Approximately 75% of adults have a Facebook account and the majority of users log on to the site at least once a day. What is the consequence of the fact that Facebook users can t avoid exposure to the political content posted by their friends when they use the site? In the context of the increasing level of partisan polarization among American political elites, the radical change brought about by social media to the way that people engage politically has fostered people s increasingly negative feelings toward those whose viewpoints differ from their own. We ll explore how social media usage facilitates psychological processes that affect the way Americans form their political identities and evaluate people who identify with the opposing political party. Walkabout in the Marshall Islands Gene Tracy, Chancellor Professor of Physics Small Hall, Room 110 The Marshall Islands of Micronesia have been inhabited for two thousand years. The Marshall Islanders had a self-sustaining and vibrant ocean voyaging culture until the Japanese banned interisland trade in the 1920s. After WWII, as a US Trust Territory, the islands were the site of 67 above-ground nuclear tests at Bikini and Enewetak Atolls. Averaging only a few feet above sea-level, they are also one of the most vulnerable populations on Earth to climate change. In this talk I will recount my trip to the Marshall Islands in July 2016 to meet Alson Kelen, the former Mayor of Bikini and an ocean navigator, practitioner of the ancient art of wave piloting. Child Witches in Spain, 1550 1650: Their Implications for Law and Society Lu Ann Homza Professor of History Tucker Hall, Room 127A In May 2014, an archivist in Pamplona, Spain, was instructed to look through a box that had recently been discovered in a closet. The box contained a new document that no one knew existed: a 1611 trial for slander for calling someone a witch, which featured the testimony of multiple children, aged 5 to 15, who self-identified as witches and who spoke for the defense or the prosecution. Child witches were common in northern Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but never before have we encountered such an extensive recording of their voices and stories. Their testimony illuminates why they were legally effective, and raises questions about the limits to charity and community in Spanish villages. The Illusion of Control: Understanding and Getting More Out of Your Unconscious Brain Peter M. Vishton, Associate Professor of Psychology Integrated Science Center, Room 1221 We all possess intuitive theories about how our minds function. A great deal of psychological research, however, suggests that many of these strongly held intuitions are incorrect. For instance, most people presume that our voluntary behaviors start with a conscious decision to perform that action. There is now strong evidence that we only become consciously aware of deciding to act after we have already begun the process of implementing an action. The belief that conscious thoughts and decisions precede and control all or even most of our behaviors is an illusion. This talk will explore the evidence for these claims and consider how we can consciously outsmart our unconscious. Investigating the illusion of control can lead to an overall better understanding of our community and ourselves. 9 10
