Research & nterprise is an innovative department within the university working with staff, employers, students and graduates to increase graduate employability and external income generation. This position will play a leading and integral part of our research support team, particularly working alongside the Research Development Manager (RCUK/Charities) and Research Development Manager (K), focused on developing, managing and expanding the University s uropean funding portfolio through greater engagement and partnership with international organisations. The post holder will take a lead on establishing and developing external networks on behalf of the university to raise its profile and build collaborations, this will involve regular travel outside of the UK. JOB PURPOS The post holder will develop, implement and deliver strategies to increase the quantity and range of uropean funding activity across the university, in particular through Horizon 2020, in line with agreed targets. This will include assisting academic staff with development and submission of U funding applications, facilitation of international networking, negotiation of collaboration agreements and liaison with College based project staff to ensure appropriate project delivery and financial reporting for awarded grants in line with research strategy. The post holder will take a lead in raising the profile of the research and innovation agenda and promote university expertise and ambition to a variety of external audiences, including the uropean Commission. The post holder will work closely with the Research Development Managers focused on RCUK/Charities and K (primarily TSB) opportunities to provide a flexible support service that responds to the fluctuating nature of funding calls. KY RSPONSIBILITIS Responsibility 1: Strategic development - To develop and maintain income generation action plans to target international SMs, corporates, public and third sector organisations (as appropriate) through liaison with senior research leads, Heads of Schools and College Directors of Research. - Take the lead, working closely with the wider Research and Income Generation Support team and College Research leads, in promotion and development of U funding proposals. - Development of new initiatives to improve support, engagement, quality and funding success rates including development of cross-disciplinary expert working groups leading on delivery of an U strategy. - Initiate and lead meetings and other internal and external events and influence staff and stakeholders to engage in bidding activity. Responsibility 2: Income Generation - To establish key relationships with University academics and Colleges, with national and international organisations including the business community leading to an increase in secured income for Horizon 2020 and other uropean funds. - To coordinate the timely, targeted, identification and dissemination of appropriate funding information to academic staff and delivery of grant writing clinics and researcher development workshops to raise the profile of U income generation opportunities in line with university strategy. - To provide pro-active support to College staff in identification, dissemination and development of a range of U funding applications. - Support Head of Research and College Directors of Research on implementation of appropriate protocols and systems for peer review of grant applications. - Support the wider RIGS team in the accurate costing and pricing of research projects in line with external funder regulations (e.g. FC); coordinating project approval and submission with senior staff; managing electronic grant submission and reporting systems (e.g. Je-S, egap, Participant Portal) ensuring timely submission of research proposals and associated grant reporting. Responsibility 3: Relationship Management - To take the lead on increasing our international presence, in particular through regular attendance at meetings in Brussels with C and supporting academic staff in networking at an international level and brokering new profitable relationships. - To act as the key contact and account manager for identified clients, maintain good client liaison and commercial practises, ensuring profitable, repeat business. - To establish key working relationships & networks with external stakeholders including uropean Commission, UKRO, national contact points, and intermediary organisations e.g. KTNs. Responsibility 4: Compliance - To be responsible for the compliance of all uropean Commission funded projects within scheme guidelines and any subsequent modifications including the production of management and financial information, coordination of committees, project closure and final reporting. - To maintain an excellent working knowledge of uropean funding schemes for Research, Innovation and Knowledge xchange and support the wider Research and Income Generation Support team in raising their awareness and understanding of scheme requirements. - As institutional LAR act as an expert on university and C guidelines and regulations providing guidance and advice to a broad range of staff across the university. Responsibility 5: IP management & post award oversight - Where the university is a partner in a consortium, negotiate and agree terms of collaboration, taking advice from and raising any areas of concern with Income Generation Manager (IP & Contracts) and on substantive issues with Head of Research/Director of Research & nterprise. - Support academic and College staff with project kick-off meetings, ensuring key understanding of funder requirements and providing clarification of roles and responsibilities. Responsibility 6: Data management & reporting - To provide management information and reports such as current U project portfolio, proposals submitted, success rates and pipeline to line management, clients, University staff, funding bodies and other partners as appropriate to share best practice, improve success rates and influence future bidding strategy. - To deliver and report on agreed key performance indicators to the Head of Research, within agreed deadlines and ensure that an appropriately robust audit trail of information is maintained to support these reports. - Develop and disseminate information on best practice relating to the management and administration of research funding through liaison with internal contacts and external bodies and influence colleagues at all levels to adopt best practice. Responsibility 7: Profile raising - To represent Research & nterprise at internal and external events and on relevant regional, national and international interest groups, partnerships and committees as appropriate. - To increase awareness of C opportunities across the university through liaison with and the coaching of academic staff, identifying individual College needs and delivering workshops/seminars to address these. - Delivery of a regular series of stakeholder engagement events in collaboration with Research Development Manager (RCUK/Charities), Knowledge xchange Manager and College based BDMs to raise awareness of mechanisms to engage with the university, access expertise and funding support available. Responsibility 8: Training and Development - Take a lead on the development and the delivery of appropriate training events, written materials and otherwise on C funding opportunities for research, project development and post-award management, undertaking relevant CPD to maintain/develop on-going expertise in C research funding. In addition to the above, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Page 4 of 7
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Scope and dimensions of the role This role will require pro-activity and a strong commercial acumen with an institutional focus balanced with customer needs. The role will support the Head of Research, Colleges and wider Research and nterprise department in the delivery of key strategic outcomes. The post holder will be expected to be a self-starter, with excellent knowledge and expertise in developing collaborative funding proposals and be an effective communicator. As a well organised team player the post holder will have a good understanding of Higher ducation, SMs, business support, marketing and event organisation which will, on occasion, involve flexibility in working outside of regular hours and often at short notice in line with client needs. The role will play an integral part in the development and delivery of research support within the Research and Income Generation Support team to ensure delivery of the university s income generation targets.
