USD School of Law Private s 2014 15 A number of scholarships are available for continuing JD students during the 2014-15 academic year. These scholarships are funded through the generosity of our alumni and friends. They are designed by the donors to recognize and encourage the achievement and potential of USD JD students. Consideration for these scholarships is generally based on academic performance, financial need, diversity and/or other specified qualifications. Students, who meet the designated criteria and wish to be considered for one or more of the following scholarships, should submit an application to the Private Committee in care of the Financial Aid Office. Please note that the criteria, number of awards, and amount of money awarded for these scholarships may change at any time due to funding, endowment earnings, donors restrictions or other institutional priorities. All scholarships will be coordinated with other financial aid. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: 1. recipients will be notified by email in October 2014. 2. All scholarship awards will be applied toward tuition charges. The award will be split between fall and spring tuition charges equally. 3. Only USD Law 2L, 3L, and 4L students are eligible to apply. 4. The Private Committee will make all scholarship award decisions. Decisions of this committee are final. Alec Cory/Procopio This $2,000 scholarship, in memory of Alec Cory, will be awarded to a 3L or 4L law student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to public interest law. Albert and Mae Lee Memorial This $2,900 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates a strong scholastic ability and outstanding moral character. Barbara L. MacLean Memorial Through the generosity of alumni Michael 83 and Debbie 84 Rider, this $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates financial need. Blanchard, Krasner & French Two scholarships in the amount of $3,300 will be awarded to continuing law students who demonstrate financial need. BusinessLink This is part of a USD-wide scholarship created by gifts from BusinessLink Members (a corporate consortium). The law school scholarship of $1,950 will be based on financial need and/or merit. C. Hugh Friedman Endowed A scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded to a student who is beginning his/her final year of study at the School of Law (third year full-time student or fourth year part-time student), and who has demonstrated an interest and proficiency in business law. The student must have taken one or more courses in business law (examples include, but are not limited to, corporations, business planning, securities regulation and intellectual property), and have performed well academically in those courses. Preference is given to students with financial need. Cary Mack A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates financial need. The Christopher McCallister Memorial Family, friends and the Class of 2007 seeking to honor the leadership qualities and entrepreneurial spirit that were hallmarks of Chris McCallister s life created this scholarship. An award of $2,900 is available to a third-year law student in good standing who contributes to the diversity of the law school and/or to the legal profession generally because of their socio-economic background, life experiences, personal circumstances, or other obstacles he/she may have overcome. Preference is given to a student who has demonstrated leadership and entrepreneurial skills in professionally related endeavors or in community service or volunteer work (may include leadership roles in student-related activities and projects). Please describe your qualifications. Class of 1963 This $5,000 scholarship from the Class of 1963, in honor of their 50-year reunion, will be awarded to a 3L or 4L law student with demonstrated academic success and financial need. Class of 1975 This $3,000 scholarship from the Class of 1975 will be awarded to a 3L or 4L law student with demonstrated academic success and financial need.

Congresswoman Lynn Schenk Endowed Law The scholarship will be awarded to a female law student who demonstrates tenacity and determination and who is of modest family economic circumstances. The awardee must be highly self-motivated (demonstrated by work outside of school and overcoming obstacles in pursuing education) and see challenges as enriching. The awardee must have knowledge and appreciation of the struggles of women in America for equality and of those who came before her to take on the struggles of equality. She must demonstrate a desire to open doors for others in the future. Additionally, the awardee must support the values of the Lawyers Club of San Diego, a feminist bar association seeking to advance the status of women in the law and society. Note: Finalists will be required to submit a supplemental 1-page statement addressing three additional topics. Darling Foundation Created by the Hugh and Hazel Darling Foundation, this $2,100 scholarship will be awarded to a law student demonstrating financial need. David S. Casey Trial Advocacy Two scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded to students showing promise in trial advocacy through achievements in connection with the Mock Trial Team, distinction in class work related to trial advocacy, or other such indicia of promise. Delroy Richardson Endowed Law San Diego Gas and Electric endowed this scholarship in memory of their long-time employee Del Richardson. Del was a USD alumnus who was active in community and campus diversity issues. Grants from the Richardson family, other alumni, law firms and corporate contributors have supplemented this endowment. This scholarship of $3,300 is awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need and has evidence of strong academic achievement. Donna Lee Arledge Memorial Fund This $2,500 scholarship was established in loving memory of Donna Lee Arledge. It will be awarded to a law student whose life has been impacted by cancer. Fiorenza and Hernando Courtright Endowed Two scholarships of $4,600 will be awarded to students whose family responsibilities require them to render financial assistance to their parent(s) or sibling(s) while attending law school. Single parents who are supporting their own children are also eligible to apply. Frank E. and Dimitra F. Rogozienski This $3,900 scholarship will be awarded to a law student who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance in business oriented law courses. Examples of such courses may include, but are not limited to, antitrust, bankruptcy, business planning, corporate finance, corporations, tax and other related corporate/business law courses. A preference will be given to third-year full-time and fourth-year part-time students who have completed two or more such courses. Gerald and Donna McMahon Endowed Endowed by a gift from Gerald and Donna McMahon, a $2,200 scholarship will be awarded to a student in good academic standing and who is making good progress toward completion of the requirements to earn the degree of Juris Doctor. Grant Morris Endowed Fund The University of San Diego School of Law Class of 1976 established an endowed scholarship in Professor Grant Morris name. It honors his nearly 30 years of service as a distinguished professor and twice acting Dean of the Law School. This scholarship of $3,000 is awarded to a continuing law student in need of assistance to lessen the financial burden of attending law school.

Helen and Webster Kinnaird Law A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing law student (2L, 3L or 4L) who demonstrates financial need. Higgs, Fletcher, and Mack LLP Diversity The Higgs, Fletcher & Mack Diversity is a $10,000 scholarship awarded to a student who has a demonstrated commitment to serving diverse communities. The scholarship supports the firm s efforts to promote diversity in the San Diego legal community and will be provided to a third (or fourth) year law student. Irvin and Eleanor B. Kahn Endowed A $4,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates financial need. James E. Spain Family Law School Student Aid Endowment This scholarship provides five $6,000 awards to assist continuing part-time students. John Winters Memorial Fund This scholarship was established to memorialize John M. Winters and his many years educating law students and his contributions to the School of Law at the University of San Diego. This scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a third-year full-time or fourth-year part-time student. The primary criterion for selection is financial need. In those cases where more than one student qualifies based on relatively equal need, preference shall be given to the students who have families to support. If two or more students qualify based on financial need alone, any such tie shall be broken by taking into consideration the student's academic accomplishments and contributions to the School of Law. Kevin & Bryan Briscoe Memorial Endowed Fund A scholarship of $2,200 will be awarded to a student who has been involved in community activities or volunteer service during law school. Kim and Mark Koro Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates financial need. Lou Kerig Endowed Fund Alumni seeking to honor Professor D.V. (Lou) Kerig created an endowed scholarship fund. Two $3,900 scholarships will be awarded to students who are in the upper 50% of their class, have financial need, and have excelled in Evidence. The Honorable Louis M. Welsh Endowed An endowed scholarship fund was established to continue the legacy of the Honorable Louis Welsh. The $2,000 scholarship will be awarded to encourage a continuing student who exemplifies the highest ethical standards and believes in the humanity of the law. The applicant should demonstrate their passionate desire to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a trial lawyer. The applicant should show academic promise and demonstrate financial need due to life issues. Lawrence Mahlum Memorial Fund This $2,100 scholarship will be awarded to a student who is in the work place or in the military and is wishing to obtain a law degree to enhance their skills or make a career change. Priority will be given to a part-time student. Mary and Alan Schulman Students qualifying for this $5,000 scholarship will be in the top half of the class and they must contribute to the diversity of the law school generally because of their socio-economic background, life experiences, personal circumstances or other obstacles they may have overcome.

Michael Konz Memorial Michael Konz was a second year evening law student who worked full time at General Dynamics Convair Division as a human relations specialist. Michael was killed tragically in a work-related incident in 1992. His family, friends, classmates, professors, colleagues and General Dynamics established this fund in Michael s memory. This scholarship of $2,000 will be awarded to a continuing part-time student in the upper one-half of the class who works full-time. A candidate who best embodies Michael's philanthropy, wit, optimism, integrity, and his dedication to the study of law will be selected. Letters of recommendation are suggested. Michael Mohr Memorial s Two $2,300 scholarships will be awarded to students who have finished in the upper one-half of their respective division. In addition, the students should demonstrate financial need and must have participated in the intramural program or allied activities, displaying strong character, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the program. Moller Endowment Two $4,500 scholarships will be awarded to a continuing law student who demonstrates financial need. Richard A. Bayer Endowed One scholarship in the amount of $2,100 will be awarded to the first-year part-time student who earns the highest grade in Property. Ronald Maudsley Memorial Professor Ronald Maudsley, during his life, stressed the importance of aspiring to the highest possible standards and working up to one's fullest potential. The award of $1,000 originally funded by the Maudsley family to memorialize Ronald Maudsley s commitment to the University of San Diego will be given annually to a second year full-time or part-time student who best exemplifies these traits, taking into consideration his/her academic accomplishments at the law school and the potential for scholarly achievement. Roseann Gerold Hoffman Endowed Created in memory of his wife, Judge Herbert Hoffman established this $1,700 scholarship that will be awarded to a full-time law student, who demonstrates strong moral character and financial need. Sol G. Dubroof Memorial This $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing student who demonstrates financial need. Stephen C. Ferruolo and Julie Robinson Funded by the generosity of Dean Stephen Ferruolo and his wife Julie, a $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing student who demonstrates financial need. The Vargas Funded by a gift from USD Law Professor Jorge A. Vargas and his family, this $5,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need, has evidence of strong academic achievement and makes a formal commitment to improve relations between the United States and Mexico in the legal or judiciary areas. Tim C. Rothans Public Service This $2,600 scholarship will be awarded to a part-time law student, currently employed, who is interested in serving the public in their legal career. The classmates and family of Mr. Rothans who created this scholarship hope that will inspire future generations of professionals to serve the public s interest.

Turner Diversity This $5,000 scholarship has been funded by Vickie Turner, a past Distinguished Award recipient. The scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded to a student who enriches diversity, demonstrates need and has evidence of strong academic achievement. Warren Family Endowment For Student Assistance This scholarship provides $6,600 awards to assist students in the second and third year full-time divisions.
