If you needed $500, $1000 or more, who would be able to give it to you? Would they be able to give you money several times a year for each semester of college? If your answer is NO then you will need to apply for Financial Aid and scholarships RIGHT NOW!!!
A person or organization gives you money for something you've done or can do, such as getting top grades, being a stand-out athlete or showing exceptional leadership in the community. It s FREE college money. It s usually an application PLUS an essay, a project or a video presentation, etc. All scholarships are different. Applying doesn't cost you anything except the price of postage and a few hours of work. As long as you meet the qualifications, you should apply for as many scholarships and grants as you can.
Merit-based: Based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities, and often factors in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. Need-based: Offered solely on the basis of financial need. You don't have to be the best student in the class. Student-specific: Qualify by gender, race, religion, family/medical history or other student-specific factors. Career-specific: Geared toward students who plan to pursue a specific field of study. College-specific: College-specific scholarships are offered by individual colleges to highly qualified applicants.
Be Thorough Apply to all scholarships for which you meet the criteria. Watch Deadlines Applications submitted after deadlines will not be accepted. Carefully Read Required Qualifications Make sure you meet ALL of the requirements of the scholarship. Write Appropriate Essays Some essays are topic specific. Make sure you answer the question. ALWAYS proofread your essay!! Stay Positive Don t assume someone else will win the scholarship.

Avoid Scholarship Scams! Federal Trade Commission: www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams The FTC cautions students to look for these tell-tale lines: The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back." "You can't get this information anywhere else." We need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship." "We'll do all the work. You just pay a processing fee." "The scholarship will cost some money." "You've been selected" by a "national foundation" to receive a scholarship or "You're a finalist" in a contest you never entered.
