Energy Technology Center. He commended the construction management program in achieving the national accreditation by ACCE. He went on to solicit thoughts from the committee on how industry people can help the college and students to succeed. He also asked the committee to closely look at the current curriculum in order to integrate possibilities to expand and take advantage of the resources provided by the Energy Technology Center particularly on renewal and sustainable construction. Dr. Jordan encouraged Advisory Committee members to give input about the program and to provide opportunities for internships apprenticeships, and well-paying jobs for TCC students. Responsibility Dr. Peter Jordan Dr. Jordan introduced other administrator: VP for Community and Industry Education, Gladys Emerson and Dr. Steven Wilson, VPAA. Dr. Jordan praised Dr. Bagcal s hard work and dedication to the program Dr. Bagcal thanked the committee and administrators for sacrificing their time in attending the meeting. He then passed on to to preside the meeting as committee chair. / Page 2 of 12

Introductions: All committee members, Tarrant County College faculty, and guests introduced themselves to the group., TCC Staff and guests Call to Order: Mr. Benda called the meeting to order Past Minutes Minutes were reviewed and approved. Meeting Discussions: Advisory Committee Function Recognition of Dr. Sheryl Harris Mr. Benda went over the function of the advisory committee members. He explained how each of those functions can be achieve and create a strong industry advisory committee that can better serve and will strengthen the construction program. He stressed out that through their inputs, recommendation and practical experience will benefit the program. Outlined the committee functions: - Evaluate goals - Work place needs - Suggest program revisions - Evaluate adequacy of facilities - Identify local business industry leaders - Assist in promoting TCC program Mr. Roegner suggested having some sort of proclamation to recognize Sheryl Harris for her vision and advocating the accreditation of the program when Mr. Carl Roegner Page 3 of 12

Status of the Construction Program/ Program Integration State of the Program she was still the dean over the program at Southeast campus. Proclamation accepted by members. Cheryl Harris will be recognized at the Fall 2015 Committee meeting. Mr. Benda also applauded the construction program for achieving the ACCE accreditation. He commended the faculty members for their leadership and commitment in providing a high quality education, facilities and equipment. Program Updates: Mr. Thomas Ford informed the committee about the future expansion of the program such as offering of new programs that will be tied up to the existing CM program. He also announced the realignment of various departments in the division. He mentioned that the CM program will be aligned to the Building System Department that includes HVAC, Architecture and Construction. He announced that the CM program will moved to the new Energy Technology Center building. TCC Construction Program was awarded Accreditation in February 2015. TCC is the 2 nd two year college in Texas and 12 th in the nation to receive accreditation. This distinction opens the door to transfer/articulation agreements with 4 year colleges and universities. The 2015 International Builder s Competition is a residential Mr. Thomas Ford Page 4 of 12

construction management competition in which TCC has participated each year since 2011. This year TCC won 3 rd place for the NAHB Outstanding Student Chapter and 1 st place in the 2 year college category in the Residential Construction Management Competition out of 16 teams. The Association of Construction Management Students organization participates in approximately 200 volunteer hours a year of community service. Current activities include Habitat for Humanity, Cow-Town Brush Up, Adopt-A-Highway, and TCC projects. The program has seen steady enrollment over the past year. Enrollment is expected to increase in the coming semesters. Fall 2015 will see more courses offered. There will be 16 sections offered. Graduates are also increasing as compared to previous years. Students of the program are encouraged to participate in giving back to the community by volunteering their time with the many opportunities available such as Habitat For Humanity, Adopt- A-Highway, TCC projects like the installation of a solar charger on the TCC-South Student Building, and the High School Showcase. Non Credit Education/ Community and Industry Education Proposed New Certificate Mr. Roegner asked about what is the H.S. and Community Showcase all about and how many were served. Ms. Yanes explained that the Showcase is a district wide event that invites community and area high school in order to spread awareness about the various Career and Technical Education available at TCC. She said that about 400 attended. Student employment rate is between 90%-95%. Most often the students are offered full time employment from the companies where they completed their internships. Some of TCC s industry partners are; DR Horton, Westwood, Cardinal, Winsor, CMJ Engineering, Southern Star, and Turner to name a few. In 2014, TCC held a career fair in which DR Horton and Westwood Contractors participated. Ms. Emerson went over the plan of partnering with the Construction Technology program and with Texas Workforce Commission for retraining and achieving shorter training times to get workers out into the workforce. They are offering noncredit education as another pathway for student education. They are working on offering more bilingual instructors. She asked the committee to spread the words about the offering that may benefit their workers. Ms. Jean Yanes Ms. Gladys Emerson Page 6 of 12

Dr. Bagcal shared with members the proposed certificate of study for Construction Business Entrepreneur and solicited feedback and suggestions. The new certificate is a Level II and requires 43 credit hours to complete. He mentioned that the students completing this level II certificate will also be eligible to receive Business I certificate with an addition of 2 more classes. Dr. Bagcal asked for recommendations from the members. He directed members to refer to page 19 of the Advisory Committee meeting booklet. Advisory committee members raised question whether the program can offer several other certificates that could address areas such as real estate, construction finance, project control and civil/infrastructure project. Dr. Bagcal explained that the Texas Higher Education Board limits the number of certificates and AAS degree in one program. They limit 2 Level 1 certificate, 1 Level 2 certificate, 1 marketable skills certificate and 1 advance certificate. He mentioned that the proposed certificate in business entrepreneur will replaced the interior design certificate due to deleting of interior courses in the state level. What is an ideal Mr. Benda said that involvement of students with NAHB/ TEXO/ CMAA is a great way and possibly AGC/NAIC as well. Page 7 of 12

partnership that would strengthen our construction management technology program in terms of the following: A. Placement of graduates to construction companies B. Awareness of the Construction program at TCC C. Contribution in monetary and nonmonetary to the program D. Scholarship E. Internship F. Involvement with NAHB/TEXO/CMAA Mr. Ben Torres/ Mr. Zamora said that ACM certification exam and CMAA affiliation can be a good credential and motivation for the students. Mr. Zamora mentioned that CMAA is currently not accepting any more student chapter until their ABET relationship is established. The UTA and UNT chapters are still going through the process. Mr. Benda asked the committee if there is anyone who is currently active members of TEXO in which could be a good network for internship and employment. Dr. Bagcal said that in previous years, VP of TEXO was active member of the committee but loss connection for some reason but he said that he will reach out to them and invite them to be part of the committee. Mr. Avery stressed the importance of staying active with the NAHB and attending the International Builder s Show to exposed students to the industry. Dr. Burleson raised concern about students being spread thinly if they are going to apply for national chapters in various organizations. She suggested having a single on campus organization with multiple sponsors since it may cost too much for the students if they need to be affiliated in all the national chapters. The committee asked if the advisory committee members would mind getting direct contact from students by allowing students access to their contact information. Dr. Bagcal said that if it has to do with internships and employments, it would be best to communicate with him in order to recommend students. Bob Benda/ Mr. Benda as the committee on how they can we better connect students with jobs. Mr. Torres suggested having students involved in social networking such as LinkedIn. Mr. Benda asked the committee if there are any other ideas to elevate awareness of the program. Dr. Wilson suggested inviting the advisory committee members to the Grand Opening of the new facility to inform the public and raised awareness what the facility can be great resources for the industry. Mr. Warren said to visit High Schools in outlying areas on career days to let them know about a career path in Construction or to invite students to campus and provide a seminar type for them to learn about the construction program. Are there any new thoughts about equipment or computer software or recent technological developments in the construction industry that we need to address? What industry trends are occurring that we need to be aware of? Mr. Benda mentioned about various avenues available for monetary contribution by setting up scholarships, endowment and financial support for student who are going for competition Dr. Burleson asked if there is any scholarship model the committee members can follow. Mr. Benda said that he is active member of the TCC Foundation Board and he can provide them the documents and procedures required to set up scholarship or endowment. Mr. Benda asked the committee members on what is the best way to be aware of potential employment for students The committee said to have one on one contact with companies and career fairs. Dr. Burleson asked if there is a planned growth for the program. Dr. Bagcal mentioned that if enrollment rises to a stable 175-200 student, additional hiring of faculty will be granted. Mr. Zamora said that according to the FMG Construction Survey of 2015, TMIS system will be big in the next couple of years. He added that moving to integrate all aspects into one system. The moving away of expensive Primavera P6 software to more towards MS Project due to cost. Some of the big players in the software game are ebuilder, Textura, Primavera, and Procore. What recent technological developments in the profession do you feel that you perceive needs our attention? How might they be integrated into our program? Adjournment: Mr. Griffith stressed about the importance of Primavera P6 scheduling that is required for all publicly funded multi million project and that students should learn the software Dr. Bagcal said that students in the program are learning P6 in their computer-aided scheduling class however; he said that they are having issues renewing the program since it is not compliance to disability requirements. Mr. Ford said that he will talk to the district about it. Mr. Clements mentioned about the integration of ERP systems with TMIS. Mr. Benda mentioned about BIM as one that common software being used for document integration in big commercial construction companies. Dr. Burleson said that since these softwares can be very complicated, they need to also be able to see the sophistication and how they are used in the field. Committee members agreed that the fundamental of scheduling principles are the same no matter what software is used. They stressed out that the students learn the basic fundamentals of scheduling.
