Phase 1- Prevention / Mitigation Mitigation... encourages long-term reduction of hazard vulnerability. -- FEMA, 2002 Mitigation/Prevention addresses what schools can do to reduce exposure to risks and hazards and lessen the potential impact of an emergency situation. Mitigation efforts can occur both before and after emergencies or disasters. 3

Facilities / Mitigation Mitigation assesses and addresses the safety and integrity of the following types of hazards to minimize or prevent adverse impacts: Examples of securing nonstructural hazards would be using straps, latches, Velcro, brackets, are some of the ways to secure a wide range of objects to avoid loss, damage and injury during an earthquake. Secured water heater 4

Facilities Mitigation / Security SECURITY - functioning locks, controlled access to the school, metal detectors 5

Physical Threat Assessments Threat assessment considers potential hazards in school neighborhood such as high voltage power lines; facilities containing toxic or chemically reactive materials; transportation routes of trucks and trains carrying hazardous materials; underground gas and oil pipelines and tanks. 6

School Environment Determine who is responsible for overseeing violence prevention strategies in the school, and disseminate information to staff regarding the early detection of potentially dangerous behaviors. http://www.flickr.com/ 7
