PROJECT INFORMATION At Habitat for Humanity, we believe a safe and decent home is a strong foundation for a family, an opportunity on which they can build a better life. Better, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development and the ability and financial flexibility to make forward-looking choices. We work in partnership with communities to address housing needs and build strength, stability and self-reliance. Rock the House will be building 12 homes for families living in substandard conditions, but will also feed into Habitat for Humanity s wider work in the community of Selopamioro. The impact of the homes will create a rock solid future for generations. Healthy homes, with cement floors, improved ventilation, clean water and sanitation facilities have immediate health benefits. Families will also receive skills training and with a home to call their own, they have a place to start a business and earn a steady income. ABOUT YOGYAKARTA Yogyakarta is considered the soul of Indonesia and with its sprawling temples it s easy to see why. However, 45 minutes outside the city are families in great need. Habitat works in the foothills of Jogya, transforming bamboo shelters with dirt floors and without access to water or electricity into homes. The situation is dire. Many families find seasonal work in agriculture and struggle to earn a steady income. Most earn roughly $5AUD a day when they find work. After essentials such as food, water and schooling, there isn t enough to repair their homes let alone build a safe, new place to live. FAST FACTS Trip dates: 30th September - 7th October 2017 Registration fee: $160 Fundraising goal (tax deductible): $1700 In country costs (including all accommodation, meals and transport): $700-$900 Registration deadline: 31 July 2017 For families living in poverty, a safe and decent home creates a rock solid future. If not for you, I couldn t change these conditions said Subadi, whose home was built with the help of Rock the House volunteers in October 2016. It feels like a dream. I am very thankful to the people who helped me build this house. Through shelter, we empower. e: rockthehouse@habitat.org.au 2
ABOUT HABITAT Habitat for Humanity Australia is a notfor-profit organisation that builds homes, communities and hope. Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Our work extends beyond building and repairing houses it also addresses land security, gives communities access to clean water and sanitation, provides education and training, and offers families in desperate need real hope for the future. To ensure lasting, sustainable change and to break the cycle of poverty for good, we take an approach that is holistic, community based and focuses on empowering families. Habitat works to alleviate global poverty by developing long term, sustainable solutions that provide a hand up, not a hand out. Our partner families help with the building process and join volunteers and local tradespeople to build their own home. We call this sweat equity. They also repay a low interest loan and undertake financial literacy training. Global Village, our international volunteering program, offers an exciting opportunity for you to learn about another culture, travel to destinations that are off the tourist track and enhance the ongoing work of Habitat for Humanity. It also gives an insight into certain areas of international community development. The Global Village Program is a vital part of Habitat for Humanity s work. ABOUT ROCK THE HOUSE In October 2016, 150 volunteers descended upon Yogyakarta, Indonesia to build 12 homes for families in need. Led by Suze De Marchi, front woman of iconic Aussie rock band, Baby Animals and Habitat for Humanity ambassador, Rock the House changed the lives of not only the 12 families who received new homes, but our volunteers too. Rock the House brings together volunteers of all walks of life, all ages and all backgrounds who spend one week building side by side families in need of safe and decent housing. Now, we re calling on you again to help build a rock solid future for generations to come. United we build. Put your hand up. e: rockthehouse@habitat.org.au 3
PARTNER FAMILY PROFILE Like every father, Subadi wants his children to be safe, which is why he works long and hard to give Vivian, 10 and twins, Aprita and Aprisa, 8, a better future. In Subadi s old single-room home, the sound of raindrops were always dreaded. In the house, there was only one space where Subadi s daughters had enough light to study. Each day, the girls would line up to do their homework on a section of the wall where the light shined brightest. But when we heard the drip drops of the rain, my children would scramble to move their books so they could continue studying and not get their work or themselves wet, said Subadi. Subadi finds work wherever he can - sometimes as a farmer, other times as a skilled labourer and even as an actor in local Javanese plays. Sometimes he must go into the city for work and earns just enough to allow him to send his daughters to the local school. Sadly he doesn t earn enough to provide a safer place to live as well. I feel sad my house is the way it is, said Subadi. My kids don t have a place to study. I would like them to do well at school and have a better life. With the help of our volunteers, in October last year, Subadi moved his family into a safe home they can call their own. Subadi s fo and wou rmer home has dirt pac ld leak in ked floo the rain rs. It feels like a dream said Subadi on moving into his new home. I am very thankful and grateful to the people who helped me build this house. Subadi s wife has been in Malaysia the past year working as a maid, and will stay there for another two years. She does not have a phone and neither does he. I want to surprise my wife with the house on her return, he said. It will be a great joy for her. This will help give our children a good education. e: rockthehouse@habitat.org.au a strong e will provide The new hom ghters. u r Subadi s da foundation fo 4
