We will serve as your ambassadors for Winter Welcome and are dedicated to helping you make a smooth transition to life at Syracuse, whether you re just starting your college career, have been at another institution, are returning from abroad, or are new to the United States. HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE This guide includes all the events that will take place from Friday, January 15, through Monday, January 18, and into the spring semester. We have marked all events you are required to attend with the M mandatory symbol, so you will want to put those events into your schedule planner first (see page 5). Some activities will be specific to your individual school and college, and others will be university-wide. SU I.D. WHAT IS YOUR SU I.D.? Your SU I.D. card is the official University identification card for every student, faculty, and staff member at SU. Your SU I.D. lets you do all the following and more: Gain entry to various campus facilities Access your meal plan Check out library materials FOOD ACCOUNT Ride campus shuttle buses for free Use campus athletic facilities Use FOOD and PLUS funds FOOD is a declining balance account, which can be used in all Food Services locations (including dining centers, food courts, and vending machines) for food and non-alcoholic beverage purchases. PLUS ACCOUNT PLUS is a declining balance cash account, which provides access to goods and services through your SU I.D. Card. The PLUS account can be used in campus washers/dryers, to buy tickets at the Schine Box Office and Carrier Dome Box Office, at the Schine Copy Center, in campus convenience stores, in the Bookstore, and many more locations. The amount you add for both FOOD and PLUS is charged directly to your student bursar bill. All meal plans come with an established amount of FOOD funds. PLUS accounts must be activated separately and take just $25 to get started. Get full details at housingmealplans.syr.edu/mealplans.cfm. OBTAINING YOUR SU I.D. Before the January 13 deadline, email your photo to housing@syr.edu so that your SU I.D. can be ready for pickup when you arrive on campus. If you emailed your photo by the deadline, your SU I.D. will be waiting for you when you check in to your residence hall or South Campus apartment. If you are commuting or live off-campus, your SU I.D. will be ready for pickup at the Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Service Center in 206 Steele Hall. SU I.D. cards will not be distributed before your check-in time. DIDN T EMAIL YOUR PHOTO? If you did not email your photo by the deadline, you need to visit the Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Parking Information During Winter Welcome Parking is restricted to certain locations during Winter Welcome 2016. Students will receive a Winter Welcome parking pass at Winter Welcome Check-In on Friday, January 15. Please park only in the designated Winter Welcome parking locations and display your Winter Welcome parking pass on the dashboard of your car. Academic Information PLACEMENT EXAMS All new Syracuse students are expected to take all applicable placement exams before registering for classes. You can take the online exams before 6 p.m. on Friday, January 15, from any computer with Internet access by going to myslice.syr.edu and clicking on take placement exam. For more information about the requirements specific to your program of study, consult the registration materials for your school or college. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT EXAM: Non-native speakers of English must take the English Language Assessment Exam. The exam will be given Friday, January 15, from 9 a.m. to noon (please arrive by 8:45 to be seated) in Gifford Auditorium, H.B. Crouse Hall. Bring a photo ID, No. 2 pencil, and your SU I.D. or your SCIS clearance form. FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT EXAM: If you are a new student who has had any previous instruction in or personal experience with a language and plan to continue studies in that language, you must take the appropriate foreign language placement examination. Please follow the instructions for registering for language classes, which can be found in the registration materials for your school or college. To be properly registered for French, German, Hebrew, Italian, or Spanish, you must take the appropriate placement exam online prior to registering. The placement exams are available at myslice.syr.edu. Placement exams for all other languages will be available by contacting the appropriate language coordinator in 340 H.B. Crouse Hall (HBC) or contact Colleen Kepler at cdkepler@syr.edu. You can find information about all languages offered at lang.syr.edu, click on Languages, and select the appropriate language. MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT EXAM: The mathematics placement exam is available online at myslice.syr.edu. You can take this exam from any computer and should complete it before you arrive on campus. If you cannot, you can go to any computer cluster on campus and take it there. A list of campus computer labs and their hours is available at its.syr.edu. After completing the exam, you can view your placement results by going to myslice.syr.edu and clicking on the view placement exam results link.
