We have shared wonderful news, as well as unfortunate sorrow. We know we have many blessings for which we should be thankful and possibilities that await us as we approach the months ahead. 2018 brings with it new opportunities to help fellow neighbors in our community and to support the larger community that surrounds us. Keep an eye on this newsletter as we bring you notice of familiar events and important news. Please let us know if you have an idea for something new and exciting that we can plan together. As always, give us a call or stop by during office hours to discuss activities that might benefit all residents of our community. We wish you joy and peace and a happy New Year!

Beginning makes the conditions perfect. Alan Cohen Health Benefits of Garlic By Emily Beard, Nutrition Intern This month, I am writing about the health benefits of eating garlic. Fresh garlic is available in grocery stores all year round. Look for bulbs that are plump with unbroken skin and are not soft, shriveled or beginning to sprout. Any sign of rotting can greatly affect garlic s flavor and texture. *Tip: Gently squeeze the bulb between your fingers, and if it feels firm, not damp, then you are choosing good quality garlic! When it comes to cooking garlic, avoid using high heat, and remember that the longer it is cooked, the more its health benefits are lost! Therefore, it is best to add it to the pan when the food is almost done, or add it raw at the very end. Health benefits from eating garlic can include: Improvements in heart health Reduced arthritis pain Lower blood pressure Reduced inflammation Improvements in memory and brain function Better blood sugar control Interesting fact: Garlic could help to reverse hair loss! According to research in European countries, applying garlic gel on the scalp twice a day for three months showed promise in treating a condition called alopecia (an autoimmune skin disease that results in hair loss all over the body). Keep in mind: If you enjoy eating raw garlic but hate the garlic breath that results, chew on some fresh parsley or mint leaves to counteract the aftertaste. It really, truly works! Presley plays Chad Gates, an ex-gi who comes home to Hawaii, but instead of joining the family s fruitful pineapple business, he takes a job as a tour guide. Light, funny and filled with scenes of the islands beauty and culture plus a hit soundtrack of 14 songs, including Can t Help Falling in Love the film makes for a perfect escape from the winter blahs.
