The Sheriffs DUI Unit has scheduled a sobriety checkpoint for the upcoming weekend. Impaired driving remains a deadly and dangerous occurrence on the roadways of Pima County. The upcoming sobriety checkpoint will be deployed on Saturday, May lath, 2013, in conjunction with traffic and alcohol enforcement efforts during graduation weekend. The Sheriffs Department would like to remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving. Incidents involving impaired drivers do not only affect the violator, but often other citizens who were otherwise uninvolved (i.e. passengers, occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians, etc.). Data collected in 2006 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), revealed that 64 percent of all drivers ages 15 to 20 involved in fatal traffic crashes had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of.08 or higher and died as a result of the crash - a fact which is both tragic and unacceptable. Graduation night is a big event for young adults. Help them make the right choice; don't let a poor decision ruin the life of your son or daughter or the life of someone else. Help us keep them safe!
