Most Americans are the descendants of immigrants, some recent and some in the distant past. And they tend to be very proud of the nation's immigration legacy and the idea of their ancestors as huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Yet throughout the history of the United States, Americans have often denounced particular immigrant groups (e.g., the Irish in the 1840s, Chinese in the 1870s, Jews and Italians in the 1890s, and more recently Mexicans and Arabs) as undesirable, dangerous, and unassimilable. This session will explore the sources of this duality why Americans always have loved and hated immigration. 12:00 4:00 p.m. HAPPENINGS ON THE HOVAL Hogan Campus Center Oval (rain location fieldhouse) Bring your friends and family to the Hogan Oval for a day filled with your favorite fall activities and treats, including: kettle corn, caramel apples, hot apple cider, family photo booth, lawn games, pumpkin decorating and more!
