Message for Students Hidden in Center s Researcher Spotlights Every day researchers from across the U.S. impact what the world knows about its food. The Egg Industry Center, located at Iowa State University, works to introduce the public to the professionals who work on the science that impacts their egg supply. We started our researcher spotlight effort with a list of well-known researchers who are impacting the industry with their work, says Lesa Vold, EIC Communications Specialist. However, this most recent interview was the second notable professor we have reached who has retired in the last year, and just last week I learned of another upcoming retirement. Vold thinks there is an important message here for students. These researchers provide so much important expertise for our industry and they each fill an important niche role in positioning the industry for success, she said. It is important for students to look at the large variety of career opportunities that exist because the opportunities may be broader than you think. Vold points out that while a new graduate isn t going to immediately fulfill the open position of a seasoned researcher, someone will move up, and that creates an opportunity for someone new. Her advice for students is to talk to someone within the area of interest they want to pursue. This contact can likely help a student find out if their path will yield the career they are hoping for, and it may help them decide where to invest their efforts for internships or work opportunities while they are in school, she says. Who 5
knows, maybe one of the next most notable egg specialists is getting started right here, right now, at ISU! Other editions of the EIC researcher spotlight can be found here. 6
