Kokoda Track Foundation Archer Leadership Scholarships Call for applications - 2016 Overview Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF) is an international aid organisation working in Papua New Guinea. KTF supports communities in PNG overcome some of the tremendous challenges they face today. From a lack of adequate health care, to the half a million children who are unable to attend school because of the lack of teachers, resources, infrastructure and government capacity, KTF aims to make a tangible impact in the lives of the most vulnerable. We run programs in the vital areas of education, health, livelihoods, and leadership across more than 45 communities in the Oro and Central Provinces. These programs aim to train high quality teachers and community health workers, provide these professionals with mentoring and professional development opportunities, build educational and health infrastructure, fund the ongoing maintenance and resourcing of schools and aid posts, and provide remuneration to teachers and health workers across rural regions. Our livelihoods program aims to generate sustainable income- generating opportunities for women in remote areas via investment in state- of- the- art solar technology and agriculture. In 2016, KTF is continuing its Archer Leadership Scholars Program an opportunity for students studying across all tertiary institutions in Papua New Guinea. The Archer Leadership Scholars Program is a year- long leadership development program for exceptional PNG tertiary students who have demonstrated leadership potential. It will offer successful recipients a year- long suite of activities and programs aimed at developing their leadership skills and abilities. The premise behind the scholarship is that intensive leadership support and resource investment during a student s final year of tertiary studies will provide the recipient with a new platform to engage in leadership work and activities after they graduate. The leadership scholars program will identify, foster, and invest in an annual cohort of promising leaders and will provide a range of opportunities and resources to grow their leadership skills. 1

Program Outline The year- long Archer Leadership Scholars program consists of the following activities and opportunities: Education investment the scholarship covers a contribution towards the students tertiary fees for the final year of their studies at University or College in PNG 1. Living allowance the scholarship provides a contribution towards the students boarding, travel, and food costs for the final year of their studies at University or College in PNG. Resource investment each student receives an allowance to purchase educational and other relevant resources for their tertiary studies and leadership development. Resources may include laptop computers, mobile phones, wireless internet connections, textbooks, reading books, and materials to assist specific study areas. Student exchange period / leadership course the cohort of students will participate in a 2- week exchange program during their mid- semester break where they will travel to Australia. During this exchange period, students will complete an intensive, experiential leadership program including work experience program, an adaptive leadership course, and mentoring opportunities with prominent Australian leaders. Mentoring each student will be matched with a prominent mentor in PNG or Australia who will support them with guidance and coaching during their year- long leadership program. This one- on- one support is vital to students learning throughout the year and has been shown to have an enormous and transformative impact on students self- esteem, motivation, future goals, and leadership development. Community development placement the students will undertake a community development placement with the KTF. The community development placement will explore how innovative individuals and organisations are addressing PNG s social needs and creating positive change. Community Project - students will also undertake a community development project during the course of the year and will be supported financially and with mentoring and project supervision to undertake this project. Work experience placement the students will undertake a 2-3 week work experience placement at the end of Semester 2 in an organisation relevant to their field of study. The placements will be selected in consultation with the Foundation and the students mentor with the view to create a pathway to employment for the student after they graduate. 1 Students must be enrolled in their final year at a tertiary institution in PNG in 2016. 2
