ORIENTATION NEWSLETTER June 2012 Welcome to the King s College Community! You are about to enter a new community so get ready to plant your roots here at King s College! The Orientation staff has been harvesting ideas to make this experience exciting and memorable. The theme of this year s Orientation, Growing Together, will prepare you to branch out as an individual and work together to accomplish your goals. Please note that the orientation program is mandatory for all first-year students. Transfer students are only required to attend Sunday s program, but are welcome to join in all of the Orientation events. This newsletter serves as a guide and brief overview of the activities taking place during the week of Orientation. The program is designed as a way for you to become better acquainted with life on campus as well as introduce you to staff, faculty, administrators, and fellow students that make up the King s College community. King s College foundations are deeply rooted in community service so be prepared to lend a hand with activities such as CitySERVE! Each night you will have a chance to relax, meet new friends, and join in the fun at various social events! Your seeds will be planted on August 23rd with resident move-in and commuter check-in. COMMUTER CHECK-IN All first-year commuter students can check-in and pick up their orientation packet and college I.D. starting at 11:00am on Thursday, August 23rd in the Toole Lobby located on the 1st floor in the Sheehy- Farmer Campus Center. There will be current commuters on hand to answer your questions. Commuter life is an important component of King s College. King s provides students with many opportunities to get involved with the campus. The Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center is a great place for commuters to relax and meet fellow commuters during their free time on campus. The lower level features Connerton s Café, a game room, a computer lounge, a large screen TV and lounge area, and commuters lockers. Located on the main level are the offices of Campus Activities, College Diversity, and Residence Life. In addition, the Media Center, Widmann Art Gallery, commuter and off-campus mailboxes, and a lounge area are also located on this level. The Office of Campus Activities provides a place for commuters to express their opinions and their ideas. The office works under an open door policy to encourage students to use the services provided. Here students can feel free to seek information, find directions, and address any concerns. CAMPUS LOCKERS Commuters can rent lockers for the semester. Lockers are located in the lower level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center. Locker rentals are $3.00 and are available in the Campus Activities Office located on the main level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center. PIT STOP Pit Stops are held monthly in the Campus Activities Suite. Featured at the Pit Stops are handouts on student services, information on upcoming events, monthly calendars, as well as refreshments. Commuter students can stop in to grab a quick snack, a calendar, talk with the staff, and be on the go again! Watch for the checkered flags around the campus! COMMUTER LIFE ASSOCIATION The Commuter Life Association meets throughout the semester to discuss a variety of issues that affect commuters. All commuters are encouraged to become involved in the Association s activities. If interested, stop by the Office of Campus Activities or call (570) 208-5966. Official notices and correspondence along with information on college activities are sent to students through campus mailboxes and college email. Students are accountable for all information sent to their campus mailbox and email account. It is expected that students check their campus mail and email accounts at least three times per week. Commuter student mailboxes are located on the main level of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center. 4
MOVE-IN Resident students may begin moving into their residence halls at: 8:00am - 9:00am Students who live within a 0-45 mile radius 9:00am - 12:30pm Students who live outside a 45 mile radius Orientation Assistants will be available to assist you in your move until 12:45pm. HOLY CROSS RESIDENTS From North Main Street turn onto West Union Street and make a right onto North Franklin Street. King s Security and Wilkes-Barre Police will be assisting with traffic control. Once you arrive, the orientation staff will help you unload your car and give you directions to a designated parking lot. One person must stay with your car and move it to the parking lot so traffic does not block the street. ESSEFF HALL RESIDENTS Park to unload at the meter slots on North Main Street in front of your residence hall. The orientation staff will help unload your car and give you directions to a designated parking lot where you can leave your car for the rest of the day. HOUSING CONTRACT All first year and sophomore students under the age of twenty-one are required to live in college operated housing or in the home of their parent or guardian. Commuting students must reside in the home of their parent or legal guardian within 45 miles of campus. If you plan to live on campus, you should have already received, completed, and returned your housing contract and $200 damage deposit. If you have not returned this contract, please do so immediately. If you have not received a contract, or if you have any questions about housing, contact the Office of Residence Life at (570) 208-5856. LAUNDRY MACHINES The laundry machines are operated with King s Cash, which is deposited onto your student ID card. King s Cash deposits can be made one of three ways: through the Business Office (located on the 1st floor of the Administration Building or at 570-208-5831), online at https://kingscash.blackboard.com/ webapps/portal/frameset.jsp, or via the PHIL station (located on the 1st floor of the Sheehy-Farmer Campus Center). KING S CASH A Declining Balance Account *Pre-paid, declining balance card that is used like a debit card at any on campus restaurant and in our convenience store, Monarch Mart. *Make deposits on campus or on-line! *Use for campus laundry and parking. *More economical than cash! A 10% discount is given on every purchase made in Marketplace and all other campus restaurants. *Use at our off-campus participating merchants like Sheetz, Rodano s, Vesuvios, CVS, and more! SECURITY You should have received a letter from the King s College Security Services concerning parking. Included in the mailing will be a parking application for vehicle registration. Please make sure you fill out the application completely. Should you have any further questions or concerns about having a vehicle on campus, please feel free to contact the King s College Security Department at (570) 208-5926, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm. STUDENT HEALTH CENTER Resident Students: Resident students must submit proof of meningitis vaccination and proof of health insurance to move into the residence halls. Resident students who have not received the meningitis vaccine and/or wish to waive the vaccine must complete and return the Meningitis Vaccine Waiver Form in order to receive their residence hall room key. The proof of health insurance requirement cannot be waived. Resident students who do not complete and submit a current physical exam (completed within one year of matriculation) will not be eligible to receive treatment in the student health center. Commuter Students: Commuter and off-campus students are required to submit immunization records. Commuter and off -campus students are not required to submit a physical exam, however, students who do not complete and submit a current physical exam (completed within one year of matriculation) will not be eligible to receive treatment in the student health center. REGISTRAR Class schedules and bookstore information will be sent to you from the Registrar s Office in a mailing the week of August 13th. All students are required to have an accurate address and telephone number on file with the College through the Registrar s Office. Students are required to notify the Registrar within seven days of any change in address and/or telephone number. If you do not want your directory information (name, address, telephone) released to anyone, you must notify your Academic Advisor during your advisement meeting. CAMPUS MAILBOX Resident and Commuter students will be getting their mailbox number and combination via your King s email account. Your King s email account will be available during Orientation at the Technology Session on Friday. If you have any questions regarding your mailbox, contact the Registrar s office at (570) 208-5870. 6
INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SERVICES - IITS Student network and E-mail Accounts will be available when you arrive on campus in August. On Friday, during orientation at the Technology Session, you will receive directions for logging on to your account. All lab computers use the latest Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Suite software in addition to network access for additional software and applications. Macintosh computers are available in selected discipline specific labs. All labs are supported by a high speed Ethernet network. The network provides every student with access to the Internet, shared and private storage for data files, software, library research resources, instructional support resources, on-line student information/services and Internet2. Resident students must provide their own Ethernet cable. Wireless Computing is available on campus in select areas. If you are looking to take advantage of wireless, we offer 802.11 b/g service. More information is available at http://departments.kings.edu/learninghub/resources. htm. Students are required to log on to the networked systems in all PC labs. We realize that as you arrive on campus this fall you will have many things to accomplish in order to settle in and feel at home on the campus. With this in mind, we have made a commitment to have your log on and password in place when you arrive. You will be asked to change your password the first time you login (this may be done at an on-campus computer or on the web). You will also be asked to enroll in Password Station, a self help application that will assist you resetting your password in the event you forget your password in the future. By logging on to the system you agree to accept all the conditions and responsibilities associated with this account. Acceptable/Unacceptable Use policies may be found in the Student Handbook or via the web at http:.. my.kings.edu/.
