Finding Awards Scholarship or bursary-what s the difference? Theoretically, scholarships are awarded based on academic performance. Bursaries always have a component of financial need. In reality, many awards use a combination of the two criteria. Awards may also combine other criteria (ie. leadership ability, sports, and community involvement). You may also find that some people use the words interchangeably, so that what is called a scholarship may have a financial need component. So, when researching awards, read the eligibility criteria and selection procedures carefully to see whether you are eligible.
