INTERNATIONAL HOUSE GATEWAY FELLOWSHIPS, UC Berkeley http://ihouse.berkeley.edu/applicants/aid.php The following Gateway Fellowships are reserved for graduate students only. Eligible candidates who are accepted into UC Berkeley are nominated by academic departments. Graduate students who apply to live at International House, may also qualify and self-nominate with support of their department. Gateway Fellowships include a three-way agreement between the donor (I-House), the Graduate Division and the corresponding Academic Department of the University of California at Berkeley. A Gateway Fellowship provides to the recipient, single-occupancy room and board and cross cultural activities at International House UC Berkeley for one academic year, fees and tuition paid by the corresponding Academic Department, and a $5,000 stipend paid by the Graduate Division. In most cases, prospective recipients must have demonstrated financial need We anticipate that funds will be available for all of these Gateway Fellowships listed below for the 2017-18 academic year. Nominations will be accepted beginning the third week of January with priority preference deadline of submission to I-House by March 1, 2017. Chevron-Xenel Gateway Ph.D. Fellowship This fellowship s preference is for an eligible first year doctoral student meeting the eligibility, and awarded to one student annually. Eligibility Guidelines: The highest priority is given to students who are citizens or otherwise have strong affiliation to a specified country and meet the educational criteria. First preference will be given to citizens of Saudi Arabia or otherwise have strong affiliation with Saudi Arabia and second preference to citizens of or otherwise have strong affiliation to other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. Countries (alphabetical order): Angola, Australia, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Venezuela. Educational Areas/Disciplines: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, Geology, Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering. If both criteria cannot be met, then the third preference will be given to applicants who are citizens of or otherwise have strong affiliation with Angola, Australia, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Thailand and Venezuela. candidate cannot be found who meets both or at least one of the three criteria, then the University may select the next best available candidate not meeting any of the above criteria. The Chevron-Xenel Ph.D. Fellowship was established in 2006 by Chevron Corporation and Xenel International USA, with the goal of bettering the relationship between East and West and with the aspiration of furthering awareness of the principles of Islam and the Moslem peoples. 2. Chevron-Xenel Gateway Fellowship in Public Health (MPH) This fellowship is for an eligible, first year Masters degree student in Public Health at UC Berkeley, awarded to one student annually. Eligibility Guidelines: In reviewing admitted students nominated for the Chevron-Xenel Gateway Fellowship in Public Health, the highest priority will be given to students who meet the following country criteria: first preference will be given to students who are citizens of Saudi Arabia or otherwise have strong affiliation with Saudi Arabia, second preference to students who are citizens of or otherwise have strong affiliation to Kuwait, Qatar, or alternatively other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, third preference to other countries included in the following list. Countries (alphabetical order): Angola, Australia, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Libya, Mexico, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Venezuela, other GCC countries. If a candidate cannot be found who meets the country criteria, then the committee may select the next best available candidate not meeting the country criteria, from outside the United States. Eltoukhy East-West Gateway Fellowship The Eltoukhy East-West Gateway Fellowship is for eligible first year or continuing doctoral students at UC Berkeley and awarded to one student annually. Eligibility Guidelines: Students are eligible for consideration if they have been accepted as an entering first year doctoral student at the University of California, Berkeley and have demonstrated financial need. If there is no eligible first year applicant, the fellowship will be awarded to an eligible continuing doctoral student. In reviewing admitted UC Berkeley students nominated for the Eltoukhy East-West Gateway Fellowship, I-House will give the highest priority to students who are citizens of Egypt or otherwise have a strong affiliation with Egypt. Second preference will be given to students who are citizens of or otherwise have strong affiliation with Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Algeria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Somalia, Morocco, Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank) and Mauritania. The third preference will be given to students who are citizens of or otherwise have strong affiliation with Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan or Malaysia. The Eltoukhy East-West Gateway Fellowship was established in 2006 by the Eltoukhy Family Foundation, with the goal of and improving the relationship between East and West, and with the aspiration of furthering increased awareness of the principles and beliefs of Islam and the Moslem peoples. EWJ Gateway Fellowship Eligibility Guidelines: Established in 2004, this fellowship supports an incoming or continuing international doctoral student pursuing studies in any academic field of study for up to two consecutive years. Nominee must be an international student admitted to a doctoral program with demonstrate financial need. 5. Carl and Betty Helmholz Scholarship Endowment Eligibility Guidelines: In reviewing admitted UC Berkeley students nominated for the Carl and Betty Helmholz Scholarship Endowment, highest priority is given to eligible, first year or continuing doctoral students from the U.S. or outside the U.S. from all fields, with special consideration to be given to applicants in Physics. This fellowship honors Carl Helmolz who served as Chair of the UC Berkeley Physics Department and Betty Helmholz. 6. Joe Lurie Returning Peace Corps Gateway Fellowship Eligibility Guidelines: In reviewing admitted UC Berkeley students nominated for the Joe Lurie Retuning Peace Corps Scholarship, the highest priority is given to an eligible, first-year, entering Ph.D. student who is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. Special Terms and Conditions: Whenever there is no suitable RPCV candidate identified for a Gateway fellowship, annual income from the fund may be awarded, based on need, to any RPCV who applies for financial aid to live at I-House, whether as a junior, senior, graduate student or visiting scholar in any Cal academic or professional discipline. When there is no RPCV identified in any given year, up to one-half of the annual income may be used to support an U.S. student or permanent resident, and one-half of the annual income may be used to support an overseas student, though preference should be given to overseas students from Africa. In all cases, applicants must demonstrate financial need. This fellowship is named in honor of Joe Lurie, a former Peace Corps Volunteer who served with distinction as I-House s third Executive Director from 1988-2007. 7. Daniel Mouen-Makoua Gateway Fellowship Eligibility Guidelines: In reviewing eligible students nominated by their department for consideration, highest priority will be given to one incoming or continuing international Ph.D. student from Sub Saharan Africa. If there is no such qualified recipient, the donor prefers the award be deferred until a student fitting this criterion is identified. This fellowship award may not be given annually if the fund does not produce enough earnings to support room and board fees for the academic year. Established in 2009, Mr. Mouen-Makou states the purpose for the fellowship: " As Cameroonian, there is nothing closer to my heart than seeing a strong Sub-Sahara African region. Setting up the Mouen-Makoua Gateway Fellowship stems from my belief that sustainable growth and wealth will be created in Africa by Leaders which show: - a vision for their people - competence allied with a deep understanding of the world and its challenges - strong moral and ethics - a strong local and international support network I believe the fellowship will offer an invaluable opportunity for a young African student to acquire knowledge in the best possible conditions, develop a vision, meet fellow students and create long lasting bonds. " 8. Open Gateway Eligibility Guidelines: The Open Gateway was established by multiple donors to support a term endowment fund for US or international first-year incoming Ph.D. student with demonstrated financial need. This fellowship provides a full academic year of paid room and board fees at I-House, a $5,000 stipend paid by the Graduate Division, and tuition and fees paid by the corresponding academic department. 9. Allan and Kathleen Rosevear Gateway Fellowship Eligibility Guidelines: In reviewing eligible students nominated by their department for consideration, priority consideration will be given to students pursuing studies in Physics or Astrophysics. If no such student is identified in a given year, then priority preference passes to include students pursuing studies in the sciences. If no student meets the above criteria, the award may be given to any entering or continuing doctoral student with demonstrated financial need, of US and/or international origin. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Rosevear graduated with a Bachelor s Degree in Physics from Earlham College in 1960 and enrolled at UC Berkeley the same year, earning his Master s degree in Physics in 1962 under the Chairmanship of Carl Helmholz. Mr. Rosevear lived at I-House for two years, forming friendships with students from around the world. This Gateway fellowship was established in 2007 by International House alumnus Allan Rosevear and his wife Kathy. Mr. Rosevear was employed at North American Aviation Autonetics Division, Rockwell International, and Boeing Company in Anaheim, CA, retiring in 1998. His work included development and production of inertial instruments and navigation systems, computer systems design, and software engineering. Mr. Rosevear s hobbies include gardening, hiking, travel, and model railroading. 10. Adrian Hao Yin Ü Gateway Fellowship Eligibility Guidelines: This fund will support incoming doctoral students, giving the highest priority to students who are graduates of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. If there is no such qualified recipient in a given year, the preference will be given to graduates from universities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or China. If no such student is available for the fellowship, the award may be offered to any eligible student. One award will be made annually. This fellowship was established in 2005 by International House alumnus Kwei Sang Ü and his Canadian wife, Michele. Kwei Ü s family has had a long and meaningful relationship with International House. His aunt, Djoh-I LI, was one of its earliest residents. In 1947, his father, Man Foo Peter Ü, lived at International House. Professor Choh Ming LI, Kwei s uncle, took a sabbatical from the University of California in 1963 to found The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and upon his retirement, returned to Berkeley and served on the International House Board of Directors. With this Gateway Fellowship, named in memory of their son who died in his infancy, Kwei and Michele wish to support the mission of International House by supporting incoming doctoral students pursuing studies in any academic field of study who are citizens from outside the U.S. for up to two consecutive years. 11. Norway House Foundation Term Gateway Fellowship at International House Eligibility Guidelines: Applicants must be Norwegian citizens, at least 18 years of age, who are accepted as first-year doctoral students in any field of study to the University of California at Berkeley. Preference is given to Ph.D. students who are Norwegian nationals and are descendants of Norwegian World War II seamen and merchant marines. Established in 2006, this fellowship is made possible by the Norway House Foundation in San Francisco, California. The applicants must be a graduate students who is a Norwegian national with demonstrated financial need. The mission of the Norway House Foundation is to honor the Norwegian seafarers who risked their lives for the Allied cause in World War II for whose benefit this corporation was originally established. The Norway House Foundation carries out its mission by making grants to qualified non-profit organizations that promote, encourage, and support Norwegian-American educational, professional and cultural exchange, or provide social services to Norwegian-Americans and Norwegian nationals living in the United States. 12. The Joan and Egon von Kaschnitz Gateway Fellowship at International House, UC Berkeley This fellowship is for an incoming international PhD. student with financial need, in any academic discipline. Highest preference will be given to students who are citizens of or have strong affiliation with Austria. Secondary preference will be given to a student who is a resident of a member country of the European Union. If no candidate satisfies this condition, then the fellowship may be awarded to any graduate student admitted to a doctoral program with demonstrated financial need. The fellowship may be renewed for a second year if there are enough funds to support this. The Joan and Egon von Kaschnitz Gateway Fellowship was established in 2011. Egon von Kaschnitz, a former member of the International House Board of Directors passed away in November 2015. He was formerly CEO of Zierer Visa Service, Inc. He received his A.B. and M.A. in economics from UC Berkeley. After his army tour of duty in Germany, he returned to Berkeley, where he received his MBA from The Haas School of Business. He was a member of the Haas School Advisory Board and a co-chair of the Haas Center for Financial Reporting and Management. An alumnus of International House, Berkeley. He has served on the boards of a bank, manufacturing companies and various non-profit organizations. Mr. von Kaschnitz served on the International House Board from 2000 to 2009 and 2011 to 2014. During his tenure, he served on the Audit Committee and Finance Committee, including chairing the later. 13. Established in 1989, this scholarship was a model for the current Gateway Fellowship program. Recipients are selected annually by the Dean of UC Berkeley s Graduate Division after faculty input. This fellowship was made possible by the generosity of I-House alumni from the Golden Age (1946-1952), who created the fellowship in honor of fellow alumnus Rafael Rodriguez of Costa Rica. The fund provides for a full room and board grant for one entering graduate (Ph.D.) international student of great promise who may come from an underserved country and lack the financial resources to come to Cal and is deemed likely to benefit from, and contribute to, life at I-House. The recipient receives paid room and board fees for twelve months, a stipend from International House, and tuition and fees paid by the corresponding academic department for the first academic year.
