Rotary District 9800 ROTARY CLUB OF GISBORNE Bulletin 2009-2010 No.37 13th April 2010 Proudly sponsored by Gisborne & District Community Bank LAST WEEK: Pastor Iris Moss Iris, from the Riverside Christian Church, spoke about the Foodbank program conducted as part of their Helping Hand Ministries. Heather Miller, who accompanied Iris, is leader for the volunteers, who are trained to assist people not only with food but also to give support and a listening ear when appropriate. The program is seen as a hand-up -- not a handout. As Heather is the first point of contact, she is able to recognize the needs and provide the appropriate assistance from places such as Cobaw, and other related organizations. Many coming to the centre have built up networks of support and friendships, and some volunteers were once those who came themselves for food and help. Mike & Kay Jones. Iris commented that because of increasing problems with drugs, alcohol and gambling, more people are coming to the centre. Providing fruit and vegetables is difficult; although Iris said Safeway has offered to distribute such items that can no longer be sold, but the centre is still waiting. Distribution of goods is a problem, and efforts are being made to raise money for a van for this purpose; another need is for computers. Iris said this is the only program of its kind that is conducted in the Macedon Ranges Shire. Following question time, Iris was offered Rotary assistance to obtain reconditioned/updated computers, and space on our Club website relating to the Foodbank program. Iris was assured of several other options for support through Rotary that will also be followed up as soon as possible...chairperson, Kay Jones THIS WEEK Planning Cycle Challenge APRIL IS Rotary Magazine MONTH The Rotary Club of Gisborne meets Tuesdays - 6.45 for 7.15 pm at Macedon Family Hotel, Smith St., Macedon

AVENUES OF SERVICE In 1927, at the Belgian Convention, the Rotary Aims & Objectives Plan was proposed and approved. This had followed a discussion between two R.I. Directors at the time, Vivian Carter and Sydney Pascall. They had arrived at the conclusion that Rotary was like a three-laned highway: one lane where a Rotarian could serve his Club, one to serve his Vocation, and one to serve his Community. A year later at the 1928 Minneapolis Convention, International Service was added as the fourth Avenue of Service.
