Hi All, We had a very good Board meeting last Thursday and although the minutes will be available for all to see at our next meeting on 2 May, due to next Tuesday being Anzac Day, the board ratified the following. Out of the Expo funds we with distribute to our three charities, Heart of Australia, Lift Flight, and the Jimboomba Hall $10,000 to each organisation and replace the money seeded to the Expo back into our community account. I am sure you will all agree this is an excellent result for 2017 Expo which will only improve in 2018 and beyond. I would like to congratulate you all on an outstanding effort put in by you all and single out John Weir and Rhonda Mayo for excellent leadership. Once again Jimboomba Rotary punches above its weight. We also confirmed the budget for our inbound Youth Exchange Program Student Annika Dornbusch from Northfield Minnesota USA whose arrival date is to be confirmed and her first Host Family will be Barry and Jo Thompson. Rotary Club of Jimboomba Jimboomba Rotary Club recently undertook a project to donate fifteen laptop computers and to supply and instal solar power systems into five schools on several islands in Vanuatu. The first installation was carried out at the Tangovawia Primary and Kindy School on the island of Pele. The school was severely impacted by cyclone Pam, with all but one of the buildings being destroyed. Three of the classrooms are now in tents and under tarpaulins and the kindergarten is off campus at the kindergarten teacher s home. There is no electricity or services or retail of any type on the island, so everything must be brought in by small boat. A very small solar system was already in place to power the computer in the principal s office. Although the school already had a computer printer / photocopier, a petrol generator had to be started to operate this machine, and of course the petrol had to be carried to the island The solar system installed consists of two roof mounted solar panels, two storage batteries, a 500 watt inverter (with 240v AC, 5v USB and 12v DC outputs), power points (with 240v and USB outlets) and LED lights installed in the classrooms and office in the main building. This system has sufficient capacity to power the school s photocopier / computer printer.. The inverter was designed and manufactured by an ex-pat Australian who has lived and operated for a number of years in the Solomon Islands. It is designed specifically to meet the requirements of the Islanders (which are not the same as requirements in Australia) and to be compatible with tropical conditions. He has recently opened an outlet in Port Vila to sell and instal solar equipment. All of the solar equipment used in the project was purchased in Vanuatu. Under the tutelage of store manager Charlie, an ex-pat Australian electrician, three local men were trained to instal solar systems. Installation of the other four systems has subsequently been completed and the computers have been distributed. The total cost of the project was approximately $24,000, with $1,260 of the total coming from a Rotary Foundation District Grant. After a day withstanding stomping around on the roof of his school and disruption in his office and being given two computers, the Principal of the Tangovawia School, Mr. Willy, became emotional and unwittingly summed up the outcome of the entire project. He said This will be so good for the children.
