NEW GENERATIONS MONTH DISTRICT HAPPENINGS Governor David s letter to the District September is New Generations Month and I am astounded at the number and variety of Youth Projects undertaken by Clubs across our District. It is quite obvious that Rotarians place a very heavy emphasis on providing encouragement, assistance and leadership to younger members of our society and for good reason. We are dealing with the future leaders of DG David Piper and Aileen our society and it behoves us to pass on all the skills we have acquired in a lifetime in the school of Hard Knocks. There is no need for our youth to waste their energy making the same mistakes we made; let s make the effort so that they can leapfrog ahead on our accumulated knowledge. Reporting to the Board, Mary s role is to provide leadership to the organisation (including 132 staff and 5,500 volunteers) as it transitions from a business unit of the Department of Justice to a more independent Statutory Authority. VICSES day to day purpose is to partner with the community to provide timely and effective emergency services. Prior to VICSES Mary worked in senior management positions in the health and aged care sector and Local Government. Over the past 15 years or so Mary has held positions of leadership in a range of organisations and industries and has been responsible for implementing substantial change in both culture and operational matters within organisations. Workplace giving allows employees and employers to connect more easily with charities that have deductible gift recipient (DGR) status. Simple, cost effective and tax efficient, workplace giving runs through the payroll system and allows an employee to nominate the amount they would like to donate each pay. This amount is then deducted from the employee s wage and sent straight to the nominated charity. By participating in workplace giving, employees are able to donate through a transparent and trustworthy channel their employer. It s also easier come tax time; no more worrying about collecting receipts or waiting until the end of the financial year to claim a deduction. For employers, offering a workplace giving program helps foster employee morale and strengthen community ties. And don t forget that by supporting Australian Rotary Health you are helping to solve important issues that affect your community. From mental health to cancer research, Australian Rotary Health s broad vision helps improve the quality of life for people who are least able to assist themselves. Position Vacant DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2013/14 Clubs are invited to nominate suitably qualified Rotarians as District Governor 2013/14. The nomination needs to be supported by a resolution at a regular meeting of a club. The eligibility requirements for a District Governor are set out in the Rotary International By-Laws are as follows: Be a member in good standing of a functioning club in the district. Have full qualifications for such membership in the strict application of the provisions therefore, and the integrity of the Rotarian s classification must be without question. Have served as president of a club for a full term, or be a charter club president who has served a term from the date of the charter to 30 June, provided that this period is for at least six months. Demonstrate a willingness, commitment, and ability (physically and otherwise) to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the office of governor as provided in the RI Bylaws (Section 15.090). Demonstrate knowledge of the qualifications, duties, and responsibilities of governor as prescribed in the RI Bylaws, and submit to RI, through its general secretary, a signed statement acknowledging a clear understanding of them; this statement shall also confirm that the Rotarian is qualified for the office of governor and is willing and able to assume the duties and responsibilities of the office and to perform them faithfully. Below is some information regarding the necessary requirements of applicants. Team leader A team leader must: be an experienced Rotarian. have the backing of their club. must apply on the official form (RI website) before Friday September 24. have a good understanding of The Rotary Foundation. be available for interview on Sunday October 3. if successful, must be available for considerable preparation. must be available over the Sat and Sun October 30 and 31 to partake in the selection of the team members. must attend the District conference. must be available to go to Finland for almost the whole month of April 2011. must be available on return to speak to Rotary clubs and other groups about the experience. Team member A team member must: be between the ages of 25 and 40 years. be employed full time in a recognised job. apply on an official form (RI website) by October 15. be sponsored by a Rotary club. be available as for the team leader, except for the first interview session. 6 NYSF Report August 2010 I am pleased to be able to report that the District Interviews for students who applied for the NYSF January 2011 intake have been completed. There were 59 applicants from across the District of which Clubs agreed to sponsor 33 students. One student withdrew before the Interview process began. 14 Students were interviewed on Sunday 8 August at Balcombe College, Mt Martha and 18 at Centenary House, Traralgon, on Sunday 15 August. The were 18 places available to our District. The Interview panel selected 18 very passionate students and 2 emergencies all of whom presented well, to represent District 9820. Of the 20 students, 9 are boys and 11 girls, 9 are from the western (city) end of the District and 11 from rural areas, 10 attend Public and 10 attend Private schools. As a result the Interview panel is satisfied with the balance achieved. Sponsoring Clubs will have received an invoice from NYSF which is due for payment within 30 days of the invoice date. I suggest that Clubs pay the full cost and collect the students share from the family. The next NYSF commitment is the Orientation Day, at which attendance is obligatory for the selected students. I extend an invitation to any interested Rotarian to join us on that day at Monash Churchill but particularly ask that a representative from all sponsoring Clubs make the effort to attend. Please confirm your attendance with me so that you may be included in the numbers for the excellent BBQ that finalises the day which is provided by the Hazelwood club. Just ten weeks after launching, Disaster Aid Australia together with international partners Canada and USA which form Disaster Aid International (DAI) has pledged Family Survival Packs to assist survivors in the devastating floods of Pakistan. 100 Family Survival Packs are being flown into Pakistan with another two containers leaving next week. Our international Disaster Aid Response Teams (DARTs) consisting of an Aussie, Canadian, American and Brit who are all highly experienced and have assisted in disasters, many times before, leave next week to deliver the aid. According to the United Nations, 6 million survivors urgently require aid in the form of shelter, food and clean water. This catastrophic flooding is bigger than Haiti, the China earthquake and the Burma cyclones. The death toll has risen to 1600 and reports reveal that up to 14 million or 8 percent of the population have been disrupted or affected. Disaster Aid Australia has another 1000 Family Survival Packs ready to deploy but we urgently need your assistance with donations to allow further assistance into Pakistan. Working with two of the largest international humanitarian charities, we are committed to ensuring that these survivors have our help in the form of our Family Survival Packs and clean water systems through our partner the SkyJuice Foundation.
