Historical Sketch The Nathan Hale Community School was the desire of Nathan Hale Elementary School s parents. A committee of around forty residents from the Bancroft Street-Uptown Avenue area in Toledo began to meet in early 1974. This group named the Nathan Hale Community School Committee wanted to create a program that would benefit the neighborhood s school aged children. They wished to expand the preexisting Nathan Hale Elementary School and to focus on year-round community building activities. In April of 1974, the committee first brought its plan before the Toledo Board of Education to propose building additions including a gymnasium/auditorium, swimming pool, library/media center, recreation areas and other features. It was not until August of 1975, that the Toledo Board of Education and the City of Toledo agreed to both fund this project. On May 5, 1976, ground was broken on the Nathan Hale School to begin construction of the $1.1 million dollar community center. Committee chairperson Mrs. Bettye Kay was present at the event, with a golden shovel in hand. The doors to Nathan Hale Community School were opened in October 1977. The community program ran until 1981, when the school faced budgetary cuts. In 1994, Mrs. Kay serving as the president of the Nathan Hale Community School Committee, attempted to gain approval from the Toledo Board of Education to apply for Toledo area grants. The board denied this request in May 1994. The committee lacked approval from Nathan Hale s principle Ms. Batson, who had implemented a five year community outreach program herself. In this same year there was a referendum from the Toledo Mayor s Office, giving approval for the community school to reopen in 1995.

Scope and Content Note This collection is divided into six series: Correspondences, Financial Papers, Meetings, Notes, Programs and Publicity. The collection contains information on the beginning of the Nathan Hale Community School Committee and personal notes and letters from Mrs. Bettye Kay over the years 1973-1995. The first series, Correspondences, contains letters to and from Mrs. Kay and the committee for the years 1974-1978 and 1994. The second series, Financial Papers, contains budgetary forms and scholarship requests from 1977-1994. Within this series is also information on building plans for the community school. Also, this contains numerous grant applications from the committee for the Venture Capital School Improvement Grant and the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Act Grant. The third series, Meetings, related to the Nathan Hale Community School Committee s meetings and committee paperwork. This series includes meeting agendas, announcements, contacts lists, surveys and other committee information from the 1974-1979 and 1992-1994. The fourth series, Notes, contains personal notes from Mrs. Kay from the committee meetings, newsletters and a tribute to the Superintendent Frank Dick. The fifth series, Programs, includes the community school s program flyers, services, notes and proposed school schedule. Within the Notes on Programing folder there is a personal note written by Mr. Michael Kay to Mrs. Kay on their anniversary. The sixth series, Publicity, consists of newspaper articles and press releases from the years 1973-1994. There is also a resolution from the Toledo Mayor s Office from the year 1994.
