CMR High School Scholarship News January 2018-2019 2019 Financial Aid Information The 2018-19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms for the current senior class are available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The information needed on the FAFSA form will be based on you and your parent s 2017 tax information. Priority deadline for most schools in December 1. Encourage your parents to file your FAFSA now! A number of financial aid programs are available if you qualify: College Work-Study, Pell Grants, Supplemental Education Opportunities Grants, Stafford Loan Programs, Perkins Loans, Approved Veterans Training, State Grants and Loans, Academic Scholarships, Cooperative Education Plans, College Funds, Athletic Scholarships, and Minority Scholarships. See your local lender (banks, credit unions, etc.) or college financial aid directors of the schools that are of interest. Time to Register - Selective Service and You All male United States citizens and male aliens residing in the U. S. and its territories must register within the period starting 30 days before, and ending 30 days after, their 18th birthday. Log on to www.sss.gov and you can get yourself registered in about 5 minutes. If you have any questions or need assistance, please see Mrs. Lowry in the counseling office. Montana University System Honor Scholarship All seniors were mailed information about the MUS Honor Scholarship before Christmas. The MUS Honor Scholarship is a 4-year renewable scholarship that waives the recipient s tuition when used at an eligible campus. Applying for the scholarship is a multi-step process. You must complete each of the following steps by the deadline in order for your application to be considered complete. 1. Take the ACT or SAT test by December of your senior year. 2. Apply to and be accepted by one of the eligible campuses 3. Register at www.mus.edu/scholarships 4. Have Mrs. Lowry complete the section of the application to verify that you are on track to meet the Rigorous Core Requirement. 5. Mail the signed application along with a copy of your acceptance letter, proof/certification of your ACT or SAT score, and your 7 th semester high school transcript to the office of Student Financial Services postmarked by March 15 th. MSU Billings/City College Scholarships MSU Billings and City College MSU offer several scholarships to students wishing to attend. The online scholarship application is available at msubillings.academicworks.com. One application qualifies students for this and hundreds of other awards. Deadline is February 1, 2019. 1
Husted Endowed Scholarship This $2,800 scholarship is available to students who have declared a program of study at the College of Business. Student must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and meet other criteria as noted. Scholarship may be renewable. Apply by February 1, 2019 at msubillings.academicworks.com Local Scholarships Jennifer Joy Astrin Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by Dr. Charles and Judith Astrin in memory of their daughter, Jennifer Joy. Jennifer died at the age of 18 in a tragic traffic accident in 1992. She attended C.M. Russell High School and was an active member of D.E.C.A. This is a four-year renewable scholarship. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and carry at least 12 credits to receive the award in future years. -Must be a GFPS graduating senior -Net family income must fall at or below the MT Median Family income or $44,222. -This 4-year renewable scholarship is for any field of study and may be used at colleges or universities in or out of state. Jennings Family Scholarship The Great Falls Public Schools Foundation Scholarship was established in 2012 to honor a CMR senior who exemplifies the true Rustler spirit of being a well-rounded student. The donor is a graduate of CMR High School who sees the value of excellence in education and wants to give back to the community. The scholarship is a two-year scholarship worth $12,500. The recipient will receive $6,250 for the first year, and he/she must maintain a 3.2 GPA and carry at least 12 credits to receive the second year award of $6,250. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 at the end of 7 semesters, must show school and community involvement, rigorous coursework by taking Honors and Advanced Placement courses, and must write an essay. Great Falls School District Leadership Scholarship A scholarship is being offered for seniors who meet the following criteria: 3.0 GPA or better Proof of financial need Letter of recommendation from a teacher and a non-family member Good citizenship Must attend a Montana college Jaraczeski Family Scholarship This Scholarship was initiated in November 2004 after Richard Jaraczeski died after a long battle with cancer. He highly valued well-rounded young adults who demonstrated integrity, care for others, character, strength and determination. This scholarship is intended to reward one graduating senior who exhibits these values and who is serious about receiving a higher education. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better. If a student has a GPA of 2.5-2.8 and has overcome any special circumstances or obstacles and meets the other requirements of this scholarship, he or she will be considered for this scholarship. Applicants must have participated in organized physical and non-physical activities 3 out of the 4 years of high school. The activities are not limited to school sponsored activities. Eidel Family Scholarship The Eidel family scholarship was established to honor a CMR senior who exemplifies the true Rustler spirit of being a well-rounded student. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and must show school and community involvement. Hoppock/Avery Memorial Scholarship The Hoppock Memorial Scholarship has been established by Susan Avery in recognition of her mother s encouragement and support as she followed her dream of becoming a doctor. The applicant must show financial need, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, demonstrate good citizenship and pursue a degree with a math or science base. Dean Riggin Memorial Music Scholarship The essence of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity for students who show a dedication to the field of music, diligence, work ethic, and the ability to work hard toward a goal. This scholarship cannot be awarded to a student who has received any other scholarship in excess of $1,000. Any student who is awarded this scholarship will receive approximately $500 for the school year immediately following graduation. Applications are available in the Advisement Center. Jack and Rosann Johnson Scholarship A couple who wish to remain anonymous and who are outstanding supporters of CMR football has provided an endowment gift to fund the Jack and Rosann Scholarship. This is a four-year renewable scholarship and will be awarded each year. Applicants must be a CMR senior, have a GPA of at least 3.0, participate in at least one sport, be involved in at least one school/community activity and write an essay. Schoesser Scholarship This particular scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to pursue his or her post-secondary education at an accredited institution, who exhibits motivation and action in making his or her dreams a reality. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and be involved in at least one extracurricular activity each year of high school. Lowry Family Scholarship The Lowry Family Scholarship was established in 2018 by Gary and Marie Lowry in recognition of their two children and six grandchildren who all graduated from CM Russell High School. Gary and Marie see the value of excellence in education and athletic and extra-curricular activities and are grateful for the education their children, grandchildren and currently great grandchildren have received in Great Falls Public Schools. They want to honor two C.M.R. students who plan to continue their education and have excelled as a Rustler. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded and is not restricted to an in-state school. Must be a graduating CMR senior. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must have athletic, extra-curricular and/or school involvement. Lillian Knudson-Johnson Scholarship Lillian Knudson-Johnson was very supportive of youth and higher education. Lillian passed away Aug. 18, 2007, from the West Nile Virus. Upon her death, it was decided by her husband Al and the Eastern Star Chapter to create a fund to encourage Great Falls graduates to continue with their education. Must exhibit reasonable citizenship, diligence, and hard work. Must be a GFH or CMR graduate (alternates years). Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. Must submit two letters of recommendation (by non-family members) outlining the student s character. Must participate in at least one school sponsored sport for at least three out of four years. Steve Olson Orchestra Scholarship The Steve Olson Orchestra, formed in September 2015, made its debut with the album Merry Christmas from Great Falls, Montana, featuring vocalist Joel Corda. The Steve Olson Orchestra Scholarship fund, part of the Great Falls Public Schools Foundation, was created to help college-bound students reach their dreams and goals! Two (2) $700.00 scholarships will be awarded to two graduating seniors who have dedicated much of their time to the musical arts and the betterment of the Great Falls area community. Eligibility Requirements: Be a member of your school band, choir, or orchestra program. 3.0 cumulative GPA (end of 3rd quarter). Be accepted to a college or university at the time of application. CTE Scholarship This scholarship was set up to increase enrollment within the CTE program. One $500 and one $250 scholarship will be given to two graduating seniors from CMR. From the applications, the top three candidates will go on to an interview round, from which the recipient will be chosen. Janie Nicholson Education Scholarship Two CMR students who plan on majoring in education will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Preference will be given to students attending MSU. MISC SCHOLARSHIPS Defense Commissary Agency Scholarship The Scholarships for Military Children program is celebrating its fourteenth year of outreach to the military community. Each year the program awards hundreds of scholarships to qualified seniors planning to enroll in a four-year program of studies the following fall, or to college students already enrolled in a four-year program. Applications are available on the website at: www.militaryscholar.org after December 13. Montana Community Foundation Scholarship Applications for the Montana community Foundation s scholarship program are now available online at https://www.mtcf.org/grants-scholarships/apply-for-a-scholarship. Awards range from between $500 - $5,000 and all awards are designated to specifically benefit Montana students. Most applications are due by March 16 th. Check out the website to see if you qualify. Youth Serve Montana Scholarship The application period for the 2019 Youth Serve Montana Scholarship is now open. High school seniors who have volunteered 100 hours in their community and plan on attending a Montana Campus Compact Institution are eligible to apply for this $1,000 scholarship. Applications due before January 31, 2019 and are available at http://serve.mt.gov/servemt/youth-serve-montana-scholarships Great Falls Legion of Honor Scholarship Legion of Honor Foundation will award two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors from Great Falls. Applicant must be from Cascade County and they (or an immediate family member) must have an affiliation with a Masonic Organization. Applications are available in the Advisement Center and are due to Mrs. Pence before February 15, 2019. AISES Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to American Indian students studying BA or graduate programs in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology or computer science. Deadline is March 31, 2019. Apply at http://www.aises.org/scholarships ART SCHOLARSHIPS Out West/Young Masters Phil & Karen Korell Scholarship-This scholarship, worth up to $2,500, will go to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a degree in art education, fine arts, graphic arts and design or architecture. This scholarship can be used in state or out. It is a multi-faceted educational program that includes but is not limited to participation in Western Art Week. Scholarship requirements can be picked up in the Advisement Center. Deadline to submit application/portfolio is February 1, 2019. Zach Babat Memorial Fine Art Scholarship-Two $500 scholarships will be awarded in mid-february to a graduating senior who will be pursuing an education in fine art or fine art education. Student will submit a two-dimensional project for judging. Pick up an application in the Advisement Center. Deadline to submit application is January 31, 2019. MSU Art Scholarship-MSU Bozeman offers several scholarships to students interested in a career in art. Visit their website at http://www.montana.edu/admissions/scholarships/ and search scholarships. *Be mindful to proofread scholarships it it does matter! Scholarships should be word processed.
