Welcome Hello, and welcome to Simpson University! We re excited that you ve decided to visit us. Genesis is a weekend designed to give you the chance to experience life at Simpson. The weekend is filled with class visitations, worship and ministry sessions, dynamic workshops, concerts and other special events. Inside this booklet you will find all the information needed for this weekend. Please take the time to review the material within it, as it is your official guide to all events. Here are some other pieces of information that will help you throughout the weekend: Name tags: Please wear your name tag at all times while on campus. Your name tag is your ticket to meals, events, Sunday Breakfast and The Shawn McDonald Concert. T-shirts: Students, remember to pick up your FREE Simpson University T-shirt! They ll be available on Saturday [11 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.] when you meet your admissions counselor. While there pick up the latest copy of the SU magazine filled with pictures and information about SU academic programs, college living and ministry opportunities. All juniors & seniors apply for FREE: Fill out an application during Genesis [only valid during Genesis], and we ll waive your $50 application fee. Questions? Need Information? There are five stations located around campus that will serve as information booths for Genesis 2010. Feel free to stop by any of the booths if you have any questions. Important Information Lost and Found: If you lose anything during your stay [or find something that s not yours], come to the Welcome Tent. Campus Guidelines: Please review all campus guidelines and proper student conduct located on page 11. Security: Campus Safety will be on duty throughout Genesis Weekend. If you need to contact them, call 530-941-7592. Additionally, one Resident Director or Resident Assistant lives in each dorm and will be accessible throughout the weekend. Chartwells Dining Services: Chartwells is the food service provider for Simpson University. Chartwells has been at Simpson for the last 9 years. Staff members not only feed the students but like to get to know each and every one of them on a personal basis. They look forward to seeing you over the weekend! If you have any questions, please locate one of their managers, who will try to help you in any way they can. Transportation: The Sunday Sacramento airport shuttle will leave promptly at 10 a.m. Shuttles will meet in front of the Emeriti Dining Center. It is very important to contact us immediately if your travel plans change. Go to the information booth in the Welcome Tent. Genesis Evaluation Forms: On Sunday morning your breakfast ticket will be paired with an evaluation form. Your input and feedback is very important to us, and we want to thank you in advance for any comments or suggestions you have on how to make our campus preview weekend even better. At 8:30 a.m. Travis Osborne, campus pastor, will give a devotional and parting words for the weekend. Dorms: Please use common courtesy while staying in a student s room. Speakers/Performers Mike Thibodeaux is founder of Simplicity Ministries in Portland, OR. Simplicity Ministries focuses on evangelism and discipleship, calling generations of all nations to the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. If you haven t had the opportunity to hear Mike speak, you are in for a transformative experience. Shawn McDonald is a gifted vocalist and guitarist best known for lending his fluid, breathy rasp to intoxicatingly passionate spiritual anthems. How were you wired by God? Finding a New Home Church Student Leader (MOD 62 capacity 36) Helping students who are entering a new phase of life to figure out what important qualities are in finding a new home church. We will also discuss the importance of these qualities in anyone s attempt to establish home in a church family. College Life Student Leader (LaBaume-Rudat 101 capacity 45) Straightening out college misconceptions, time management (prioritizing), and getting involved in college. Lectio Divina Student Leader (LaBaume-Rudat 103 capacity 39) An in-depth discussion of the importance of prayer and scripture meditation in daily life. Practicing how conversing with God is possible even in the midst of a busy schedule. Campus Guidelines 1. Simpson University is a smoke-free, drug-free, and alcohol-free campus. We expect all guests to abide by this policy. 2. Students are not permitted in the rooms of members of the opposite sex at any time. 3. Please observe Simpson s curfew time of 2 a.m. 4. While on campus, your style of dress should not compromise recognized standards of cleanliness, modesty, and good grooming. 5. Elementary Math ORIENTEERING Dr. Paul Stonehouse Date: March 12 Where: Room La Baume-Rudat 209 Refreshments at 4:30 p.m. Seminar Begins at 5 p.m. Abstract: Whether through calculating slope angles, measuring distances, shooting bearings, or estimating travel time, navigation via compass and topographical map (aka orienteering) employs a variety of elementary mathematical skills. In this talk, we will first introduce basic orienteering techniques and discuss their relationship to more modern technologies like GPS. We will then briefly practice these new-found skills through several outdoor orienteering exercises. No previous knowledge of orienteering will be assumed. Participants who wish to take part in the orienteering exercises, though, are asked to wear rugged shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.
