The 22 nd Annual Changeover Dinner for Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Sunrise Inc. was celebrated by over 75 Rotarians and their partners in a night which took time to review and recognise the work, fellowship and achievements that occurred over yet another productive and successful Rotary year.mced by David Gilbey, after the initial acknowledgement of Country and Toast to RI (Len Wade) and response (D.G. Greg Brown) a number of awards were presented. The first, as presented by DGE Geoff Tancred, was the Graham Armstrong Memorial Trophy for those club members who have achieved 100% attendance throughout the year: Dennis Blackett, Marie Wood and Val Samuelson. (see Right) The Charles Houen Memorial Award is an award recognising one person s ability to serve the club and community Above Self. Presented by Margaret Houen this year s very deserving winning was Peter Gissing, acknowledged not only for his club participation but service within the CSU faculty, mentoring, assisting with the Junee Rotary Club, facilitating our very good website and working very efficiently within training areas in the District 9700. He also, along with his lovely wife Judy, kindly made their home available for a couple of club gatherings through the year. (Left: Margaret Houen and Peter Gissing) We also awarded this year three Paul Harris Fellowships to: Marie Wood, Alan Sharp and David Gilbey. PHF Marie Wood The best way to describe this lady is: The Quiet Achiever. This lady lived her early days in Tarcutta Street WW. She married Gordon a very successful business man who was also a fellow Rotarian within another club. Marie has been a Club Secretary, Club President and Attendance Officer. Marie helps at the majority of Club fundraising activities. And besides helping the Sunrise Rotary Club, Marie has done a great deal for the community of Wagga Wagga working over many years for the Golden Gown Committee, Inner Wheel, Micah House Fundraising, Lillier Lodge, Sisters of Charity, Northcott Society, Australian American Association, the Wagga Base Hospital Committee, Ronald McDonald House and the Carmelite Monastery. PHF Alan Sharp Since he joined Sunrise, this Rotarian has made significant contributions to the Club and to the community.
The oldest of four brothers, he grew up in Newcastle, and was very active in all sports. Following completion of his training at Newcastle Teachers College, he was posted to country schools in Gundaroo, Gunning and Griffith, at which time he married Norma. Following changes of career to the AMP and YMCA, he retrained in Special Education and returned to his first love, primary teaching. With Norma, and children Chris, Michael and Melinda, he moved west to take up the Principal s position at Euston. He took on many community roles, including secretary of the cricket club, member of Balranald Council and President of the Rotary Club of Robinvale Euston. Following his final position as District Superintendant of Broken Hill, he retired in 2004 to Wagga Wagga after 40 years in NSW education. He is currently active in the Retired Teachers Association, the Wagga Wagga Historical Society, and the Independent Retirees Association. He provides an attentive ear to, and cooks meals for, the numerous visitors to Micah House. At Ronald MacDonald House, his height proves of great value in checking and supporting compliance with pest and fire control regulations. (Right: Paul Harris Fellows Alan Sharp, Marie Wood & David Gilbey) Cricket has been a constant in his life, from playing 1st grade cricket in Newcastle, coaching U 16s team in Euston, to making the long drive to South Australia to watch the Tests as a member of the Adelaide Oval (as well as see the grandchildren!) In the Rotary Club of Sunrise, Alan enthusiastically fulfilled the role of Club Administration Director. He has also welcomed the opportunities to participate in interviews of applicants for the Sunrise CSU Scholarship and for other new generations programs. He is always ready to step in where there s a need, whether it s to BBQ some snags, pack up meeting equipment or thank the guest speaker. During his year as President (2011-2012), he compiled the very popular 2012 Calendar, featuring historic pictures of Wagga Wagga, a highly successful fund-raiser which also raised Sunrise s profile in the community. As Assistant Governor for the ten local clubs, he has provided gentle persuasive leadership while acknowledging every clubs autonomy. He is a perceptive and quiet achiever, with a strong sense of humour which he wickedly applies when it s his turn to be the sergeant. PHF David Gilbey This Rotarian made Wagga his home nearly 40 years ago, when he took up a position teaching English Literature at the Riverina College of Advanced Education (which later became Charles Sturt University). He is President of Wagga Wagga Writers Writers and was instrumental in the establishment of Booranga, the Riverina Writers' Centre. A published poet, editor, and book reviewer, this Rotarian has shared his enthusiastic love of Australian literature and creative writing with all who meet him. Over a period of 15 years, he has been a Visiting Professor for three years at Miyagi Gakuin University in Japan, where he has exposed students to the delights of English literature and writing. A member of the Wagga Wagga branch of the English Teachers' Association, he organises the annual HSC English Study Days in Wagga. While many people may not have met this Rotarian personally they feel that they know him through his regular chat session on ABC radio. Others may have seen him in his bright jacket as he compered the local Australia Day Ceremonies in recent years. Still others have joined him for fireside chats as part of adult education courses on literature. His engaging personality and generosity of spirit have bridged the divide that once existed between the academic institution to the North of Wagga and the rest of the community.
This Rotarian has a life beyond his professional presence with his wife Geraldine and their four children and two grandchildren. During the childrearing years, he took an active-role in parenting and supporting Geraldine in her work as a committed and busy general practitioner. From the day he joined Sunrise, this Rotarian has enlivened our meetings by his quips and jokes. He has extended warmth and friendship to all members. He is never slow to advise the cooks on the best ways to BBQ eggs and bacon. On his travels overseas, he has visited Rotary clubs in Japan and France, and shared his experiences with members back home. As Editor of The Keyway, firstly in print, then email and now on our website, he has led a team of bulletin reporters with flair. There was also a Sapphire Pin Award to Peter Gissing for his outstanding and continual contribution to Rotary and his community. It is most important to realise that with the presenting of either a Paul Harris Fellow or a Sapphire Pin $1000US donation is made to Rotary International Foundation which is our own Rotary Charity and goes towards worldwide Rotary projects to assist and aid humanity especially in the specific provision of peace and conflict prevention/resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; economic and community development to those most in need around the world. It also fosters goodwill and fellowship. Also along with these awards DG Greg Brown acknowledged the appreciation to three of our Rotarians towards the very successfully held Rotary Peace Communities International Conference proudly held here in Wagga Wagga: David Gilbey, Peter Gissing and Fred Loneragan, reminding us again of that extra service that these three men contribute above their own club activities. (Right: DG with DG GB) 2012-13 Rotary International Service Above Self Awards, introduced by Ian Simpson: Each year, the Board of Rotary International asks for the names and accomplishments of outstanding Rotarians for the annual Service Above Self award. The Directors created this award in 1991 to recognise those Rotarians who truly embody Rotary s motto of Service Above Self. Tonight a member of District 9700 will receive this prestigious Award, Rotary International s highest honor to be confered on a Rotarian. The nominee must have demonstrated: Exemplary humanitarian service, with an Emphasis on personal volunteer efforts, and Active involvement in helping others through Rotary Service on a continuing basis A maximum of only 150 Rotarians are selected each year and this year more than 350 nominationss were received worldwide. Rotarians and Friends of Rotary, it is my pleasure to inform you that Fred Loneragan, has been selected by the RI Board of Directors to receive the 2012-13 Service Above Self award.
Summary of Fred Loneragan s Service Above Self Fred Loneragan was born, raised & educated in the District 9700 city of Bathurst. (Below: PDG Fred Loneragan with DG Greg Brown) Professional Career Fred joined the NSW State Police Force in 1966, initially working in the notorious Kings Cross area of Sydney. In 1967, he transferred to Wagga as a Road Traffic Patrol Officer. In 1978, he took a Supervisor position with the Wagga Police & Community Youth Club (PCYC) and commenced a distinguished 22 year career assisting youth develop values and a more worthwhile lifestyle until retirement in 2000. Throughout his police career, Fred contributed to better Juvenile Justice as part of a team that developed the NSW Youth Justice Conferencing program, a more holistic approach to dealing with young offenders. The principles have spread across Australia and overseas and for a number of years Fred represented youth on the NSW State Government Senate Advisory Committee on Education. Rotary Service Fred Loneragan joined Wagga Sunrise Rotary in 2000, was Club President in 2004-05, our District Governor in 2008-09 & has been District Rotary Foundation Chair from 2011. As District Governor, Fred promoted Orphan Rescue Kits (ORK) as his special project to assist disadvantaged children of Africa, orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The project was well supported by our District and raised $68,000 for the Rotarians for Fighting AIDs (RFFA) orphan children rescue program in Nairobi, Africa. The Kits role enables orphaned children to attend school to gain an education and vocational training for a more meaningful and productive life. In 2010, RFFA in partnership with the Rotary Club of Nairobi provided these funds in support to 1,220 children in need of support (572 male, 648 female). To continue the program in December 2011, Fred joined a fund raising team to climb the 5,109m Mount Margherita (known as the Mountains of the Moon) in Africa. This climb, at great personal risk, raised over $40,000 for RFFA Australia to support the future education and development of HIV/AIDS orphans of the settlements of Nairobi, Kenya. Peace Through Service Fred s a committed advocate and has widely supported the Rotary Peace Communities Program that now includes over 55 Peace Communities worldwide. He was also Chair of the planning committee for the 2 nd Rotary Peace Communities, International Conference in Wagga, 21-23 September 2012. (Above: the ebullient incoming President, Peter Gissing)
Rotary Recognitions include Named a Paul Harris Fellow in 2006 for services to Rotary and the community of Wagga. Sapphire Pins in 2009 & 2012 for his ongoing commitment to alleviate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the children of Africa. Rotarians for Fighting AIDs (RFFA) Appreciation Award in 2010 for Saving Lives; Building Futures and Giving Hope to the children of Africa. Rotarians for Fighting AIDs (RFFA) Jerry s Hero Award in 2012 as Fund Raiser Extraordinaire for the children of Africa. Finally, in a personal message, RI President Tanaka writes: Fred Loneragan: With this Award, you are being recognised for the contributions you have made through Rotary over many years. I believe you are an extraordinary example of how each Rotarian can make a difference. I am honored to have you as my fellow Rotarian and grateful you have chosen to better the world by building Peace Through Service. Rotarians & Freiends of Rotary, please join with me in acknowledging Fred Loneragan as one of the outstanding Rotarians of our District. I now invite DG Greg Brown to present the Service Above Self Award for 2012-13. We were also entertained throughout the evening by Dejavu a duo consisting of Christine Greentree and Peggy Barrett who bought their own talents to add to the ambience of the evening. A big thank you to Christine and Peggy. We were duly fined by the incomparable Peter Brown and his able sidekick Brownwyn Hills (alias Dominic Ferlito) (see Above Right) who took us on a fine journey of exotic subjects and finished with a couple of memorable jokes!!
