To provide accessible support, encouragement and motivation to all nurses (novice to expert) in the assessment, planning and implementation of nursing care To provide leadership and consultancy for nursing practice. To be a change agent To utilise research inquiry to advance best nursing practice within the Emergency Department, and contribute to evidence-based policy and its evaluation. Provides one on one guidance and support to nurses in the clinical setting and exploit learning opportunities Encourages and fosters new initiatives and ideas and ensures these are implemented appropriately. Role models expert nursing skills in emergency nursing thereby facilitating the application of evidence based nursing practice. Coaches nurses in developing skills in critical thinking. Promotes extended practice opportunities with robust assessment and clinical support Conducts clinical assessments to meet policy requirements of the Emergency Department, Christchurch Hospital, CDHB and the Nursing council of New Zealand Demonstrates culturally safe practice, incorporating the Treaty of Waitangi principles of Partnership, Participation and Protection. Demonstrates nursing leadership and consultancy with a professional development focus. Expected Result Develops and implements a strategic coaching plan in partnership with nursing staff and the senior nursing team. Maintains records of coaching events to evaluate achievement of individual goals. Identifies and introduces advancements in nursing knowledge, relevant trends and changes in best practice for nurses in the specialty. Assists in reviewing orientation and preceptorship programmes within the department as required. Collaborates with the Nurse Educators in designing education programmes and assessment processes. Contributes to the performance appraisal process of nursing staff. Contributes to departmental meetings and patient care in a collaborative, active way. Promotes and utilises research and evidence-based nursing practice.

Expected Result Use a theoretical framework and personal philosophy of nursing as a basis for nursing practice and its advancement Reviews relevant literature relating to the emergency nursing and, in conjunction with the NM, ACNM, NE and Nurse coordinator clinical pathways applies new knowledge to advance best nursing practice. Participates in clinical audits to evaluate clinical standards and patient health outcomes. Contributes to policy development and change management processes within the emergency department to achieve cost effective quality health outcomes. Works within a collaborative model with the senior nursing and medical teams in implementing quality improvement initiatives. Assists in the application of research findings. Maintains own professional development Expected Result Maintains own clinical competence and develops own portfolio. Networks nationally and internationally and keep up to date on trends and developments within Emergency Nursing Attends educational opportunities and conferences relevant to the role and scope of practice. Presents papers at conferences and seminars, and presents papers for publishing. Undertakes other duties as reasonably directed by the Nurse Manager and Director of Nursing Services. Expected Result Ensures that all duties required to be performed from time to time in the best interest of Canterbury District Health Board are done so in an effective, timely and competent manner. Engages in regular meetings with the Nurse Manager and providing reports where indicated. Contributes to policy formulation / review and participate on committees and working parties as the service needs require. Implements emergency procedures and maintain a safe and secure work environment by following relevant Canterbury District Health Board policies, protocols and standards.

Expected Result Is aware of and complies with Canterbury DHB health and safety policies and procedures. HEALTH & SAFETY: Works in a safe and healthy manner to prevent harm to themselves or others. Is pro-active in identifying and controlling hazards through staff meetings; OSH Accidents are reported directly to their reporting clinical leader, manager or supervisor. Demonstrates competence and initiate action in emergency procedures, e.g. fire, cardiac and respiratory arrest. Completes and annually maintain Fire, CPR and IV certification and other competencies, e.g. electrical safety, back care training, as required by Canterbury District Health Board s policies and procedures. Identifies and takes appropriate action and promptly report clinical, OSH and security incidents. Reports any breaches and quality standard failures Reports any matters which are not clearly identified or do not comply with Canterbury s DHB s adopted policies or procedures. Observe all Canterbury DHB safe work procedures and instructions Ensure your own safety and that of others Report any hazards or potential hazard immediately Use all protective equipment and wear protective clothing provided Make unsafe work situations safe or, if they cannot, inform your supervisor or manager Co-operate with the monitoring of workplace hazards and employees health Ensure that all accidents or incidents are promptly reported to your manager Report early any pain or discomfort Take an active role in the Canterbury DHB s rehabilitation plan, to ensure an early and durable return to work Seek advice from your manager if you are unsure of any work practice QUALITY: Every staff member within CDHB is responsible for ensuring a quality service is provided in there area of expertise. All staff are to be involved in quality activities and should identify areas of improvement. All staff are to be familiar with and apply the appropriate organisational and divisional policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: Essential The Clinical Speciality Nurse Coach will Be registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand as a Registered Nurse. Hold a current annual Practicing Certificate from Nursing Council of New Zealand. Have validated clinical expertise in the emergency nursing. Have experience in clinical teaching and or preceptorship Have a demonstrated ability to contribute to, as well as develop, appropriate nursing standards and quality initiatives. Have a commitment to ongoing development of nursing skills. Have the ability to support nursing staff at all levels of practice. Have the vision and flexibility to accommodate change. Holds a post graduate qualification or has commenced post-graduate education relevant to emergency nursing. Desirable Hold a graduate qualification in Clinical teaching (or be willing to undertake post graduate learning in clinical teaching) Have experience in coaching and or mentoring.
