Please read all of the following information thoroughly. Success in your course will depend on your understanding the following information: 1. Orientation Bachelor of Science (Nursing) - comprehensive After Attending the Faculty Orientation, Orientation to the School and your course will be conducted at Curtin University, Bentley Campus on 11 July 2011 at 2.00pm in Building 405, Room 201. Your attendance is highly recommended. You will be given essential information that will answer your questions related to your units of study and your clinical practice. It is also a time to meet other nursing students, meet your student mentors and gain an insight into your Semester 1 units and what is planned for you in your course. Regional students will be advised on any orientation program by their Course coordinators you are not expected to come to Curtin Bentley campus. Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Conversion Program for Registered Nurses The orientation session for new students undertaking the 1 year Conversion Program for Registered Nurses course will be held on 14 July 2011 at 10.00am in Building 405:201, Curtin University Bentley Campus. It is highly recommended that you attend as you will be given essential information that will answer your questions related to your units of study and your clinical practice. It is also a time to meet other nursing students. Master of Nursing Practice (Graduate Entry Masters) The orientation session will be conducted at Curtin University, Bentley Campus on 11 July 2011 at 2.00pm in Building 405, Room 201. Your attendance is highly recommended. You will be given essential information that will answer your questions related to your units of study and your clinical practice. It is also a time to meet other nursing students, student mentors and gain an insight into what is planned for you in your course. 2. OASIS ( http://oasis.curtin.edu.au ) OASIS is a secure web portal to electronic services provided to Curtin students. It is a condition of your enrolment to log into OASIS at least once a week in order to read Official Communications from the University. Activate your account on-campus You can use the following procedure to activate your account or change your password using a Curtin work station: 1. Type in activate in the user name field. (Use the tab key to get to the next field). 2. Click Ok. 3. Type in the password activate. 4. Following the instructions on the screen. Resetting your password If you forget your password simply click on the Forget your password? link on the OASIS login screen. Deferred examinations will generally be held at the same time as the supplementary examinations, unless otherwise arranged with the Unit Coordinator 4. Health and Legal checks All students doing units with clinical practice need to submit proof of the mandatory health and legal clearances before clinical placement. International students can have their health checks done in their home country. Proof that the checks have been completed must be submitted in English to be accepted. WARNING: Health and Legal checks must be attended to if clinical experience or fieldwork is a part of your course. If you are unable to provide evidence for these checks, you will not be able to undertake clinical and be asked to withdraw from the unit. The Health and Legal Checks website will also inform you: How to complete the checks Where to find health check forms Where do I submit the completed forms? What should I do if I am already immune? If you have already been vaccinated against the conditions specified on the Health and Legal Checks website, you must show evidence from a doctor to prove that you have had the required health checks or have immunity. International students can submit vaccination information from their country of origin. Please note that information must be presented in English to be accepted. What are the costs of the health checks? Screening and vaccination costs are your responsibility and will vary for individual students, based on immunisation history. You will need to visit a general practitioner to confirm your immunisation status. Curtin Health Services in Building 109 on Bentley Campus are familiar with Health Science student requirements. Keep a record You are strongly advised to submit photocopies of your screening/vaccinations and keep the originals in a safe place. 5. Uniform Uniforms must be worn when in Clinical Practice or when in the nursing laboratories/simulation wards. Students will require their uniform in semester one and are required to order/purchase their uniform from the Curtin Bookshop. Clinical Name Badge Students are required to wear an identification badge during clinical placements. You can purchase your name badge from the Curtin Bookshop (Building 200, Bentley Campus) or order it online at: http://www.bookshop.curtin.edu.au 7. International Students Support The Centre for International and Professional Education (CIPE) is responsible for ensuring the coordination, orientation and enrolment of all International and RN Conversion students. Staff within the centre will assist with enrolment and information about academic and administrative issues related to student progress. Mentors Student Mentor Support All undergraduate students are offered Student Mentor support. The role of a student mentor has been designed to assist all Undergraduate students in their studies. The School of Nursing and Midwifery offers both a student mentor and an academic mentor service (for international students) as there is strong evidence that this type of assistance is positively correlated with academic success. The aim of the Student Mentor Program is to aid student transition into the School of Nursing and Midwifery and to enhance university life. The Student Mentor will meet regularly with a group of new to course students and follow a set twelve week program to assist in the academic and social success of new to course students by advising them on learning and support services within the University. Academic Mentor Support The academic mentor is available to advise international students about academic progress, to assist with problem solving and to provide guidance regarding additional learning and support services within the university. A program will be provided in StartUp week. 10.
