HOUSTON AREA PO BOX 1082 HOUSTON TX 77251-1082 www.moaahoustonarea.com Newsletter to Members Vol. XLVIII No.5 May 2010 NEXT MEETING SATURDAY, June 26, 2010 Briar Club President s Message The last meeting was what I call a coincidence attendance figure. It seems that everyone who will miss a meeting or two each year decided to skip the April luncheon, as we had only 22 attendees. My compliments to those attending and hearing Chaplain (Capt.-Navy) Kerry Magee speak about the Gettysburg address by President Lincoln. For the others, come on out for the June luncheon for another great speech and bring another with you. Some members have volunteered to present the MOAA Leadership and Academic Medal at their nearby high schools. It is a very satisfying task and gives more meaning to the presentation day as the ROTC cadet stands before you. I hope that each of you consider health and time of day and let our ROTC Chairman, LTC Wilbur Mac McConico, know that you can handle one or two in your neighborhood. Your president volunteered to do five presentations. Three came in one week; that was two too many (next year, one a weekday). Juanita Ritter is still hospitalized. Your prayers are still needed and requested. We re doing well selling chances for the December cruise. Our Chairman/Leglislative Rep. Bill Taylor has a report elsewhere in this May issue. We all might need to purchase another chance to put us over the top. We discuss and vote to accept updated bylaws at the June meeting. Have your questions and recommendations ready. A reminder: The chapter will have a joint meeting with the Military Affairs Committee (Commander Eugene Tulich) on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at 6 p.m. One Reliant Center. James C. Endowment Fund Our treasurer, Martin Harris, who is holding the raffle funds for the cruise, says we are three-eighths of the way there to pay for the cruise. This is good news. There is still a lot of time to get in on the raffle for this wonderful cruise that will benefit the Corps of Cadets. Once the cost of the cruise is handled, then we can start doing some good for the Corps. Your Board of Directors on 21 April voted to once again include all Rice NROTC students, not only in the Endowment Fund, but also in the Scholarship Fund on an equal one-third basis with the Army and Air Force. All of you Navy and Marine types can now feel confident that your funds will go equally to all schools. There had been some question raised as to Rice s participation in the Scholarship Fund. This is now cleared up. Recently our President, Jim Causey, our ROTC Membership Chairman Mac McConico, and I attended the Spring Review at the University of Houston. All branches were represented: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force. Your Scholarship Funds were gratefully received by the winning Cadets. So continue to support our cruise with your MONEY, and maybe you will get lucky. William Taylor Cpt. USA Ret. From Our Chaplain SHALOM! PEACE BE WITH YOU! Please take time this Memorial Day to prayerfully reflect on the ultimate sacrifices so many have made to maintain and insure our continued freedom and liberty. Remember our fallen heroes over the life of our beloved America. Lest we forget. Please continue to hold Juanita and Wayne Ritter in your daily prayers. God Bless! CAPT Kerry Magee Kerry B. Honor Thy Veterans The Honor Flight Network is working hard to ensure veterans of all U.S. wars get to see their memorials on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. MOAA documented the veterans trip from the airport to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Va., and was there when they saw for the first time their World War II Memorial the next day. After the veterans arrived at the memorial, executives from HBO, the miniseries The Pacific, American Airlines, and Marriott Hotels and government dignitaries held a ceremony to honor those who were part of the greatest generation. MOAA staff helped greet about 100 World War II veterans as they arrived March 10 at Reagan National Airport, Washington, D.C., on their Honor Flight. Benefits Available to You Information is available at www.moaa.org concerning benefits. Navigating the complex maze of military benefits and entitlements can be challenging. As an MOAA member, you have unlimited access to a team of highly trained benefits professionals equipped to help make sure you receive the military benefits you ve earned. You may view the latest cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) and compare them with previous years to prevent inflation s erosion of your purchasing power. You may use quick and easy calculators to get the right figures when making important decisions on debt management, mortgage comparisons, retirement planning, and more. Students and families may learn more about MOAA s grants and scholarships for undergraduate students, and other matters concerning educational assistance. In the Legislative Action Center, MOAA has information about its eight full-time lobbyists dedicated to protecting the interests of all members of the uniformed services active duty and retired, National Guard and Reserve, and veterans and their families and survivors. Information and frequently asked questions will assist you in understanding the burial benefits military officers or their surviving spouses may be eligible for. Military retirees and their family members may use military travel and lodging facilities on a space available basis. Take every advantage of your MOAA membership and your benefits as a veteran!
