Nursing Leadership and Advanced Roles Course Description The purpose of this course is professional role development related to leadership in advance nursing practice. Major emphasis of the course will focus on effective communication as a member of an interprofessional team; strategies to promote change in the healthcare system; and leadership skills necessary to deliver high quality and culturally competent healthcare to positively affect patient outcomes. Course Objectives At the end of the course, the student will be able to: Analyze own strengths, limitations, and values as a member of a team and impact of own advanced practice role Describe scopes of practice and roles of all healthcare team members and strategies for identifying and managing overlaps in roles Articulate initiatives to sustain effective partnerships with members of nursing and inter-professional teams Explore impact of own communication style on others and preferences among patients and families, advanced practice nurses, and other members of the health team Examine the impact of authority gradients and their influence on team functioning on safety and quality of care Identify system barriers and facilitators of effective team functioning Examine strategies to promote change for improving systems and support team functioning Describe nurse leader characteristics necessary to manage a culturally diverse workforce and the impact of cultural diversity on team functioning Describe the factors that create a just culture and the role of transformational nurse leaders in creating a culture of safety Examine nurse leadership skills necessary to deliver high-quality care and strategies for improving health outcomes including academic/clinical partnerships Explore nursing s image in the media and examine strategies to present a positive image 10/12/2015 NUR 514: Nursing Leadership and Advanced Roles i

Final Grade The course grade will be determined by summing the number of points the student receives. Letter grades will be assigned according to the following point accumulations. Discussion Board Participation (8 @ 20 points = 160 Points) A requirement for the class is to post a scholarly, substantive response utilizing APA (6th ed.) citations to each week s Discussion Board by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. ET and at least four insightful responses to your classmates or instructor by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. ET for a minimum total of five postings each week. The insightful response must be substantive rather than just an I agree response. Students online participation and completion of assigned web-based activities will be tracked by the instructor throughout the duration of the course. Course participation points will be deducted for lack of online participation. Only postings before 11:59 p.m. ET at the end of the week will earn points. Note: There are no make-up provisions for a missed discussion. Prepare for the online classroom by completing all assigned readings and/or activities. Participate in discussions including building on what others contribute. Use assigned readings and other appropriate, relevant literature, together with personal leadership and clinical experience in nursing as a basis for discussion. Discussion Board Assignments are asynchronous learning activities which allow students to research and present pertinent information to the entire class. Each student is expected to post relevant information obtained from peer reviewed journals, Internet sources that are organizations, educational, or governmental (.org/.edu/.gov). Commercial Internet sources are not appropriate unless from reputable news organization, i.e., New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, Time Magazine, etc. Failure to participate or to participate in a less than meaningful fashion will result in no points awarded. Assignment Guidelines All written assignments must be typed (double-spaced), have an appropriate title sheet, and conform to APA format. References should not be older than five years, except in cases where the reference is considered a classic in the particular field. For due dates on all assignments, please refer to the schedule of classes and assignments. Nursing Leadership and Influence Paper (150 Points) This is an individually written formal paper about nursing leadership and influence. This paper is expected to be five to seven pages in length, excluding title page and reference list. APA formatting is required. Refer to Sullivan s Becoming Influential as well as Chapter 27 of DeNisco. Choose a concept presented in Sullivan (Power, Image, Communication, Politics, Networking, Setting Goals and Negotiation). Describe the concept and why you view it as important to nursing influence. Review the literature on your chosen concept and note your findings. Describe how you, as an Advanced Practice nurse, will develop and utilize this concept in your professional practice to influence health care and advocate for patients. Include in your discussion your goals for the immediate future once you have completed your MSN degree. Select a case scenario that occurred in your nursing practice. The scenario may involve a direct clinical or an indirect systems (administrative) situation. Explain the case, including what resolution did or did not occur. Perform a literature review of the subject and document your findings. Address the issue from a cultural, quality and safety, and advanced nursing practice role perspective. Include information on the legal and ethical implications of the issue. viii

Students will post their presentation and direct a discussion about the issue and their findings. Each student is expected to pose questions regarding the issue to the class. Additionally they are expected to address all questions or comments that are directed to their poster. Please refer to http://www.makesigns.com/ to download a free template for your poster. Chose a nursing issue that impacts your practice. The nursing issue may involve a structure, process or outcome. Examples might include an increased number of patient falls, long wait times in the Emergency Department, high staff turnover, poor medication compliance in an outpatient setting. Your team is in charge of establishing a committee to address this issue. Establish membership of your committee, including which disciplines should be represented and what individual responsibilities are. Provide goals and objectives for your committee. Provide a timeline for expected resolution of the issue and dissolution of committee. Provide guidelines for communication among committee members, including resolution of conflict. Describe how you will implement your solution to the issue addressed and measure the effectiveness of your model. Students are expected to interview nursing and other healthcare leaders at their facility to help develop their committee. They are also expected to attend interdisciplinary meetings to gain insight on the workings of teams and apply what they learned to their ideal team. Refer to chapter 30 of De Nisco Student groups will submit one 8 10 page paper for their group. Additionally students will develop a 15 20 slide PowerPoint presentation about their Team and present to classmates.
