Scholarship Descriptions The availability of these scholarships and the amount of the awards are subject to change. Several scholarships are listed in more than one category. New Full-Time Students American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp Scholarship - $200 award - For a student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019, who is an Ely High School graduate with a strong GPA, an outstanding citizen with a demonstrated good attitude in the classroom, and possesses the ability to get along well with teachers, coaches, or other people in a supervisory role. Bob and Lil Cary Memorial Scholarship Vermilion in the fall of 2019, carrying a minimum of 12 credits, with a GPA of at least 2.5, and studying in one of the following fields: environmental studies, language studies, or journalism. Preference given to students of Native American heritage, however this is not a mandatory requirement and other applicants will be considered. Ely Pickleball Club Scholarship - For a deserving new or returning Vermilion student who is a graduate of Ely or Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower) High School in good academic standing, and working to their potential. Members of the local club provide funding for this scholarship. Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Scholarship Vermilion in the fall of 2019 studying environmental or wilderness coursework and whose philosophy is consistent with the mission of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness: to protect, preserve, and restore the wilderness character of the BWCAW and the Quetico-Superior ecosystem. IDEA Drilling LLC Scholarship Vermilion in the fall of 2019, that has and maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0, and is majoring in geology or related field (such as geoscience, hydrology, soil science, natural resources, etc.). The student must demonstrate potential for success in their chosen field of study, be of good character with a record of good citizenship and school and/or community involvement, and show that their educational opportunities will be enhanced as a result of receiving this scholarship. In the scholarship application, the student needs to write about their education and career goals and how these goals will have a positive impact on society. Everett Laitala Memorial Scholarship - $600 award 1

- For deserving students working to their potential who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019. Must be pursuing studies in the environmental sciences or related field, and show financial need. Lake Country Power Les Beach Memorial Scholarship - For a student new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate a commitment to the community through active involvement in civic affairs or volunteerism in community organizations or programs that enhance the quality of life for the citizens of our region. The student or their parent/guardian must be an active member of Lake Country Power (that they receive electricity from the cooperative). The applicant must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application and the Lake Country Power Scholarship application that includes a short essay. Living the Dream Scholarship Vermilion in the fall of 2019, pursuing a degree in business with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants must be actively involved in student activities and community service projects and have a strong passion for the outdoors. Merle Lunceford Scholarship - One award for a female student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is involved in women s basketball, in good academic standing, able to demonstrate teamwork and leadership, and working to potential. An application is not required. - The second award for a male student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is involved in baseball, in good academic standing, able to demonstrate teamwork and leadership, and working to potential. An application is not required. Joseph and L. Patrick Markovich Scholarship - $500 to $1,500 award with number of awards to be determined Vermilion in the fall of 2019, enrolled in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice, Wildland/Wildlife Law Enforcement, or Seasonal Park Law Enforcement Ranger Training (SPLERT) and has incurred no drug citations. Preference will be given to students who are graduates of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower), however this is not a mandatory requirement and other applicants will be considered. Darlene McDonald Memorial Scholarship - Two $250 awards - For new students entering Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who are in good academic standing and participating in college activities. Minnesota Workforce Development Scholarship - Two $2,500 awards - For new incoming students from Minnesota enrolled full-time (12 or more credits) in Vermilion s Veterinary Technician program. Preference given to students with financial need. The student must complete the VCC Foundation s 2

scholarship application form and submit a short essay on the following topic: A Veterinary Technician is often driven by an individual s personal connection with animals through either family, school experience, scouts, or 4-H. Tell us about your connections to the animals that led you to choose Vet Tech as a profession. The funding, which is provided by the Minnesota State Legislature through a Workforce Development Scholarship Project for the 2019-20 academic year, specifically targets certain sectors of Minnesota s economy. Herb Moline Fine Arts Scholarship - For an outstanding student from Minnesota s Iron Range enrolling at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who is planning a career in the Fine Arts and has demonstrated superior ability and talent. New Student Achievement Scholarship - For new students entering Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who graduate in the spring of 2019 from a Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Manitoba, Canada high school. Priority will be given to one female and one male student with ACT composition scores of 24 or greater or SAT composite scores of 1040 or greater. Other applicants will be considered. Applicants must submit official notification of their ACT or SAT scores with their scholarship application. Northshore Mining/Cliffs Natural Resources Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely, Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower), or Silver Bay High School. Barbara and Bill Rom Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who is majoring in the field of natural resource protection (Wilderness and Park Management, Outdoor Leadership, or Water Resources) and who writes the best paper on Wilderness and Its Importance to Humanity. Applicants must also complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application form. Saint Louis County Mineral Royalties Scholarship - $500 to $2,500 award with number of awards to be determined - For new or continuing Vermilion students who received a high school diploma, or equivalent, while they were a resident of St. Louis County, Minnesota. Students must demonstrate a financial need. Preference will be given to students pursuing educational pathways in designated degree programs that may lead to direct employment opportunities within St. Louis County. Michael S. and Janice Smith Scholarship - $1,500 award Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and studying environmental or wilderness coursework leading to a career in one of those fields. Steger Environmental Science Award - $2,000 Vermilion in the fall of 2019, majoring in environmental sciences/studies, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrating financial need. Both scholarship 3

recommendations must be completed by the applicant s instructors. In the scholarship application, students need to write a short essay about their commitment to environmental issues. Roger and Mary Jane Stubbins Scholarship - $150 award - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019. Sam Swanson Memorial Scholarship - For an Ely High School graduate who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who has a current GPA of 3.0 or higher. Twin City Iron Rangers Association Scholarship - Three $1,000 awards - For students new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who graduated from one of the Arrowhead region schools generally bounded by Grand Rapids, International Falls, Ely, Virginia, and Hibbing. The awards may go to full-time or part-time students. If part-time, preference will be given to single parents, or non-traditional students who have been away from school and returning to earn a degree. The awards are based on financial need and academic achievement. Vermilion Veterans Scholarship - For students enrolled at Vermilion who have served in the U.S. military and/or spouses, parents, or children of those who have served in the U.S. military. Preference will be given to those who served in the Middle Eastern theater of operations. Applicants must be in good academic standing. Incoming and returning Vermilion students are eligible to apply. Returning Full-Time Students Academic Persistence Award - For a returning Vermilion student in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or higher). The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has persevered through unusual circumstances or unexpected hardships while pursuing their education. An application is not required. Bob and Lil Cary Memorial Scholarship Vermilion in the fall of 2019 carrying a minimum of 12 credits, with a GPA of at least 2.5, and studying in one of the following fields: environmental studies, language studies, or journalism. George Covich Memorial Scholarship - For returning Vermilion accounting or business students who are in good academic standing and are active in community service and volunteer work. 4

Ely Branch, American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship - For a returning part-time or full-time female non-traditional student enrolled/accepted in a degree program. Proof of college enrollment will be required. Financial need will be considered. Applicants must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application and the AAUW Scholarship application that includes a short essay. Ely Pickleball Club Scholarship - For a deserving new or returning Vermilion student who is a graduate of Ely or Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower) High School in good academic standing, and working to their potential. Members of the local club provide funding for this scholarship. Ely Rotary Club William Mills Memorial Scholarship - $750 award - For a student who will be returning to Vermilion for their second year in the fall of 2019, is active in community service and volunteer work, and is involved in athletics. Bert Hoyer Memorial NRT Internship Scholarship - For a deserving student in Vermilion s Natural Resource Technology program participating in an internship in the summer of 2019. An application is not required. Mary Hutar Memorial Scholarship - $100 award - For a male student with a good academic average who will be continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower). Special consideration will be given to students who plan to pursue careers in writing, natural resource education, environmental or natural resource fields. Applicants must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application and submit a 750-word essay on one of the following subjects: the work of Sigurd Olson, the significance of Listening Point, or the meaning of wilderness to the writer. The writer must list source material for the essay. The writing will be evaluated on content, clarity, and editing. The use of personal experience and a guided tour of Listening Point are encouraged. Darlene McDonald Memorial Scholarship - Two $250 awards - For new students entering Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who are in good academic standing and participating in college activities. Herb Moline Biology Scholarship - For an outstanding student who will be returning to Vermilion for their second year in the fall of 2019 and is committed to the field of Biology, Biology Education, or the Medical Sciences (medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or medical research). Natural Resources Education Group Scholarship - For a deserving student returning to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who is enrolled in the Natural Resource Technology AAS degree program. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be active in Vermilion s Forestry/Wildlife Club. Two scholarship recommendation forms must be completed by program instructors showing verification of active club participation. Erik Ness Memorial Scholarship - For a student who in the fall of 2019 will be enrolled in the second year of Vermilion s Wilderness and Park Management AAS Degree Program, the Natural Resource Technology AAS Degree Program, or the Fisheries and Wildlife Management AS Degree Program. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0. The student must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application form and submit a 600-word essay describing their passion for the wilderness and the outdoors and how they act upon it. North Country Bowhunters Chapter of Safari Club International is a major sponsor of this scholarship fund. Northshore Mining/Cliffs Natural Resources Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely, Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower), or Silver Bay High School. 7

Charles D. Novak Scholarship - For a returning Vermilion student enrolled in the Liberal Arts and Sciences/Associate in Arts Degree program. Minimum GPA of 2.5 is required. Barbara and Bill Rom Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who is majoring in the field of natural resource protection (Wilderness and Park Management, Outdoor Leadership, or Water Resources) and who writes the best paper on Wilderness and Its Importance to Humanity. Applicants must also complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application form. Anne Rozman Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower). Wayne Ruud Law Enforcement Scholarship - $750 award - For a student in their second year of Vermilion s Law Enforcement program who is among the top of their class in core academics and displays outstanding future potential in law enforcement. No application is required. Christy Skraba Scholarship - For a student continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019, whose major field of study is accounting or business, and who is active in the outdoors. Supporters of the Vermilion Water Program Scholarship - For a student continuing in the fall of 2019 fulltime in Vermilion s Water Resource Program who demonstrates initiative and a desire to learn. Priority will be given to students who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, actively participate in the Water Club, possess the same passion for water resources as the donors of this scholarship, and will consider donating to this scholarship fund once they graduate and become financially stable. Sam Swanson Memorial Scholarship - For an Ely High School graduate new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who has a current GPA of 3.0 or higher. Twin Metals Scholarship - Two $1,000 awards - For returning Vermilion students enrolled in the Water Resources Program or Natural Resource Technology Program who are in good academic standing (2.0 GPA or higher), who demonstrate a strong work ethic and are working to their potential. Applicants must demonstrate that their educational opportunities will be enhanced as a result of receiving this scholarship. VCC Advisory Board Scholarship - Two $650 awards - For students who will be continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and are enrolled full-time (12 or more credits). Selection based on GPA and involvement in campus and community activities. VCC Faculty Scholarship - Four $500 awards - Candidates for this scholarship are nominated by VCC faculty based on relevant campus or community participation, leadership, and academic performance or drive. An application is not required. VCC Foundation Scholarship - For students continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who are working to their potential, receiving no or limited support through VCC Foundation scholarships, and who showed strong effort in the scholarship application process. Vermilion Range Trap Club Scholarship - For a returning Vermilion student in good academic standing who is involved in clay target (trap) shooting and who demonstrates good sportsmanship and leadership at the college and in the community. The Vermilion Trap Club provides funding for the scholarship. 9

Vermilion Veterans Scholarship - For students enrolled at Vermilion who have served in the U.S. military and/or spouses, parents, or children of persons who have served in the U.S. military. Preference will be given to those who served in the Middle Eastern theater of operations. Applicants must be in good academic standing. Incoming and returning Vermilion students are eligible to apply. VFW Post 2717 Scholarship - For a student who is continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is enrolled full-time (12 or more credits), a graduate of Ely High School (graduates of other high schools will be considered), an honorably discharged veteran, or has a parent or grandparent who is an honorably discharged veteran. The applicant must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application form and submit a 150 to 200 word essay on the topic What I Think about Veteran s Entitlements and Benefits. John E. and Lorraine Zupancich Memorial Scholarship - For a student who is continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 involved in football, is in good academic standing, demonstrates leadership and teamwork, and works to the best of their ability. Part-Time and Non-Traditional Students Ely Branch, American Association of University Women (AAUW) Scholarship - For a returning part-time or full-time female non-traditional student enrolled/accepted in a degree program. Proof of enrollment will be required. Financial need will be considered. Applicants must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application and the AAUW Scholarship application that includes a short essay. Trustee Emeritus Erickson Part-time Student Scholarship - $300 award - For a working adult student attending Vermilion in the fall of 2019 on a parttime basis (1-11 credits). Preference will be given to students who are working full or part-time. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and be in good academic standing. Twin City Iron Rangers Association Scholarship - Three $1,000 awards - For students new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who graduated from one of the Arrowhead region schools generally bounded by Grand Rapids, International Falls, Ely, Virginia, and Hibbing. The awards may go to full-time or part-time students. If part-time, preference will be given to single parents, or non-traditional students who have been away from school and returning to earn a degree. The award is based on financial need and academic achievement. 10

Area High School Graduates American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp Scholarship - $200 award - For a student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019, who is an Ely High School graduate with a strong GPA, an outstanding citizen with a demonstrated good attitude in the classroom, and possesses the ability to get along well with teachers, coaches, or other people in a supervisory role. Ely Pickleball Club Scholarship - For a deserving new or returning Vermilion student who is a graduate of Ely or Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower) High School in good academic standing, and working to their potential. Members of the local club provide funding for this scholarship. Mary Hutar Memorial Scholarship - $100 award - For a male student with a good academic average who will be continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower). Kiwanis Club of Ely Scholarship - $1,500 award - For a student graduating from Vermilion in the spring of 2019 who is also a graduate of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower). Involvement in volunteer service activities is a selection consideration. The recipient must be attending a four-year college or university in the fall of 2019. Proof of enrollment will be required. Lake Country Power Les Beach Memorial Scholarship - For a student new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher and demonstrate a commitment to the community through active involvement in civic affairs or volunteerism in community organizations or programs that enhance the quality of life for the citizens of our region. The student or their parent/guardian must be an active member of Lake Country Power (that they receive electricity from the cooperative). The applicant must complete the VCC Foundation s scholarship application and the Lake Country Power Scholarship application that includes a short essay. Joseph and L. Patrick Markovich Scholarship - $500 to $1,500 award with number of awards to be determined Vermilion in the fall of 2019, enrolled in Law Enforcement/Criminal Justice, Wildland/Wildlife Law Enforcement, or Seasonal Park Law Enforcement Ranger Training (SPLERT) and has incurred no drug citations. Preference will be given to students who are graduates of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School (Babbitt/Tower), however this is not a mandatory requirement and other applicants will be considered. Father Mihelcic Memorial Scholarship - $100 award - For a student who will graduate from Vermilion in the spring of 2019 who is also a graduate of Ely High School or Northeast Range High School 11

Herb Moline Fine Arts Scholarship - For an outstanding student from the Iron Range enrolling at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 who is planning a career in the Fine Arts and has demonstrated superior ability and talent. Northshore Mining/Cliffs Natural Resources Scholarship - For a deserving student who will be new to Vermilion in the fall of 2019 or continuing at Vermilion in the fall of 2019 and is a graduate of Ely, Northeast Range (Babbitt/Tower), or Silver Bay High School. Joseph and Theresa Popesh Scholarship - $3,000 award with possible renewal for a second year - For a student who will graduate from Vermilion in the spring of 2019 who is also a graduate of Ely High School. The recipient must show financial need, be working to his or her academic potential, and be attending a four-year college or university in the fall of 2019 and continuing in the fall of 2020. If students are awarded a scholarship for their junior year, they will be eligible for a scholarship for their senior year provided they continue to meet the scholarship criteria. Saint Louis County Mineral Royalties Scholarship - $500 to $2,500 award with number of awards to be determined - For accepted (new or continuing) Vermilion students who received a high school diploma, or equivalent, while they were a resident of St. Louis County, Minnesota. Preference will be given to students pursuing educational pathways in designated degree programs that may lead to direct employment opportunities within St. Louis County.
