THE IMPACT ON DP VESSELS DESIGN & OPERATIONS MARINE SAFETY FORUM Reference has been made to MTS guidelines in Safety Flashes USCG Various Safety Alerts 2013; Where ride-though capability is an essential part of the DP redundancy concept it should be proven by live short circuit and ground fault testing as per Section 9.2.5 of the MTS DP Vessel Design Philosophy Guidelines. MTS DP Committee are technical advisors to the USCG for their discussion with IMO regarding the revision of IMO/MSC Circular 645. DNV-RP-E307 This Recommended Practice (RP) is based on the DP Operation guidance of the Marine Technology Society (MTS) DP Technical Committee. ABS Guide for Dynamic Positioning Systems (The ABS DP Rules!) The DP FMEA is to be performed based on this Guide, IMCA M 166, IMCA M 178, IEC 60812, DP Vessel Design Philosophy Guidelines by MTS, Annex 4 of IMO High Speed Craft Code or equivalents. ENSURING ENHANCED DP CAPABILITY Follow class rules but remember these are the minimum technical standards / requirements Follow MTS guidelines and IMCA guidelines Define the Redundancy Concept and the Worst Case Failure Design Intent early When doing so, make sure it is technically correct and compliant not a wish! Design in Non-Critical Redundancy to improve the reliability and availability of systems Define the Redundancy Design Intent, the Separation Design Intent (DP 3) and the Technical System Configurations M3 Marine Expertise Pte Ltd 26

DP VESSEL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY DOCUMENT OR CONCEPTUAL DESIGN REPORT Can help to ensure that vessel owners, ship designers, shipyards and FMEA consultants are aware of the requirements during all stages of a new build DP vessel ADVANTAGES; Ensure compliance in all systems that are related to DP system piping systems, electrical power distribution, the correct type of position reference systems, etc. Avoid design changes during the building phase Enable the shipyard to accurately quote and eliminate the costs associated with re-design, re-work and delays during construction phase or when the vessel is in operation. Quote: The DP Conceptual Design Report was produced during the negotiating phase for this DSV and despite adding one (smaller) generator and reconfiguring the electrical SLD, it lowered the cost because the shipyard understood exactly what they were quoting for.
