Purpose of the Role To provide skilled assistance to the Anaesthetist / Intensivist for the safe administration of anaesthesia or sedation. To provide skilled resuscitation assistance throughout the DHB. Ensure all the equipment pertaining to the administration of anaesthesia is correctly maintained, checked, and is available for use. To form part of the perioperative team in each theatre Key Specific Expectations Be registered as an anaesthetic technician by the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand (MSC) and maintain a current practicing certificate. Provide skilled anaesthetic assistance with all facets of anaesthesia, wherever anaesthesia or sedation is performed, as specified in document PS8 1998(ANZCA) Preparation of appropriate anaesthetic equipment for the procedure being performed. e.g. IV lines, regional anaesthesia, Invasive monitoring, warming devices, infusions etc. Use good time management skills to provide for timely management of theatre resources. Documentation of the correct equipment checking procedures having been carried out Preparing the patient for anaesthesia or sedation including assisting with, or performing, the task of placing intra-vascular or intraarterial cannulae. Care and maintenance of all Anaesthetic equipment, arranging specialist servicing as required Cleaning and reinstatement of anaesthetic equipment and stock. Collecting patients as they arrive in the theatre suite, transporting to operating room while ensuring that all legal documentation of patient identification and consent is correct. Actively participating in the WHO surgical safety check list process. Entering data into patient information management system and theatre record book. Prepare and hand over patients to the care of others Assisting with patient positioning for surgical procedures. Assisting medical and nursing staff with emergency patient management and transport, including emergency department, imaging, inter-hospital transfer and other areas as required. Communicates with medical, technical an nursing teams effectively enabling efficient use of resources and staff Provide Extended Practice skills as appropriate and within extended scopes of practice as dictated by the MSC. Provide cannulation assistance as required by the Charge Technician or CD anaesthesia. Seeks feedback on own performance, then acts on it. Communicates clearly/succinctly in appropriate style and presents information effectively in various situations Blood sampling Handling specimens Clinical Practice Delegates appropriately to skill mix and acuity Maintains clinical practice to be able to provide clinical assistance in care delivery, especially in emergencies Remains current in the use of all specialist equipment including the cell saver and TEG Ensures that appropriate equipment is available and maintained to allow for appropriate monitoring and care delivery Education Complete WDHB IV medication test Maintain annual updates as required by WDHB Maintain current certification for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) level 6 or above. Maintain personal education and keep Portfolio up to date in accordance with requirements for ongoing professional development as dictated by the MSC to maintain professional registration. PERSON SPECIFICATION Minimum Qualification Be currently registered as an in New Zealand. Have gained the Certificate of Proficiency (issued by the New Zealand society of Anaesthetists) if qualified prior to February 1993. If qualified post February 1993 have gained Certification with the Auckland Institute of Technology n conjunction with hospital training. The ODA and ODP Level III Training is recognized in New Zealand as equivalent training. Preferred Degree in Science field. Experience Minimum required experience as determined by Anaesthetic technicians board and ANZCA Contemporary Anaesthetic technology knowledge and skills Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and committed to the principles. Demonstrated ability to share clinical knowledge with others. Have experience is all surgical specialties in a theatre environment.
