Kiontke - Letter of Nomination - Photonics21 Board of Stakeholders Election 2016
Photonics21 Board of Stakeholders - Letter of Nomination 1. Full legal name of the affiliation nominated as BoS Member (candidate s organisation): asphericon GmbH 2. Full contact details of the affiliation (street, postal code, country) nominated as BoS Member and invoice address (in case the candidate is elected, the affiliation needs to pay an annual service fee according the Photonics21 Terms of Reference 5 (10)): Stockholmer Str.9, 07747 Jena, Germany 3. Name of the suggested BoS Representative (the personal candidate) Mr. Sven R. Kiontke 4. Information about the BoS candidate and the BoS representative a) Description of the activities and information about the expected contribution and value added the nominated BoS member (candidates organization) will bring to the BoS 1 Founded in 2001 at the international optics centre of Jena, asphericon GmbH has become the global specialist for aspheric lenses for use in a wide range of optical applications. The organisation succeeded in developing for the first time an intelligent control system for computer-controlled CNC grinding and polishing machines. This makes it possible to produce aspheres in almost any shape and size by machine and in a manner that can be reproduced at any time up to 50% faster than the competition. In essence, the term Industry 4.0 has been put into practice with this patented control technology ever since the company was founded, enabling asphericon GmbH to become one of the world s technological leaders in the manufacture of aspheric optical components. The CNC technology for lens manufacture, which offers the benefit of being able to also process larger diameters, achieve significantly greater levels of precision and use a wide range of materials, was developed over the last 10 years. Over the course of its relatively short company history, asphericon GmbH has helped shape the trend towards technological development in this medium and high quality field and achieved the greatest success compared with its competitors. Its core competence lies in enabling time- and thus cost-saving manufacture with a proprietary control technology and being able to manufacture precise aspheres with a high desired surface quality and shape accuracy in combination with processing tools it has developed in-house and that are coordinated with its machine control system, as well as with a parallel measurement of the surface properties. Besides internal R&D efforts, asphericon is heavily involved in national and supraregional research cooperations. By working with diverse partners from the photonics industry, intensive research is undertaken into new technology approaches, various design questions and also new techniques for processing surface shapes (e.g. freeforms). Through this contribution to research, asphericon signifi- 1 The candidate is aware and accepts that according to the Photonics21 Terms of Reference a service agreement and a service fee invoice is to be signed / paid with the Photonics21 association. Photonics21 Board of Stakeholders - Letter of Nomination cantly helps to strengthen the European photonics industry, promotes cooperation and a technological exchange between research partners, and thus contributes consistently to boosting the European Economic Area. b)description of the activities and information about expected contribution and value added the BoS Representative (candidate / person) will bring to the BoS. Sven R. Kiontke is the founder and CEO of asphericon GmbH. By developing a unique technology to control CNC grinding and polishing machines, he revolutionised the entire process of manufacturing aspheric components. Under his leadership, a start-up company was turned into one of the world s technological leaders for aspheres within the space of a few years. More than 140 members of staff are currently employed at the headquarters in Jena, and over 600 customers worldwide are supplied with high-precision lenses. Mr. Kiontke has amassed over 15 years of managerial experience and is considered to be a proven optics expert. For the past 8 years, he has taken a leading role in the collaboration to develop DIN ISO 10110. Among other things, DIN ISO 10110-19 marks the first time it has been possible to publish an extensive compendium to describe freeforms. This allows for technical drawings to be drafted correctly for continuous and discontinuous surface and then used for processing. In various research projects, Mr. Kiontke has assumed a leading role both in strategic and operational matters, coordinated the project between the partner companies involved, controlled the internal development work, and engaged in external project communication. Alongside his DIN activities, he has, for instance, made a major contribution to developing a technology platform and thus to establishing a complete value creation chain for the manufacture of innovative optical systems based on freeform surfaces. Within this growth core Freeform Optics Plus (fo+) Mr. Kiontke is responsible for production technology and strategic development. The project results will represent a significant increase in the level of knowledge both scientifically and technically, as well as an innovative leap forward with the fundamental expertise acquired. This enables the centre of science and technology to be sustainably secured for modern optics in Europe and further expanded. As a member of various national, European and international organisations, Mr. Kiontke participates in a scientific exchange on current research questions and promotes debate through regular publications as well as talks and presentations. His proven expert knowledge makes him a sought-after interview and discussion partner. Through a regular exchange of ideas with colleagues and business partners, existing processes are optimised and new project ideas created. In the Board of Stakeholders Mr. Kiontke will actively contribute to strengthen the leading role of the photonics industry in Europe. Page 3 of 4
