PAAVAI POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE ANNUAL REPORT 2012 13 I am very much pleased to present the 15 th annual report of Paavai Polytechnic College. The Classes for II & III year were commenced on 4 th June 2012, in a traditional manner with a lot of enthusiasm. A One Day Training Programme for IInd year Automobile Engineering Students was conducted on 14 th June by Ashok Leyland Driver Training Centre at Namakkal. Induction training programme for staff on pedagogy was organized and conducted by the Principal Mr. A.C. Soundarajan from 25 th to 30 th June 2012. The inaugural function for the I st year classes was held on 2 nd July. The function started with Ganesa and Saraswathi Pooja. Thiru CA N.V. Natarajan, Chairman, Paavai Institutions delivered presidential address on the topic Puthu Thuvakkam Puthu Vasantham Students Induction program was conducted from 4 th to 7 th July for the first year General Engineering students about Subject Awareness, Paavai Culture and Behaviour Instruction. 65 th Independence Day was celebrated on 15 th August 2012, in a grand manner. The Chairman of Paavai Institutions hoisted the National Flag and distributed the prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted in connection with 65 th Independence Day. Guruvanakam and Paadha Pooja were performed on behalf of The Teachers Day Celebration on 5 th September 2012. The Placement Training Program was organized from 5 th to 20 th November for all final year students by Placement Officers, Paavai Institutions. Youth Week Festival was celebrated from 3 rd to 7 th January 2013. Various events were conducted and many students participated and got the appreciation certificate. Republic Day was celebrated on 26 th January 2013, in a grand manner. The Chairman of Paavai Institutions hoisted the National Flag and took the March Past Salute. 1

A Special Motivation Programme on Jaliaha Padikkalam Easiaha Jeyikkalam held on 30.01.13 was organized at Paavai Polytechnic by Thiru.Krishnavaradharajan, IDEA Plus, Chennai and Mrs.Anurajan, C.E.O, Sudhandhira Hliday School, Chennai. State Level Technical Symposium Technozium 2013 was conducted on 12 th February 2013. Shri R. Narendran, General Manager/Finance of Aquasub, Coimbatore, was the Guest Speaker. Students from various colleges participated and presented papers. The best papers were awarded with cash prizes. Our Polytechnic College provides an opportunity in budding students to speak on Science and Technology innovations everyday during 1.20 p.m. On completion every Unit, Subject-wise Quiz programmes are conducted for the benefit of the students to gain in depth knowledge in curriculum of study. GUEST LECTURER To improve the subject knowledge of the students, industrial experts from different fields were invited to deliver Guest Lecture. The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a Guest Lecture programme on 11 th July for second year students on the topic Non-Destructive Testing on Metals. Er. R. Vaigundanathan, Section Engineer, Salem Railway Division, Salem, delivered the lecture. The Computer Engineering Association has conducted a Guest Lecture on 14.07.12 for final year students on Advanced Database. The Guest Lecture was delivered by Mr. V. Krishnakumar & Mr. R. Mahendran, Crisp System, Salem. The Civil Engineering students get benefited by a Guest Lecture entitled Principles of Building Construction. It was delivered by Ms. Narmada, HOD/Civil of Paavai College of Technology. On 25 th July, The Computer Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture program for second year students on Real Time Operating System. The Lecture was delivered by Mr. Shanmugavel & Mr. J. Manikandan, HCL Infosystem, Namakkal. 2

The Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture program on 27 th July 2012 for the final year students. The Lecture was delivered by Mr. Andiappan, Assistant Engineer, TNEB, Salem on Circuit Breakers and their Maintenance. A Guest Lecture Program was conducted by the Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department on 27 th July 2012, for second Year students, the topic is General Electrical Safety and Earthing. Mr. P.S. Subramanian, Dean of Paavai Polytechnic Colleges delivered the lecture. The Civil Engineering Department arranged a Guest Lecture on 31 st July. The Lecture was delivered about Recent Trends in Reinforced Cement Concrete by Mr. R. Muruganantham, Assistant Engineer, PWD & Mr. P. Mohan, Assistant Engineer, L & T, Chennai. On 8 th December, The Civil Engineering Department has conducted a Guest Lecture on Basis of Earthquake. A Lecture was delivered by Dr. M. Devi, HOD Civil of Paavai Engineering College. The Computer Engineering Association has conducted a Guest Lecture on 22 nd December for final year students on Search Engine Optimization. The lecture was delivered by Mr. C. Venkatesan, Branch Manager, M/s Access Point, Salem. The students of Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department got benefited on a Guest Lecture entitled Maintenance of Electrical Machines. It was delivered by Mr. C. Mohan, Proprietor, Sri Sowdamiga Electricals, Salem. SPORTS & GAMES Besides Academic activities our students have participated in various tournaments in divisional and State Level competitions and won the prizes. On 12 th & 13 th August 2012, IPAA Salem Divisional Hand Ball Tournament was held at Surabi Polytechnic College, Namakkal. Our college students have participated and came out as Divisional runners. IPAA State Level Basket Tournament was held on 07.09.12 at Paavai Polytechnic College. Our college men team was the Divisional winner. 3

On 5 th & 6 th October State Level Inter Club Men Basket Ball Tournament was held at Gandhi Stadium, Salem. Our college Basket Ball Team participated and won 3 rd Prize. K. Sundareswaran of First Year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student was selected to represent Tamilnadu State Ball Badminton Team in National Level Ball badminton Tournament held at Mangalore from 21 st to 26 th November. Our College student K. Sundareswaran of First Year Electrical & Electronics Engineering student was selected to represent the Tamilnadu State Chief Minister Trophy in Ball Badminton Game on 26.01.2013 held at Madurai. IPAA State Level Basketball Tournament was held on 20 th & 21 st December at Excel Polytechnic College. Our College Team has participated and came out as winners at the State level. A. Tamilarasi of Second Year Computer Engineering student participated in High jump and won 4 th place and V. Aravinth of Second year Mechanical Engineering student participated 200mts and won 2 nd place in IPAA Salem Divisional Level Athletics Tournament held at Thiyagarajar Polytechnic College, Salem from 21.12.12 to 23.12.12. V. Aravinth of second year Mechanical Engineering Student participated in IPAA State Level Athletics Tournament and won 5 th place in 200mts held at Kongunadu Polytechnic College, Thottiyam from 14.0213 to 16.02.13. RRC In connection with RRC celebration, Life Training Programme was conducted at Paavai Polytechnic College on 03.01.13. The resource persons were Thiru.H.Shanthanam, District Manager, RRC, Namakkal, Tmt. S.Suganthi, ICTC Counsellor, GH, Rasipuram and Tmt. P. Vimala, Positive Speaker, Namakkal. RRC Volunteers got benefited through this programme. A One day Inter Polytechnic Level PEER EDUCATORS TRAINING PROGRAMME has been organized at K.S.R Institute of Technology on 18.01.13. 5 RRC Volunteers and Programme Officers were participated. 4

INDUSTRIAL VISIT To gain practical knowledge, Industrial visits have been organized for the students. On 20.07.12, our final year Civil Engineering students visited P.S.C Pole Casting Yard at Mettur. Parents Meeting In order to discuss the academic performance of the students, parents meet has been conducted frequently. To discuss the academic performance of second and Third year students, A Parents Meeting was organized on 28.07.12. About 100 parents had attended the meeting. On 18.08.12 Parents meet was organized for the first year students and discussed their academic performance. About 150 parents had attended the meeting. Parents meet was organized on 19.01.13 to discuss on the odd semester results and action to be taken on further improvement. NSS Activities Under NSS Activity, training program on Life Skills was conducted from 26 th to 28 th July for the I st year students and the Resource person was Mr. Loganathan, HOD/Audio Visuals, Paavai Institutions. On 3 rd August The World Population Day was organized at Paavai Polytechnic College by Mr. C. Loganathan, H.O.D./Audio Visual, Paavai Institutions. About 50 NSS Volunteers participated and got benefited. Free Eye Screening Camp was conducted on 29.08.12 by our NSS Unit at Paavai Polytechnic College. All students got tested. A Blood Donation Camp was organized on 29.08.12 jointly with Lions Club, Salem Airport at Paavai Polytechnic College. Nearly 140 students donated their blood. On 24.09.12 Free Blood Group Screening Camp was conducted by our NSS Unit at Paavai Polytechnic College. The blood groups of all students were tested. 5

A One Day Inter Polytechnic Level NSS DAY was organized on 24.0912 at Muthyammal Polytechnic College by the State NSS Unit for NSS Volunteers and Programme Officer and 5 NSS Volunteers have participated. A Trekking program was organized to Kariyaperumal Karadu on 08.10.13 and 09.10.12 under NSS activity. Nearly 700 students participated. On 06.11.12 Dengu Awareness program was organized at Paavai Polytechnic College. Our NSS Volunteers participated and got benefited. Road Safety Awareness Cycle Rally was conducted on 02.01.13. Our NSS program officer with 50 NSS Volunteers participated in the rally held at Namakkal. On 4 th January Road Safety Celebration had been organized at Paavai Polytechnic College. Programme Officer and NSS Volunteers participated. A One Day Inter Polytechnic Level Soft Skill Development Programme was organized on 31.01.13 at K.S.R. Polytechnic College for NSS Volunteers and Programme Officers. Our College NSS Porgamme Officer with 5 NSS Volunteers participated. A one week NSS Annual Camp was organized by Paavai Polytechnic College at Kurukkapuram village from 01.03.13 to 07.03.13. The Inaugural function was held on 01.03.13. Prof P.S.Subramanian, Dean of Paavai Polytechnic Colleges, Prof A.C.Soundararajan, Principal, Paavai Polytechnic College, Mr.M.Venkatachalam, President, Mr. R. Thangavel, Vice President, Kurukapuram village was present. During the above period the forenoon session, Field works were taken by the NSS Volunteers and in the Afternoon special lectures were arranged on the following topics Self Development of Women, Road safety Awareness, Leadership qualities and Managerial Skills, Rain Water Harvesting, Practice on Yoga, Consumer Awareness Programme, Tree saplings planting were also conducted. NSS special camp Valedictory function was held on 07.03.12 at Kurukapuram village. PAPER PRESETATION Our Students have actively participated in many Symposium and presented Technical papers on various Topics. 6

Final Year Civil Engineering Students P. Boopathi and P. Sridhar presented a paper on Recycling of Waste Materials of Concrete at Muthayammal Polytechnic College on 21.09.12 and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs.1000/- On 24.01.13 M. Yathish and K. Silambarasan of final year Electrical & Electronics Engineering students presented a paper on Power System Protection, Operation and Control at K.S.R Institute of Technology and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1000/- Second Year Electrical & Electronics Engineering students D. Karthy and Syed Muzamil presented a paper on Wireless Power Transmission at K.S.R Polytechnic College and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1,000/- On 9 th January Jithin Mathew and R. Sri Manoj Kumar of Final Year Electronics & Communication Engineering Students presented a paper on Nano Electronics at Vetri Vinayaka Polytecnic College, Musuri and won II Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1,500/- Final Year Computer Engineering Students P.Mohanasilambarasan and R. Balamuralikrishnan presented a paper on CYBROG at K.S.R Polytechnic College on 24.01.13 and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1,000/- V. Manirathinam and N. Gowtham of Final Year Automobile Engineering students presented a paper on Future Cars at Kongunadu Polytechnic College on 21.02.2013 and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs.1000/- Final Year Mechanical Engineering Students M.Mano and K.T. Shinoj presented a paper on Reversed Engineering at PMC Technology, Hosur on 22 nd Jan 2012 and won III Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1000/- On 31.01.13 M.Mano and K.T. Shinoj of Final Year Mechanical Engineering Students presented a paper on Mileage Improving Technique at PGP College, Namakkal and won II Prize with cash Award of Rs. 1,500/- Final Year Mechanical Engineering Students D.Mugilan and D. Manimaran presented a paper on Rapid Prototyping at Muthayammal Polytechnic College on 04.01.13 won II Prize with cash Award of Rs.1,500/- P.Selvakumar and P. Baskaran of Final Year Electrical & Electronics Engineering students presented a paper on Recent Trends in Power Generation at Murugesan Polytechnic College on 01.02.13 and won II prize with cash ward of Rs.1,500/- 7

An OFF Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by MRF Tyres, Chennai at Knowledge Institute of Technology, Kakkapalayam. From our College 2 students got selected. Larsen & Tubro Ltd., Coimbatore has conducted a Campus Recruitment Drive on 11.12.12 at Paavai Polytechnic College. 3 students got selected. On 02.01.13 OFF Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by HCL Infosys Ltd., Chennai at Thiyagaraja Polytechnic College, Salem. From our College 2 students got selected. 8

An OFF Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by Hundai Motor India Ltd., Chennai at Rangeswara Polytechnic College, Pottiredipatty on 05.01.13. From our college 20 students got selected. A Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by L.G. Balakrishnan Brothers Ltd., Karur on 18.01.13 at Paavai Polytechnic College. 23 students got selected. On 06.02.13 Campus Drive has conducted by Care IT Solution Ltd., Chennai at Paavai Polytechnic College. 7 students got selected. A Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by AQUASUB Engineering Private Ltd., Coimbatore on 12.02.13 at Paavai Polytechnic College. 20 students got selected. On 13.02.13 OFF Campus Recruitment Drive was conducted by Ford India Pvt Ltd., Chennai at Excel Polytechnic College, Komarapalayam. From our College 8 students got selected. CANADA INDIA INSTITUTIONAL COOPERATION PROJECT Canada India Institutional Cooperation Project is a Human Resource Development Project. It was launched by an MoU between Canadian Government and Indian Government. Our polytechnic College has been selected under phase XI replication from the year 2009 for implementation. The Project has been focused in developing the following Thrust areas. 1. Strategic Planning 2. Continuing Education 3. Student Services 4. Staff Development 5. Women in Development 6. Facility Development A Strategic Planning group has been formed to prepare the strategic plan for the effective functioning of CIICP thrust areas and to achieve the developments. The revised Plan was developed for the year 2012-2013 and approved for implementation. A Review Meeting was held on 14.07.12 to discuss the new courses proposed, Budget and Remuneration to the Staff members who handle the Continuing Education Classes. 9

In Continuing Education four courses such as Computer Hardware Maintenance & Servicing, Graphics and Animation, Embedded and Computer Hardware & Networking were conducted and 135 students have participated and benefited. The Courses was started during the month of July 2012 and in August 2012. A Review meeting was held on 20.12.12 to discuss the new courses proposed. On 28.01.13, a review meeting was held to discuss the Continuing Education Fund for using institutional development from Continuing Education. In Continuing Education four courses such as Computer Hardware Maintenance And Servicing, Software Testing, Embedded System and Advanced Internet using Tools and Technology were conducted and 116 students have participated and benefited. The Course was started during the month of December 2012 and in January 2013. Training the Trainer on Problem Based Learning and Peer Instruction was conducted on 10.07.12 to 21.07.12 at Mohammed Sadathak Polytechnic College at Keelakarai, Ramanathapuram District. Mr. B.Saravanan Lecturer / DME has participated a three days CEM workshop at Thiyagaraja Polytechnic College, Salem. Two days workshop for Women in Development was organized at Government Polytechnic College, Madurai on 24.08.12 and 25.08.12. Mrs. R. Rajeswari HOD/EEE participated. Mr.T.S. Gowtham Lecturer/DME and Mr.R.Boopathi HOD/Civil Department have participated in two days Industrial Training on Structural Glazing Course at Saint Gobain Glaze Industry, Chennai on 23.08.12 and 24.08.12. On 07.12.12 and 08.12.12 Student Development Training Program organized by Government Polytechnic College, Krishnagiri and Mr. P.RameshKumar HOD/ECE participated. The successful development of this Strategic Plan is a result of encouragement and support given by our management and all our stakeholders. The step by step process of this plan has been followed systematically and in such a manner that on implementation of the plan will certainly act towards the growth of the Polytechnic. 10

A NOTE OF CONCLUSION The academic year 2012-2013 sailed by with varied activities being imprinted in archives of the college. It is an ongoing process and each staff have contributed towards achieving the goals.. We march with a great vision and are truly optimistic in achieving it. My sincere thank goes to our management who lent their helping hand at all moments. I thank all the staff members for their cooperation and service rendered to the students community. 11
