Statement of Purpose Governor Terry Branstad recently announced an ambitious initiative to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016. This initiative rallies both the private and public sector to improve the overall health and happiness of Iowans. Nurse practitioners will want to take an active role in making this a reality for themselves and the patients and families they care for. We are pleased to announce that Gov. Branstad has accepted our invitation to keynote the annual conference to share his enthusiasm for this goal and identify ways nurse practitioners can take an active lead. In addition, the conference content includes a variety of topics of interest to the PNP in a variety of settings. Topics include an overview to metabolic and common genetic disorders, fluid and electrolyte management, congenital chest wall deformities, new guidelines for cholesterol screening in children, seizure evaluation and management, the management of uncomplicated sports-related concussion and related return to play guidelines, pharmacological management of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and an in-depth look at anemia. A variety of exhibits and displays, a wine and cheese reception and a fun walk round out the events at this year s annual conference. Mark your calendar now to attend! Objectives Upon completion of this offering, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss Iowa s Healthiest State Initiative and the nurse practitioner s role in supporting children and their families in this project. 2. Discuss legislative bills and other issues affecting nurse practitioner practice in Iowa and the nation. 3. Describe the role of PI CHI in strengthening care for Iowa children and adolescents. 4. Identify the symptoms, causes and treatments for common metabolic disorders in children. 5. Identify genetic disorders that commonly present in pediatric practice. 6.
