Teater headed the league in its early days. After graduatin frm Paintsville igh Schl in 1940 as an all-cnference ftballer, Teater resumed his playing career at Centre Cllege during the 1940-44 perid. ATLETICS AND ANTIBITICS In the brief time since the antibitics (antibacterial agents f bilgic rigin) became available, they have caused a revlutin in the treatment f infectius disease. Beginning with penicillin, a hst f pwerful antibitics have been identified and new nes cntinue t be develped in ur labratries. They are used t cure sme diseases, t prevent thers and t reduce the severity and effects f still thers. But, in spite f their benefits, they have certain limitatins and disadvantages: like clds, influenza r hepatitis. 1. They d nt help t cure virus diseases like clds, influenza r hepatitis. 2. They can cause side effects such as rash, dizziness and severe allergies. 3. Their cntinuing widespread use tends t develp new resistant strains f bacteria. 4. They may encurage harmful effects frm therwise inactive fungi in the intestines. 5. N ne antibitic is successful against all disease rganisms. 6. Casual use may develp individual sensitivity t a drug making it unuseable fr that persn when needed fr serius r lifesaving purpses. Fr all f these reasns, antibitic drugs, by Federal regulatin, can be prescribed nly by a physician. But there are ways f circumventing such regulatins and resrting

Anther player r even an ill-advised adult may ffer the unused prtin f a prescriptin they were given fr a cnditin "just like yurs." The athlete himself may have a leftver supply frm a pervius sickness which he believes t be the same as tday's illness r perhaps anther member f the family may have had a prescriptin fr a cnditin which seemed t resemble the present truble. Smetimes such self-diagnsis and selftreatment has unfrtunate results in side effects r the develpment f sensitivity, but the greatest danger lies in the delay f prper medical care until treatment is difficult. As a result, an athlete may miss several weeks f play when, with prmpt and prper care, he culd have returned t cmpetitin in a few days. Frtunately, the majrity f caches and trainers are nw aware f thse hazards and will nt permit such practices in their athletes r n the part f their staff. A.M.A. and the Natinal Federatin. Grdn is particularly qualified, having bth the educatin and experience t cntinue t prvide the West Virginia Cmmissin with psitive prgressive leadership. e is a graduate f Spencer igh Schl, received his Bachelr's Degree at Glenville State and his Master's Degree at West Virginia University. e was an utstanding athlete, participating in bth ftball and baseball, serving as ftball captain fr ne seasn. After a distinguished cllege career, he taught and cached in high schl fr 12 years befre entering the field f administratin as Principal at Wirt Cunty igh Schl. Later Mr. Eismn served as Cunty Superintendent f Schls. In 1948 he accepted the principalship f Charles Twn igh Schl and cntinued t serve in that capacity until elected Secretary f the West Virginia Cmmissin. Grdn's experience as Cach, Principal, Ftball Rules Cmmittee Member and as a member f the Bard f Appeals prvides an excellent backgrund fr his present psitin. Until this past seasn he fficiated ftball and he cntinues t serve as President f the Winchester Valley fficials' Assciatin. Mr. Eismn is a member f the fficial Bard f the Charles Twn Methdist Church, Past District Gvernr f Lins Internatinal and an active wrker in the prgram f State and Natinal Educatinal Assciatin. Until recently, he has been active in the By Scut prgram. Mr. and Mrs. Eismn have a sn, Danny, wh is presently a Junir in high schl and during the past seasn was ne f the utstanding interschlastic ftball players in the state. TURNAMENT FR GIRLS At the Bard f Cntrl meeting held during State Basketball Turnament time, the Cmmissiner recmmended t the Bard that a State Tennis Turnament fr Girls be attempted by i /e Assciatin, since it nw appears that enutjh interest has been created in the sprt in certain areas f the state t justify such a turnament. The Bard accepted the recmmendatin, and directed the Cmmissiner t explre the pssibilities f the suggested turnament and t cnduct it as such actin seems advisable. If a state turnament is held, the dates will prbably be May 13-14. The tentative site is Shawnee Park, Luisville. Principals f K..S.A.A. member schls wh might wish t enter individual cmpetitrs r teams in the prpsed turnament shuld ntify the K..S. A. A. ffice at nce.
