ATV INDUCTION TRAINING OFFICER / COURSE PRESENTER INSTRUCTIONS & COURSE DOCUMENTATION SUMMARY
PURPOSE The purpose of this document is to clarify the minimum requirements that an ATV Induction course should include to improve consistency throughout Surf Life Saving Queensland. ATV INDUCTION COURSE PRE-REQUISITES The minimum national requirements to operate an ATV are: 1. Must hold a current car driver s license a. The license must not be expired and not be suspended/cancelled. b. The license can be provisional or open NOT LEARNER c. Provisional license holders should be aware of any towing restrictions COURSE CONTENT The course should cover the following topics/tasks as a minimum: 1. Familiarisation with the ATV used at your location 2. Familiarization of your local ATV manufacturer s guidelines 3. Knowledge of SLSQ ATV Standard Operating Procedure a. As per SLSQ Patrol Operations Manual Section LS 0018 4. Demonstration by each candidate that they can operate the ATV according to SLSQ standards and requirements a. This should be completed with each candidate demonstrating tasks as listed on the observation checklist found on page 42 of SLSA ATV Operator Learner Guide COURSE RESOURCE The following documents should be used as learning resources when conducting the ATV Induction course: 1. SLSQ Patrol Operations Manual Section LS 0018 Vehicle Operations 2. SLSA ATV Operator Learner Guide a. Found on SLSQ TAF Portal (requires username and password access see you club Chief for this resource if you do not have access to the SLSQ TAF Portal) NOTE: the SLSA ATV Operator Learner Guide is to be used as a reference document only. It is recommended to provide a copy of this resource to each candidate however it is not mandatory for each candidate to receive a copy. The ATV could chose to use this document as a reference guide throughout the ATV Induction course. It is mandatory that the ATV train candidates according to the knowledge and procedures as listed within this document or WHO CAN TRAIN/ASSESS The ATV Induction course does not include formal assessment however each candidate must demonstrate the ability to operate an ATV according to the Observation Checklist and meeting SLSQ standard. In Surf Life Saving Queensland, the following people can conduct an ATV Induction course: 1. Hold the Course Presenter ATV award OR 2. Hold the ATV award PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION It is up to the ATV / Course Presenter ATV to develop practical tasks that allow each candidate to demonstrate the practical components s listed on the Observation Checklist.
NOTE: The ATV / Course Presenter ATV MUST only sign the Individual Observation Checklist stating a person is competent to operate an ATV AFTER physically witnessing each candidate operate the ATV safely according to SLSQ Standards and the tasks stated on the Individual Observation Checklist. INDUCTION EVIDENCE/DOCUMENTATION The following documents are to be completed as evidence of being inducted into the operations of an ATV: 1. SLSQ Individual Observation Checklist a. Found attached to this document b. Each checklist allows the recording of up to 10 people 2. ATV Induction Declaration a. Found attached to this document b. Each person must complete this Decleration 3. SLSQ Form 14 a. As per normal procedures with any course Where do these documents need to go? Similar to proficiency documentation, the surf club/ surf life saving service must keep the Individual Observation Checklist AND ATV Induction Declaration at their club for 18 months OR until 31 st December of the following season to which the award was obtained. ATV INDUCTION PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS It is no longer a national requirement to undertake an annual ATV proficiency. Instead, the ATV operator s driving license must be checked each year for currency. Each Surf Club/Surf Life Saving service must manage this process. FAQ s What if I obtain my ATV Induction/Operator s award at a different club to my own club OR transfer clubs? Whenever a member is asked to operate equipment that they have not used previously, whether it be through training or operationally, the member should ask the Surf Club/Service to induct them into the new equipment.

If at anytime my Driver s Licence is suspended or cancelled I will notify my club immediately and shall not undertake ATV operations until my licence is reinstated.
