General Information Continuing Medical Education The American Society of Dermatopathology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Dermatopathology designates this live activity for a maximum of 35 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The American Society of Dermatopathology Annual Meeting (Program #254100) is recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology for 35 AAD Recognized Credits and may be used toward the American Academy of Dermatology s Continuing Medical Education Award. Continuing Medical Education Policy The American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). As such, we are required to meet the ACCME s expectations for our practice of continuing medical education. It is the policy of the ASDP to ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all of its educational activities. Faculty participating in and planning the Annual Meeting must comply with all procedures governing disclosure. The ASDP has implemented a process where everyone in a position to control the content of an educational activity will present evidence-based content, disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest and discussion of unlabeled/investigational uses of a commercial product. An MOC certificate will be available to print upon successful completion of the post-course online self-assessment. Learning Objectives The educational mission of the American Society of Dermatopathology is to teach, aid in the dissemination of knowledge and encourage research, thus improving the quality of the practice of dermatopathology. The annual meeting is primarily an educational one, offering members, fellows, residents and medical students lectures on current topics in dermatopathology, interactive sessions at the microscope, a selfassessment course, and opportunities for poster and abstract presentations. After attending the 2013 Annual Meeting, participants should be able to: Identify and avoid potential diagnostic pitfalls in the distinction of nevi from melanoma. Outline novel ancillary methods for the diagnosis of melanocytic nevi. Diagnose new and recently described tumors and inflammatory conditions of the oral and genital mucosa and the eye. Apply new and cutting-edge knowledge to pediatric dermatopathology practices. Recognize key histologic features of selected soft tissue neoplasms and formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis. Examine selected soft tissue tumors by utilizing useful ancillary diagnostic tools. www.asdp.org/am13 7

Learning Objectives (cont.) Diagnose a wide variety of adnexal tumors by utilizing newer techniques for diagnosis and relevant genetic testing. Differentiate critical reagents for direct immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry. Enhance existing knowledge on the use of direct immunofluorescence. Apply innovative methods to diagnose infectious diseases of the skin. Identify how developments in basic science impact the diagnosis and guide skin disease therapy. Increase performance on MOC examinations. Summarize the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Pathology requirements and timelines for maintenance of certification. Poster Presentations 1 Category 1 CME Credit TM (participants will earn.5 Category 1 CME Credit for each Poster Defense Session attended) Basic research, practical techniques and new clinical or histopathologic entities will be presented in this traditional and popular format. Posters will be on display in a single poster session Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning. Residents and fellows-in-training are eligible for the ASDP Physician-in-Training Awards. Awards will be presented on Sunday morning, 8:30 a.m. 8:45 a.m., immediately before Short Course IV. Poster Defense Sessions The poster defense sessions will provide an opportunity for discussion between poster presenters and attendees. Balin, MD, PhD Sally Balin Medical Center for Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery General Information The ASDP Slide Library opens Friday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m. and will be open 24-hours-a-day through Sunday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. Selected cases from the continuously growing slide library will be available for microscopic examination. Cases are accompanied by the diagnoses and other relevant written information and references. The 2013 Slide Library handout with case summaries, diagnoses with discussion and references will be available inside the library room. Upon completion of study, participants should be able to: Explain histologic diagnoses of various skin conditions, including the use of ancillary studies, where appropriate. Interpret histologic diagnoses of uncommon skin diseases. Critique cases that highlight diagnostic challenges. Apply morphological criteria to differential diagnoses of cutaneous lesions. Develop appropriate differential diagnoses for a wide spectrum of tumors and dermatoses. Annual Award Recipients 2013 Founders Award General Information Dirk M. Elston, MD, FAAD Director Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology New York, NY The Founders Award honors dermatopathologists who have made outstanding contributions to our field. This year s Founders Award honors Dr. Dirk Elston. He completed his dermatology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, followed by a fellowship under the tutelage of Dr. Wilma Bergfeld. After serving as chair of the dermatology department at Brooke Army Medical Center/Wilford Hall Medical Center and director of the dermatology department at Geisinger Medical Center, he moved on to his current position as director of the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology. Dr. Elston has served on numerous committees of the AMA, AAD, ABD, ASDP, Institute of Medicine and ABP, including the board of directors of the ABD, ASDP and AAD where he currently is the president. His prolific nature is astounding with more than 300 peer reviewed journal articles; he is the author/editor of eight textbooks, including the Requisites in Dermatology series, 53 textbook chapters and other electronic resources, such as mydermpath.com. In addition, he serves editorial roles for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Journal of Dermatopathology. He is a sought after and invited lecturer at national, international and regional meetings and courses. Along with these contributions Dr. Elston promotes the future of our specialty through strong mentorship of future leaders and his work on quality, billing and education. He is devoted and works tirelessly for the advancement of our field. The 2013 Founders Award will be presented to Dr. Elston at the President s Banquet Friday, Oct. 11. Annual Award Recipients 2013 Walter R. Nickel Award Lori Lowe, MD Professor of Dermatology and Pathology University of Michigan Ann Arbor, MI Dr. Lori Lowe is honored with the Walter R. Nickel Award for her contributions for the teaching of dermatopathology. She completed her residency in dermatology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, followed by a dermatopathology fellowship under Loren Golitz, MD, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver. Dr. Lowe is board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology. Dr. Lowe was a Senior Staff Physician in the Department of Dermatology and Director of Dermatopathology and Dermatopathology Resident Education at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, from 1991-1996. In 1996, she joined the faculty of the departments of pathology and dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, as assistant professor, where she was promoted to associate professor in 1998, and to professor in 2004. She served as the director of dermatopathology from 1997-2012 and has been the coordinator for dermatopathology resident education for the dermatology department for the past 17 years. Under her leadership, the dermatopathology service has undergone exponential growth while maintaining a reputation of impeccable patient care. She is an integral member of the University of Michigan Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program. She has authored or coauthored more than 100 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. She received the William B. Taylor Resident Teaching Award from the Department of Dermatology, University of Michigan in 1999 and 2005 for exemplary teaching. She has served on test committees at the ABD and ABP. She has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and Cancer for 10 years. Dr. Lowe has been responsible for the training of more than 400 residents and involved in the training of 12 fellows. The 2013 Walter R. Some of these subspecialties may fall under the purview of hospital-based or academic pathologists, making them even more inaccessible to outpatient dermatopathologists. Mucosal pathology, including ophthalmic, oral and genital, comprises one segment of this murky territory. The nail unit remains another special site, fraught with technical and diagnostic difficulty. Pediatric dermatopathology is also emerging as a newer niche, as knowledge advances rapidly in pediatric dermatology and we are called upon to help in special diagnostic situations. Progress in the molecular diagnosis of soft tissue tumors is revolutionizing the diagnosis and classification of those difficult neoplasms. On July 31, 2000, the Special Guest Lecture was officially named the Elston B. Helwig Memorial Lecture in tribute of Dr. Helwig. The lectureship is awarded in recognition of excellence in the realm of diagnostic dermatopathology and for significant contribution to the dermatopathology literature and the education of fellows and colleagues. Luis Requena, MD, PhD Chair, Fundación Jiménez Díaz Professor, Universidad Autónoma Madrid, Spain Insights in Cutaneous Neoplasms Dr. Elson Helwig originally described many of the cutaneous adnexal neoplasms, both benign and malignant ones. In recent years, advances in immunohistochemistry and molecular biology have contributed to a better understanding in differentiation of some of these neoplasms. Furthermore, multiple cutaneous adnexal tumors, often with hereditary transmission, frequently appear in patients with systemic diseases and are often associated with internal malignant neoplasms. In most of these diseases, the genetic defect has been identified and it may be investigated in the cutaneous lesions. Along with the diagnosis, genetic counseling should be provided to the patient and the family. The patient was chopping firewood and accidentally pierced his lower leg with a piece of wood prior to the onset of the mass. He recently completed chemotherapy for B-cell lymphoma. Case 2 A 54-year-old female with dorsal foot mass. Case 3 A 12-year-old girl with deep 10 cm mass of the buttock. Case 4 A 20-year-old male forest worker from Belize presents with an erythematous, ulcerated plaque on the left cheek. Case 5 A 34-year-old African American woman presented with numerous, yellow-brown papules distributed over the face. Case 6 A 50-year-old man from Surinam, South America, presents with keloid-like nodule on the lower extremity. Saturday, October 12 Case 7 A 58-year-old woman presents with an expanding plaque on the upper lateral thigh. Case 8 A 42-year-old woman presented with a firm papule on the volar surface of the right 5th finger. Histology revealed signet-ring cells, and immunostaining was consistent with fibrohistiocytic differentiation. Case 9 A 58-year-old man with a history of chronic sun damage presents to the office of a dermatologist for a baseline skin examination at the urging of his wife. A 0.9 x 0.7 cm indurated, erythematous macule with a halo is noted on the left upper back. A biopsy was performed. Actin, desmin, HMB45 and CD68 were negative. Case 10 A 27-year-old man with no significant past medical history presented with a vascular appearing nodule on the penile base.
