Jim Donovan Donna Occhipinti Harry Winberg Program Today s program was presented by Michelle Shauger speaking on Education Advancement in Ghana through the Schoerke Foundation. The foundation operates on the belief that every child deserves an education to prepare them for positive contributions to their community. Primary Project The project is the Heritage Academy in the Central district of Ghana. The Academy is the result of a sustained effort by Kwasi Koomson who was born in a village called Esiam which is 60 miles from the capitol Accra. He achieved a Masters degree from Villanova University. He and his wife went back to Ghana and started the school in a church. This was followed by purchasing another building as well. The mission of the school is to provide scholarships for students, buses, employees and lunch. There is no funding through the Ghana government and no corporate donations All donations come from the general public. All students are on scholarship and 3 times per year, people go to teach at this school. The board of directors is all staffed through volunteering. The big vision is to come up with a plan to create business to fund itself. In a country where punishment can be harsh, there is no corporal punishment in the school (caning of students). The school contains K-12 education and has grown from 32 students to 1350. The full scholarship per student is $70.00 per year. The current pass rate is 100%. Subjects beyond standard ones are encouraged. Some of these include creative writing geography, entrepreneurship, ethics, music and art. A Rotary Minute The following Rotary History bites are from the book presented to Rotarians attending the 2013 Rotary Institute for Learning. Title of the book is, A century of service by David C. Forward. This will be ongoing. Community Service The first members of Rotary were attracted to it for fellowship and mutual business boosting. Volunteerism was not a common idea in the early 20 th century. In 1905, the Rotary had two objectives: The promotion of the business interests of its members and The promotion of good fellowship and other characteristic common to social clubs. Don Carter joined the Chicago Rotary in December of 1905. He told others in the club that the club had great possibilities if it could do something to benefit people besides its own members. Carter was asked to draft and propose such an amendment. He drafted a proposed change to the Rotary Club Constitution which was adopted at a club meeting shortly afterward. The addition was: The advancement of the best interests of Chicago and the spreading of the spirit of civic pride and loyalty among its citizens. This was adopted by all Rotary clubs and changed the focus of the movement. The first deed to support the words took place when a local preacher s horse died and the man was too poor to buy another. The Chicago club responded by buying him another horse. A few weeks later, Paul Harris heard a discussion concerning the need for public restrooms in downtown Chicago. Paul proposed that the Rotary club construct comfort stations or restrooms for men and women outside the new City Hall. The club endorsed the idea. The community service idea became the very soul of Rotary. A spirit of voluntary service swept across America through the influence of business and professional men in Rotary clubs. In 1918, the Rotary Club of Los Angeles founded Settlement House as a community service project. This place provided outreach to immigrants in one of the city s poorest neighborhoods. Today, Rotary has evolved into a global organization partnering in multi-million dollar projects with influential organization such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF. However, the vast majority of Rotarians and non-rotarians will identify the organization s work with something in the local community. Rotary s century of community service has not been for personal gain or even for public recognition. It is in response to the needs of the communities where Rotarians live, raise their families and earn their living. More next week Upcoming community events Dining for dogs and cats too! Credo type articles Please send future CREDO inputs directly to Dana Jerrard at djerrard@vicks.biz From August 2014 Rotarian Polio s retreat: reuisiting the last generation of victims in Southeast Asia (Megan Ferringer) Photo journalist Allison Kwesell walked through the streets of an Indian village to see how one of the last victims of polio was doing. She had visited 4 years earlier when the little boy was two years old. She finds that Samir, now six years old, is able to run and play with the rest of the kids in his village on the outskirts of Moradabad. This last March, the World Health Organization announced that its Southeast Asia region is officially polio-free. The certification came from India s successful fight against polio. It celebrated three years without polio in January. This concluded a 36 year battle that sent millions of health workers down alleys, up mountains, and across deserts to reach every child in this huge country. Doctors feel that Samir s case was less severe than it could have been because earlier vaccinations against polio helped him build partial immunity.

From RI District 7150 site on : http://www.clubrunner.ca/7150 Pedaling for a Purpose Keith Harris is pedaling for a purpose. At the tender age of 50, he has set out on an eight-week, 4,400 mile bike ride across the U.S. to raise $25, 000 for The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is one of the most underrated charitable organizations in the world. Nearly all of the money raised goes to the humanitarian and community service projects of Rotary and its affiliated clubs. Harris has been a Rotary member for 18 years. He served as president for the Rotary Club of Ipswich, Washington, and as district Rotary Foundation Chair for seven years. He says Rotary has become a way of life for him and his wife Christina, who is also a member. Rotary is indeed a body of many parts, says Harris. It allows us to reach out through the headlines and interact with the people we otherwise would only hear or read about. He ll have plenty of interactions during the trip as he is planning to occasionally stay with other Rotary members along the way, as well as taking advantage of the hospitality of the WarmShowers.org community for cyclists. Keith will be traveling solo without a van or entourage, so he has little needs. However, he may need a warm smile, warm shower, a warm bed, and a warm meal. Keith will be traveling through New York during the middle of the week of August 5 th through the 9 th. He will enter New York via Westfield, then Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Little Falls and Albany along the Erie Canal. 2014-2015 Veterans Achievement Award During the 2014-15 Rotary year, District 7150 will once again present Veterans Achievement Awards to club projects serving the veteran population Award Criteria: Only club projects that meet the award criteria will be considered for this recognition. The project must: Address a significant problem or need of the Veteran Populations in the local community Be viable and sustainable within the Rotary community beyond the year initiated Involve most or all the club members in personal rather than merely monetary service Be commensurate with the size of the club and the resources available Enhance the image of Rotary in the community Be currently active or be reaching a conclusion during this Rotary year. Award Content: Selected Rotary Clubs will receive 1000 recognition points from the District Governor, to be allocated for Paul Harris Fellow recognition to the individual of the club s choosing.. Suggested Nomination Procedure: The District Governor will announce the award, criteria for selection, and deadline for entries to be received in the District newsletter and on the District Web site, and the District Secretary will send Nomination forms to all club presidents and secretaries and be available through a web link on the District Home page.

Completed Nomination Application Forms must be received no later than 15 March The district governor will appoint and announce a district selection committee to evaluate all entries. The governor will be an ex officio member of this committee. The district selection committee will meet by 1 April and choose projects as candidates for the award, forwarding these to the governor. From the projects proposed by the district selection committee, the governor will select one (1) project. Awards will be announced at the District Conference in April 26, 2015.
