Teacher Spotlight Sarah Davis Sarah Davis is a teacher in our Exceptional Child (EC) Program. She was named 2017-18 Teacher of the Year by her Butler peers for her dedication to our students. She is expecting her first baby in October! Where were you born? Rialto, California Where did you go to school? My bachelor s degree is in sociology from the University of California Santa Barbara. I received my masters degree in teaching from UNC Charlotte and am also National Board Certified. How long have you been a teacher? I ve been a special education teacher for eight years in Charlotte. Previously, I was an EC teacher at Harding for three years. This is my fifth year at Butler! Why did you want to be a teacher? I had an amazing high school experience. My teachers were so wonderful, and I really looked up to them. That s why I wanted to teach high school. How did you end up in Charlotte? I joined the Teach for America Program while finishing up my bachelor s degree. In Teach for America they place you in the area they think would be the best fit. They placed me as an EC teacher. I never realized I would love it so much! So I started in California but came to Charlotte with the program. It s a 2 year teaching program. When I was in college I knew I wanted to get into the classroom as soon as possible, so I wanted to find a program where I could teach and get my certification at the same time. So that s why I picked Teach for America. What do you love about being an EC teacher? I love that I get to go into all of the different subject areas. I love that I can communicate with all different teachers, and I love that every day is completely different. You never know what to expect, what challenges I m going to come across and successes. How many students do you teach? I have a caseload of about 25 students that I follow and make sure that they re keeping up. If I don t have them in my classes, I offer support to their teachers in any way I can. But normally, I m following the kids in my class who have an IEP or are just struggling. It is co-taught so we both are team teaching or teaching at the same time. I ll be co-teaching English 1 and 2 and I have my own learning lab. I also tutor students after school. And when is the baby due? October 19th! Stay tuned for news of a future baby Bulldog! 5
