A Message from Tom Gill, President It is my singular privilege to write to you as the new President of Urban Community School. Thank you for the support and kind words many of you have shared with me through this transitional phase. My mentor, Sister Maureen Doyle, has set a high bar, and provided an incredible foundation upon which to build. Her 34 years of leadership helped transform the lives of thousands of children who have walked the halls of UCS. She will always be a part of our Urban family, and I m honored to be chosen by the board to succeed her. When I began at Urban in 2010 as Development Director, I was motivated by the opportunity to work in a mission-driven school dedicated to providing opportunity to primarily low-income families and children through quality education. I knew that this school changes lives. Over the past seven years, I have been humbled by the amazing spirit and hope of our students and the dedication and selflessness of our faculty and staff. And I have been lucky enough to see so many of our students continue on to bright futures. As we look to the school s future path, I m excited to partner with our faculty, staff, board, the Ursuline Sisters, and our Urban families and community to continue improving the way we deliver quality education. Urban Community School has always been an innovator, and I am committed to building on that tradition. We will soon launch a new strategic planning process this fall to clarify our school s initiatives over the next few years. I also look forward to realizing the growth that our school has planned for over time. This year, we were proud to graduate nearly 40 students, but that number will grow significantly in a few years, thanks to the new Thomas Jeckering Middle School expansion in 2014. Soon, we will meet our long-term goal of educating 600 children annually. We also will soon open the US Lacrosse field at UCS and break ground on the Urban Squash Cleveland facility. Throughout the newsletter, you will see the bright smiles of our graduating class of 2017. This year s 8th level students were a truly remarkable group who are poised to make the leap as they transition from Urban to their high schools of choice. They will be attending 17 of our area s top high schools, including private, catholic, and high quality public schools. Many have received significant scholarship dollars, including four Sullivan Scholars. We all should be proud of their achievements, and we wish them all the best of luck.
