Vol. 59, No. 1 Gainesville, Florida September, 2018 Welcome back UWC Members and Friends of the University Women s Club and the University of Florida. Our Count Down to 100 has started! The UWC Board has been working hard planning a new 2018-2019 year for Club activities and communication. Our original mission statement remains the same: promoting Student Scholarship and opportunities to the University Community. You are invited to bring a friend, neighbor or new Gainesville resident to either of our Fall Open House events. Betsy Trent and Marie-Joelle Thatcher have planned a special day. On Wednesday, September 12, there will be two event times. Please see the invitations on page 3 and be sure to RSVP. If it has slipped your mind to send your 2018-19 dues, there is a registration form on the back of this letter. There will be 2 Six O clock Scholar Dinners this year. Although we will no longer be having Tea and Timely Topics, there is a day trip planned in March and also a May Author Luncheon. Joan Van- Rinsfelt has planned a really very special Scholarship Evening Dinner in April. Be sure to check the UWC Calendar of Events on this page and mark your calendars for our events. All of the Interest Groups will begin their meetings in September. Marie-Joelle Thatcher has agreed to chair the Explorers and she has some really wonderful places to go and people to see. But again, remember it is time to transition. This will be your LAST paper newsletter. ALL further communication will be by emails and our new email newsletters. Please be sure to open and read UWC communications and newsletters and be sure to view and use our spectacular web site: www.universitywomensclub.ufl.edu Please continue to support the UWC and our Scholarships, UF Food Pantry and UF Closet. The University Women s Club invites you and your guests to our Annual Open House, Wednesday, September 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Enjoy a new approach to Open House with sausage & cheese tastings from Fehrenbacher s Butcher Shop, Belgian Chocolates from Christine Chagini and accompanying wines. Adam Fehrenbacher and Christine Chagini will also be available with information on how to incorporate these delicious new delights into your fall entertaining. As you visit with UWC friends and meet new ones we will announce exciting plans for our Count Down to 100 program activities including Six O clock Scholar dinners, Special Interest Groups, new local touring and our annual Scholarship Awards. The University Women s Club (UWC), established in 1922, is open to any persons who are interested in promoting the goals of the University of Florida (UF). We are proud of our record of providing scholarships to undergraduate (15) and graduate (5) students, awarded at the Scholarship Luncheon in April. Each spring, the University Women's Club awards 15 $1,000 scholarships to deserving undergraduate students in honor of the wives of past presidents of the University of Florida as well as wives of distinguished campus leaders. Throughout the year, we enjoy cultural opportunities and social contacts through our two Six O Clock Scholars events, as well as through a wide range of interest groups. University Women s Club also supports the UF community by donating to the UF U Matter, We Care Gator Career Closet and UF Field & Fork, the Pantry. Our efforts provide needed support directly to students, faculty and staff. Count Down to 100 begins this year in anticipation to UWC s Centennial celebration in 2022. If you know someone new to UF or the Gainesville community, please invite them to come join us for wonderful tastings as we reconnect with present friends and welcome new ones to UWC. The University Women s Club Open House will be held at the University Woman's Club located on Woodlawn Drive between SW 2nd Avenue and Stadium Drive. A modified open house small sandwiches and punch will be served- from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for those who can't attend the early evening event.
