P A G E 3 ATTRACTING SUITABLE MEMBERS DISTRICT 9670 UNVEILS A NEW MEMBERSHIP AND MENTORING MANUAL TO ASSIST MEMBERS No. 2 AUGUST 2013 2014 P A G E 6 MEET YOUR LEADERS INTRODUCING THE G-TRAIN AND DISTRICT 9670 LEADERSHIP TEAM FOR 2013 2014 P A BILLY CAN BASH G E 8 AN OUTBACK BUSH ADVENTURE WITH NEW FRIENDS, NEW FACES, NEW PLACES AND GOOD FUN COMMUNITY, STRENGTH AND VALUES District digest We are on the way to another fantastic year in Rotary and possibly one of the biggest years District 9670 will ever see. District Governor Brian Atkins introduces his most valuable asset this month, his leadership team, that will direct all clubs with passion and skill and provide us with all the information we need to strengthen our brand. OFF TO A FLYING START! Well welcome each and every one of you to one of the biggest years District 9670 may ever see. For all those I have had the pleasure of meeting so far on my Club visits, I look forward to working with each and every one of you in the coming months to achieve our Rotary goals for 2013 2014. For those I am still yet to catch up with, I look forward to seeing you in the near future to introduce the vision and goals we have for District 9670 this year. To assist us all through 2013-2014, we have appointed a great team of Rotarians with passion and skills that will support your Club and strengthen Rotary in the community. The District Leadership team is here to support your Club and are our most valuable asset, our very own Rotarians. I am supported by the G- Train, District Governor Elect 2014-2015 Gerard McMillan (Singleton) and District Governor Nominee 2015-2016 Adrian Roach (Greenhills Maitland). We are fortunate to also have 11 talented Assistant Governors. I would like to personally thank all our team for their support. Check out this issue of the District Digest for more information on the Leadership Team. For the full list of personnel please refer to the District Organisational Chart on the new District Website at www.rotary9670.org.au 2013 2014 is going to bring District 9670 some exciting challenges as we work within international, regional and local projects to embrace the diversity of all aspects of our Rotary life. Alongside of our ongoing commitment to the global eradication of Polio, we have commenced a new chapter in the history of The Rotary Foundation with the launch of an entirely new grant structure we have come to know as Rotary Grants. This grant structure gives us the opportunity to challenge ourselves to do the most we can, with all our resources our selected areas of focus. This new grant structure also means Rotary International can direct funds back to our District and to the Clubs that are qualified to receive funds through Rotary Grants following approval of their nominated project. Our Foundation Chair PDG Alex McHarg is asking clubs to apply now for grants for their nominated projects. As pointed out last month in my address, 2013-2014 will focus on the need to strengthen our brand who and what we are, why we do it and why it really matters. To this end, we have an exciting new Zone 8 National Public Relation Campaign commencing shortly titled Conversations to Actions. This will be a great advantage to our Clubs as we search out prospective new members to assist us in our goals. The comprehensive media campaign will include radio, television and print media ads in rural and city areas and will be complemented by a free community service advertising program which can be personalised for each Club. The media campaign will encourage members of the public to come and join the conversation@ Rotary. The campaign has now received final Rotary International approval and looks like an exciting step forward. This month we also unveil the new membership and mentoring manual to assist new Rotarians with integrating into their new clubs. Yours in Rotary service Brian Atkins

90 years and still strong... Great supporters of the Newcastle community, Bob Urry, Club Newsletter Editor for the Rotary Club of Newcastle fills us in on how the Rotary Club of Newcastle was founded and their plans to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of Australia s fourth oldest Rotary Club.. Following the formation of the Rotary Club of Sydney in 1921, there was a delegation of members who visited Newcastle to look at the possibility of a Rotary Club in Newcastle. An inaugural meeting was held on 23 September 1923 and the Rotary Club of Newcastle was chartered on 19 December 1923. The Charter President was General John Paton and there were 20 charter members. The Rotary Club of Newcastle became the fourth Rotary Club in Australia. The three other clubs were in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. On 23 September 2013 the Rotary Club of Newcastle will celebrate 90 years of service to the Newcastle Community with an informal evening at the site of the George Hotel, 6 Watt Street, Newcastle, where the Inaugural Meeting was held. Our Guest Speaker for the evening will be The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councilor Jeff McCloy. During the past 90 years the Rotary Club of Newcastle has been the supporter of several organisations. Some of these organisations are Wheeling & Able, Hunter Medical Research Institute, Jenny s Place, Ronald McDonald House, Hunter Children s Research Foundation, Alzheimer s Association, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, SIDS and Kids and Hunter Melanoma Association. Over the years the Rotary Club of Newcastle have hosted Pride of Workmanship and Community Service Awards where staff of local organisations as well members of the local Police, Fire and Ambulance services are recognised for their services.
