1878 Benedictine Sisters arrived in Bismarck on March 21 to establish an academy. Due to settlers suffering, they decided their help was needed in the health care field. 1885 Lamborn Hotel purchased for the purpose of establishing a hospital. The hospital opened on May 6. Sister Alexius Kurst, OSB, was the first administrator. 1886 Theodore Roosevelt was a patient at St. Alexius Hospital. 1887 Hospital blessed by Abbot Alexius and renamed St. Alexius Hospital. 1888 Sister Regina Ott, OSB, appointed administrator. 1885-1889
1890-1900 1892 Sister Boniface Timmins, OSB, appointed administrator. 1895 Patient admitted by the first woman doctor at St. Alexius: Dr. Kate Perkins. 1896 Louis Sitting Bull, stepson of Chief Sitting Bull, admitted to the hospital. 1899 Dr. E. P. Quain introduced aseptic and antiseptic methods of sterilization at St. Alexius Hospital. 1899 First telephones in the state were installed at St. Alexius.
1901-1910 1905 St. Alexius Hospital incorporated under the laws of North Dakota.
1914 Ground breaking for the new hospital on Ninth Street. 1911-1920 1914 President Woodrow Wilson visited the Sisters at St. Alexius. 1915 New St. Alexius Hospital completed with 150 beds and 18 doctors on staff. 1915 School opened for training nurses. 1918 The first nursing class with 11 students graduated. 1919 Rev. Thomas Starbec, first hospital chaplain hired.
1921 American College of Surgeons awards full approval to the hospital. 1921-1930

1941-1950 1941 Sister Andriette Rohrenbach, OSB, appointed administrator. 1945 First meeting of Board of Directors of St. Alexius Hospital held. All members were Benedictine Sisters. 1946 Bismarck Eagles Club donated St. Alexius first iron lung 1946 Ground breaking held for north wing. 1946 First set of triplets born at St. Alexius. 1948 Graduation of the state s first class of practical nurses. 1948 Sister Mary Mark Braun, OSB, appointed administrator. 1948 Two-year School of X-Ray Technology started by Sister Wanda Piotrowski, OSB, and accredited. 1948 Two-year School of Medical Technology approved by American Medical Association
1951-1960 1952 Sister Paul McCarthy, OSB, appointed administrator. 1954 Physical therapy opened. 1955 First three-year accreditation by JCAHO. 1956 Fully accredited pharmacy began with Sister Emmanuel Feist, pharmacist director. 1958 Hospital visited by Senator John F. Kennedy. 1960 Radiology program approved for three-year residency. 1960 St. Alexius was the first general hospital in the state to provide psychiatric care. 1960 Ground breaking ceremony held for the 1964 addition.
1961-1970 1962 Dedication, blessing of new wing. New psychiatric department first private unit in North Dakota in a general hospital; surgery and administrative facilities were also included. 1964 Central North Dakota School of Anesthesia for RNs established. 1965 The first Pulmonary Disease Center established. 1966 Sister Joanne Graham, OSB, appointed administrator. 1967 Intensive Care Unit (seven beds) opened on 2 Center. 1970 Dr. Carl J. Baumgartner delivered his 10,000th baby at St. Alexius.
1971-1980 1974 Lay membership on Board of Directors for the first time. 1976 Richard Tschider appointed administrator/ceo. 1977 CAT Scanner first used in Radiology. 1979 Heart & Lung Clinic opened in Boniface Hall. 1980 New operating suites, consulting and waiting rooms completed.
1981 First open heart surgery performed by Dr. Ed Williams, cardiac surgeon. 1981 Ground breaking ceremony held for centennial project. 1982 Helicopter air ambulance began as a joint venture between St. Alexius Hospital and Bismarck Hospital. 1982 St. Alexius Hospital name changed to St. Alexius Medical Center. 1985 Dedication of Heart Cath Lab. 1985 50,000th baby born at St. Alexius 1985 St. Alexius Medical Center was the first hospital in the US to use bar coding. 1988 The new Outpatient Surgery Center opened. 1990 St. Alexius was the first medical center in North Dakota to introduce laser lithotripsy. 1981-1990
1992 St. Alexius Medical Center implemented bedside terminals. 1993 Cardiac Catheterization Lab opened. 1993 St. Alexius Medical Center verified as a Level II Trauma Center by American College of Surgeons becoming the first in the region. 1993 Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab opens. 1993 State-of-the-art Bennett Contour Mammography Unit acquired. 1995 Telemedicine introduced at St. Alexius Medical Center called TeleCare Network. 1996 Integris V3000, an advanced vascular imaging system, was introduced at St. Alexius. 1997 St. Alexius was one of five hospitals nationwide to receive the NOVA Award from AHA. 1999 Mobridge Regional Hospital voted to pursue an affiliation with St. Alexius. 1991-2000
2002 A second heart cath lab opened. 2004 St. Alexius becomes the first hospital in North Dakota to implement in-hospital AEDs. 2005 St. Alexius received Granite Award from the Bismarck/Mandan Chamber. 2006 St. Alexius became the first medical center in North Dakota to receive three-year Magnet designation from the 2006 American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program. 2006 Andrew Wilson named president/ceo of St. Alexius. 2006 Minot Clinic opened. 2007 The Center for Family Medicine is opened in Mandan. 2008 On July 1, the 75,000th baby is born at St. Alexius Medical Center. 2001-2010
