St Jseph the Wrker Medical & Accidents plicy (as part f the Health and Safety plicy) This plicy shuld be seen in terms f an verview plicy. It cvers such a wide area that all f the issues cannt be cvered in a single plicy. Here we utline the general areas cvered and make reference t additinal specific plicies. Areas cvered: General illness and Reprting Medicines and Medicatin Medical Recrds, including specific cnditins/needs Asthma Accidents and Reprting First Aid General illness and Reprting - All children will bviusly becme ill at smetime during the year. It is expected that parents will ntify schl at the earliest pprtunity f pupils sickness. Hwever, all parents must send int schl, written cnfirmatin f the reasn fr absence. Registers will be mnitred bth fr reccurrence f illness absence f specific children r the high incidence f a cmmn illness. There is a chart in the schl Office indicating the exclusin times fr certain illnesses. Staff must be aware f ntifiable illness t the SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE. Frm time t time the SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE may ntify schls f widespread incidents f an illness that may require additinal recrding r preventative measures - (e.g. swine flu). Pupils wh have been sick in schl, require 48 hrs clear befre returning t schl (SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE advice). Parents are asked t infrm schl f any cases f head lice, wrms etc. Letters will then be sent ut t parents f pupils in that class asking them t check their child. On ccasins this letter will be sent ut t the whle schl. Children can return t schl nce they have received treatment. Medicines and Medicatin - Administratin: It must be remembered that schls are under n legal bligatin t administer medicines, althugh this must be balanced against the bvius need f care fr the pupils. Only the ffice staff and EYFS first Aided Trained staff can administer medicines and d s vluntarily. This sectin refers t thse areas f medicatin, that relate t nrmal childhd illness and nt specific cnditins which are dealt with later. Mst medicines taken by children can be administered three times a day and as such can be given as sn as the child arrives hme frm schl. Therefre, these cmmnly used medicines will nt be given in schl. In the main we will give antibitics, which need t be taken at regular times, befre meals and wuld therwise stp children attending. Other regular medicatin will be issued fr sme children-but nly under the fllwing cnditins: Nn-prescriptin medicines - We will nly administer medicine that has been prescribed by a dctr, dentist r nurse. We will nly stre medicine that is clearly labelled with the riginal prescribed dispensing label, which shuld include: Name f medicatin Child s name Dsage

Dsage frequency Date f dispensing Strage requirements (if imprtant) Expiry date (if available) Medicines must nly be brught t schl and cllected by adults. All medicines must be clearly labelled. medicines will remain in the schl Office. Parents/Guardians must cmplete and sign a medical card befre medicines can be administered. (see Appendix 1) There is a recrding sheet, kept in the Office, t mnitr children n repeated, daily medicatin. (see Appendix 2) If there is a dispute abut whether a medicine shuld be given, schl may request a dctr s letter. Certain medicatin wuld never be given as nrmal practice (e.g injectins r anal suppsitries). This wuld require advice and supprt frm the SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE and Schl nurse service See belw fr ther specific medicatin Medical Recrds and Cnditins - All children s medical infrmatin is requested n the annual data checking sheets issued t parents. This, in turn, is used t update pupils recrds n the SIMs system. This infrmatin is used t generate medical registers. Registers used are: 1. Medical cnditins register 2. Dietary needs registers Cpies f these are kept in the Safeguarding file in the Office. A cpy f the Dietary needs register is given t the Ck. Cpies f the medical Cnditins Register are given t staff t include in their Blue Assessment file. Annual cnsent frms are signed by parents, giving permissin t trained members f staff, t act n their behalf, if medicatin needs t be administered, r hspital frms signed, during schl trips. Smetimes, parent helpers may be respnsible fr small grups during schl trips. Staff shuld ensure that such parents are aware f any children in their grup, wh has a medical cnditin. Alternatively, staff may wish t keep these children in their grup. Fr sme children, their medical cnditin falls beynd the remit f this general plicy. Children with sme specific allergies (such as nut allergies)-may require the use f an EPI PEN. These will require additinal treatments. Epi pens shuld be kept in a marked cupbard in class, in clearly marked cases. Pens must be taken with children, during any trips ff schl premises. All staff must underg annual training prvided by the schl nurse service. Staff must als familiarise themselves with the Anaphylaxis Training pack. These children, and sme thers with heart cnditins, may need t be red flagged. This system prvides immediate respnse frm the Ambulance Service. T initiate this, the schl Office will liaise with the schl Nurse Team, befre cmpleting a Red Flag request frm. Children wh are red flagged, have specific cnditins, r dietary needs are phtgraphed anntated and made int display ntices which are psted in the staff rm and schl Office. Supply staff must be made aware f any particular issues with children under their care they are given a handbk n arrival. Asthma - This is a very cmmn cnditin fr children. An Asthma register is generated each year and distributed t staff. It is updated each September, based n parental returns. Schl s intentin is that all pupils shuld be taught and encuraged t self-administer, althugh yunger children may require assistance. Inhalers shuld be named and kept accessible in class. Inhalers must be taken n trips, swimming lessns and be readily available fr sprts activities. Fr mre infrmatin refer t the schl s ASTHMA POLICY.
