Volume I, Issue 3 Academic News Page 2 Professional Services, Performances, and Recognition Sara Ash Her book, Urban Wildlife Management, co-authored with Dr. Clark Adams and Dr. Kiernan Lindsey, was selected for inclusion in CHOICE Magazine s Outstanding Academic Title List. This list includes just over 9 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less than 3 percent selected from 25,000 titles. Selection is based on excellence in scholarship and presentation, significance of contribution to their field, and important treatment of their subject. Mark Bay Received a grant of over $1000 to attend the annual meeting of the Innovative Users' Group to learn how to better operate the library's cataloging computer system. The meeting is May 14-17, 2007, in San Jose, California. Richard Byrd Performed with the Faculty Jazz Combo in a successful University of the Cumberlands jazz clinic organized by professor David Threlkeld for area high school musicians and band directors. Garnet Chrisman With Norma Patrick, took three students, Toccara Montgomery, Amber Thacker and Ali Wolfe, to the Kentucky Association of Teacher Educators Conference in Georgetown, Kentucky in October. The students presented a session entitled "Emergency Treatment for Technology Trauma. The students demonstrated skills and had the audience participate in effective teaching strategies that can be implemented quickly. Kirby Clark Preached twice at Corbin Presbyterian Church, and was recertified as an Interim Minister by the Center for Congregational Health. James Corcoran Attended the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Austin, Texas, November 8-12. He was in attendance as PAS Kentucky Chapter President. Performed with the Faculty Jazz Combo in a successful jazz clinic organized by professor David Threlkeld for area high school musicians and band directors held on the Cumberlands campus. Instructed the Harlan County Drumline on September 13-15. Laura Dennis-Bay Paper on author Marie Cardinal accepted for presentation at the Annual Conference of the Kentucky Philological Association to be held at Union College and Pine Mountain SRP 2-3 March 2007. Paper on film in the classroom accepted for the North American Christian Foreign Language Association conference to be held at Asbury College 29-31 March 2007. Will also chair a session, Accommodating disabled students in the foreign language classroom, at the NACFLA conference at Asbury College. Currently taking a class on Spanish film at the University of Kentucky.

Sean Greene th Traveled to Cookeville, Tennessee to perform on a program honoring the 40 Anniversary of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. Performed with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Appalachian Ballet in performances of Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet in December. One of his original compositions was performed in Washington, DC at the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Tuba Euphonium Conference in January. Taught and performed with the Faculty Jazz Combo (Richard Byrd, David Threlkeld, James Corcoran and Todd Spangler) in a successful jazz clinic organized by professor David Threlkeld for area high school musicians and band directors held on the Cumberlands campus on January 16. Will travel to Louisville in February to assist with the Kentucky Inter-Collegiate Band as part of the KMEA In-Service.

The University of the Cumberlands Tuba Euphonium Ensemble has also been invited to perform at this conference. Robert Hancock Bruce Hicks Panelist on Kentucky Tonight, on Kentucky Educational Television (KET) program, January 15. Discussed Iraq with host Bill Goodman and panel members Carey Cavanaugh, John Stempel, and Harry Mason of the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce of the University of Kentucky. Jay Kirchner Performed as accompanist with the Chamber choir for the Christmas Madrigals this past Christmas season. Presented two faculty forums and one student symposium, Effects of Childbearing and Careers, on January 24 and 25, 2007. Bret Kuss Lisa Lyford Jim Manning Oversaw two competitions submarines and the mousetrap car. Larry Newquist Evaluated the Physics team demonstrations and announced the winners at the final presentation. Sara June Osborne Conducted a faculty symposium Cultural Issues and International Students on Tuesday, January 30. Conducted two programs for ARC tutors and faculty. On February 2, she addressed Reading and Writing Issues and on February 9 she will discuss Listening Comprehension Issues. Volume I, Issue 3 Academic News Page 6 Departmental Achievements Biology, Chemistry, Math and Physics Departments # On completion of another successful Science Olympiad. Health, Movement, and Leisure Studies Department # Awarded the 2007 Service Award from the Kentucky Association for Milk, Food and Sanitarians. History and Political Science # Department of History and Political Science student, Mary Osborne, was awarded the 2006 Undergraduate Essay Prize in a national competition sponsored by the United States Branch of the Western Front Association and Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honor society. The prize was awarded for a paper written for Dr. Wake s methods class. Music Department # The instrumental music faculty hosted the Eighth Annual UC High School Jazz Ensemble Clinic on January 16th. This clinic is designed for both high school students and band directors. The student sessions included rehearsals and instrumental master classes and the directors sessions included a handson jazz keyboard clinic, a session on teaching drum set and a reading session of new compositions for young jazz ensembles. Students and directors from five area schools participated in this years event.
