10 years of L Oreal fellowships in Latvia Since 2005, ceremonial awarding of the L Oreal Latvia fellowships For Women in Science, with support from the UNESCO Latvian National Commission and the Latvian Academy of Sciences, is annually held at the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Over the course of ten years, financial support for research has been granted to 27 female scientists, with several of the former fellowship holders now having already become LAS members. All these years the role of the honorary patroness of the fellowship has been assumed by the former President of Latvia, LAS Full Member, Professor Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. Marija Dunce, laureate of 2011, defended her PhD thesis on 3 March 2014 and was granted the degree of Dr.phys. Ten major scientific achievements in Latvia are designated annually by the Latvian Academy of Sciences Depiction of the authors of achievements in 2013 together with the LAS leaders after the awarding of diplomas on 8 January 2014. Svetlana Čornaja, professor at the Rīga Technical University, leader of the group of authors of the achievement in chemistry in 2012. Rūsiņš Mārtiņš Freivalds, author of one of the achievements in 2012, professor at the University of Latvia, also winner of the prize for the best scientific article at the Alan Turing Centenary Conference in Manchester. Professor Jānis Stradiņš 80 Chemist and historian of science Professor Jānis Stradiņš is the former President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, an eminent public figure, inspirer of the Third Awakening of Latvia. On 12 13 September 2011, the Paul Walden 7th Symposium on Organic Chemistry with wide international participation was held at the Rīga Technical University. A memorial plaque Citation of Chemical Breakthrough was presented to the Rīga Technical University by the American Chemical Society in honour of the Walden inversion discovered in 1896, which was set up at the Faculty of Material Science and Applied Chemistry. On 10 February 2012, on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of the Rīga-born distinguished mathematician and space theoretician Mstislav Keldysh, a visit to the Latvian Academy of Sciences was paid by representatives from the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Memorial Study Room of M.
