Continuing Medical Education Policy The American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). As such, we are required to meet the ACCME s expectations for our practice of continuing medical education. It is the policy of the ASDP to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its educational activities. Faculty participating in and planning the Annual Meeting must comply with all procedures governing disclosure. The ASDP has implemented a process where everyone in a position to control the content of an educational activity will present evidence-based content, disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest and discussion of unlabeled/investigational uses of a commercial product. In addition, presentations must be free of commercial bias and any information regarding commercial products/services must be based on scientific methods generally accepted by the medical community. Conflicts were resolved prior to this educational activity. Faculty who refused to disclose relevant financial relationships and discussion of unlabeled/investigational uses of a commercial product would have been disqualified from being a part of the planning and implementation of this CME activity. Presenters who qualified for the implementation of this activity are required to verbally disclose to the audience, immediately prior to the scientific presentation, any of the relationships mentioned above. Faculty relationships are also disclosed to audiences in this program book. CME Claims and Verification of Attendance You will receive a CME claim form in your registration packet on which you are to indicate the number of CME hours you are claiming for this educational activity. The number of CME credit available for each course is indicated by the course title in this program and on the CME claim form. Complete the form and submit 6 Meeting Program

it along with your session evaluation forms in a drop box near the ASDP meeting registration center. You must return this form in order to receive appropriate CME credit. Your self-claimed CME credits will be recorded after the annual meeting and an official CME certificate will be mailed to you. Allow six to eight weeks for processing. Appropriate credit for attendance should be ascertained and reported by individual physicians to the particular state or medical society to which he/she belongs. General Information For those registered in the AAD CME Transcript/Award Program, you should log in to the AAD Online CME Transcript Program to enter credits for this AAD Recognized program. PLENARY PROGRAM (cont.) Short Course II Mind the Gap! Niche Dermatopathology of Special Sites and Special Situations Friday, October 11 8:00 a.m. Noon Thurgood Marshall Ballroom, Mezzanine Level Course Director: Beth S. Ruben, MD University of California, San Francisco 3.5 Category 1 CME Credits TM Within the broad realm of diagnostic dermatopathology, there are certain areas in which we find ourselves slightly outside our comfort zone. Many of these practice gaps develop due to a lack of sufficient exposure to such cases, either during our training or in daily practice, and/or due to the rapid accumulation of knowledge and technical advances in such niche areas. Some of these subspecialties may fall under the purview of hospital-based or academic pathologists, making them even more inaccessible to outpatient dermatopathologists. Mucosal pathology, including ophthalmic, oral and genital, comprises one segment of this murky territory. The nail unit remains another special site, fraught with technical and diagnostic difficulty. Pediatric dermatopathology is also emerging as a newer niche, as knowledge advances rapidly in pediatric dermatology and we are called upon to help in special diagnostic situations. Progress in the molecular diagnosis of soft tissue tumors is revolutionizing the diagnosis and classification of those difficult neoplasms. This session will explore important entities, diagnostic dilemmas and technical advances in these categories, with the purpose of narrowing this gap and improving outcomes for patients. PLENARY PROGRAM (cont.) 2013 Elson B. Helwig Memorial Lecture Saturday, October 12 1:45 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Thurgood Marshall Ballroom, Mezzanine Level 1 Category 1 CME Credits TM This clinically oriented lecture began in October 1998 as the Special Guest Lecture. On July 31, 2000, the Special Guest Lecture was officially named the Elston B. Helwig Memorial Lecture in tribute of Dr. Helwig. The lectureship is awarded in recognition of excellence in the realm of diagnostic dermatopathology and for significant contribution to the dermatopathology literature and the education of fellows and colleagues. Luis Requena, MD, PhD Chair, Fundación Jiménez Díaz Professor, Universidad Autónoma Madrid, Spain Insights in Cutaneous Neoplasms Dr. Elson Helwig originally described many of the cutaneous adnexal neoplasms, both benign and malignant ones. In recent years, advances in immunohistochemistry and molecular biology have contributed to a better understanding in differentiation of some of these neoplasms. Furthermore, multiple cutaneous adnexal tumors, often with hereditary transmission, frequently appear in patients with systemic diseases and are often associated with internal malignant neoplasms. In most of these diseases, the genetic defect has been identified and it may be investigated in the cutaneous lesions. Along with the diagnosis, genetic counseling should be provided to the patient and the family. Dr. Requena will review the most recent insights of some cutaneous adnexal neoplasms and their consequences in the clinical practice Visit www.asdp.org/am13 for a list of previous Elson B.
