One f the values f the SON is Ethical Cmmunity, which states, The Schl f Nursing is cmmitted t the develpment f a prfessinal nurse wh will practice within the Nursing Cde f Ethics and whse practice is guided by the values f altruism, autnmy, human dignity, integrity and scial justice. Our gal is t graduate students wh will practice with these inherent values, and t ensure the prfessin cntinues t be accuntable t and trusted by the cmmunities we serve. Therefre, FSU SON has develped and will uphld a Cde f Cnduct that serves as an addendum t the University Student Cde f Cnduct. Selected sectins frm the University Cde f Student Cnduct are prvided belw as these are als addressed within the SON Cde f Cnduct. The web addresses are prvided within this dcument as a reminder f FSU examples f persnal miscnduct, and the prcedures and sanctins that may fllw at the university level as well: Disciplinary Prcedures Ferris State University s prcedures fr impsing disciplinary sanctins are designed t prvide students with the guarantees f due prcess and prcedural fairness, t ensure equal prtectin fr all students, and t prvide fr the impsitin f similar sanctins fr similar acts f miscnduct. At the same time, the prcedures reflect the need t be cncerned abut the individual student invlved in a particular case. The prcedures therefre prvide that the impsitin f disciplinary sanctins must als be based upn a cnsideratin f all the circumstances in a particular case, including a student s prir recrd f miscnduct, if any. Additinally, the University may discipline a student fr the fllwing acts f reprted persnal miscnduct that are nt cmmitted n University prperty r acts that arise frm University activities that are being cnducted ff the University campus r if the miscnduct a) undermines the security f the University cmmunity, b) adversely affects the Ferris State University cmmunity and/r the pursuit f its bjectives, r c) cmprmises the integrity f the educatinal prcess. Such acts include, but are nt limited t, the fllwing: Actins That Endanger Actins that endanger the student, the University cmmunity, r the academic prcess.
2 Cmputer and Infrmatin System Misuse Unauthrized and/r inapprpriate use f cmputers is prhibited. Such use includes, but is nt limited t: damaging r altering recrds r prgrams, furnishing false infrmatin r invading the privacy f anther user by using files, prgrams, r data withut permissin, engaging in disruptive and annying behavir, r engaging in any unauthrized use f r access t cmputer hardware, sftware, accunts, r passwrds. Additinally, any and all actins in vilatin f the Digital Millennium Cpyright Act are prhibited. Harassment Behavir that creates a hstile r intimidating envirnment in which verbal r physical cnduct, because f its severity r persistence, is likely t significantly interfere with an individual s wrk r educatin, r adversely affect a persn s living cnditins. Verbal Abuse f Anther Persn, Including the Fllwing: e. An expressed r implied threat t: i. The University may impse ther sanctins singularly r in cmbinatin with any f thse listed belw. The University recgnizes tw kinds f sanctins: administrative (inactive) and educatinal, and they are ften cmbined in an effrt t hld students accuntable while als prviding resurces t aid in a student s success. ANA CODE OF ETHICS & SOCIAL NETWORKING POLICY In additin, the SON uphlds the ANA Cde f Ethics fr Nurses, and cnsiders behavir that disregards this cde as negatively impacting nt nly the prgram, but the prfessin f nursing. Therefre, students wh vilate the University Cde f Student Cnduct may be subject t nt nly university apprpriate sanctins, but als t the SON s plicy that addresses vilatins f the Cde f Ethics fr Nurses. Cnsideratin f ANA s Principles fr Scial Netwrking have als been applied t this plicy. The fllwing excerpts frm the ANA s Cde f Ethics and ANA s Scial Netwrking Plicy are prvided belw t supprt the SON s expected Cde f Cnduct. ANA Cde f Ethics fr Nurses, Prvisin 1.5, States: Relatinships with clleagues and thers: The principle f respect fr thers extends t all individuals with whm the nurse interacts. The nurse maintains cmpassinate and caring relatinships with clleagues and thers with a cmmitment t the fair treatment f individuals, t integrity-preserving cmprmise, and t reslving cnflict. Nurses functin in many rles, including direct care prvider, administratr, educatr, researcher, and cnsultant. In each f these rles, the nurse treats clleagues, emplyees, assistants, and students with respect and cmpassin. This standard f cnduct precludes any and all prejudicial actins, any frm f harassment r threatening behavir, r disregard fr the effect f ne s actins n thers. The nurse values the distinctive cntributin f individuals r grups, and cllabrates t meet the shared gal f prviding quality health services (American Nurses Assciatin, 2015). ANA s Principles fr Scial Netwrking (2011) d. Principle 5. As the patient s advcate, nurses have an ethical bligatin t take apprpriate actin regarding instances f questinable healthcare delivery at an individual r systems level that reflect incmpetent, unethical, illegal, r impaired practice. Nurses wh view scial media cntent psted by a clleague that vilates ethical r legal standards shuld first bring the questinable cntent t the attentin f the clleague s that the individual can take apprpriate actin. If the psting culd threaten a patient s health, welfare, r right t privacy regarding health infrmatin, the nurse has the bligatin t reprt the matter t a supervisr r designated persn within the institutin r entity fr fllw-up. If the questinable practice is nt addressed in the emplyment setting and seriusly jepardizes the patient s safety
4 and well-being, the nurse may need t reprt the prblem t external authrities. Accurate reprting and factual dcumentatin nt merely pinin shuld always supprt such respnsible actins. Principle 6. Nurses are encuraged t participate in the develpment f plicies and prcedures in their institutins and rganizatins fr handling reprts f nline cnduct that may raise legal cncerns r be prfessinally unethical. Such fficial channels can prtect the rights f thse participating and can ffer remedial actin fr the patient, while ffering fairness, supprt, and nnpunitive crrectin and training fr a nurse s inadvertent mistakes. (ANA, 2011) ANA s Principles fr Scial Netwrking and the Nurse, Fundatin fr the Principles fr Scial Netwrking, p. 7 Nursing s Scial Plicy Statement (ANA, 2010) ANA s Principles fr Scial Netwrking and the Nurse Fundatin fr the Principles fr Scial Netwrking, p. 13 This fundatinal dcument describes the essence f the nursing prfessin that is bth valued within sciety and is uniquely accuntable t that sciety. The authrity fr nursing, as fr ther prfessins f trust, is based n scial respnsibility, which in turn derives frm nursing s scial cntract wherein a mutually beneficial relatinship exists between sciety and the nursing prfessin: [S]ciety validates the existence f the prfessin thrugh licensure, public affirmatin, and legal and legislative parameters. Nursing s respnse is t prvide care t all wh are in need, regardless f their cultural, scial, r ecnmic standing. (p. 5) Nursing s Scial Plicy Statement: The Essence f the Prfessin describes the nursing prfessin as particularly fcused n establishing effective wrking relatinships and cllabrative effrts essential t accmplish its health-riented missin. (p. 7) SON ADDENDUMS TO FSU CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT Thus, the fllwing are addendums t the Ferris State University Cde f Student Cnduct fr Ferris State University SON cnduct plicy: Students may be in vilatin f the Nursing Cde f Ethics Prvisin 1.5 by any f the nted miscnducts nted in the University Cde f Student Cnduct, and may be dismissed frm the prgram as a result. It is imprtant that students familiarize themselves with the University Cde f Student Cnduct as the fllwing are nly examples f miscnduct specific t the nursing prgram and d nt cnstitute a cmprehensive list f all vilatins that might fall under this prvisin. 1. Overt r implied verbal r written threats stated t and/r abut a peer/faculty/staff member, which wuld place a reasnable persn in fear f harm. This may be in the frm f scial media (i.e. Facebk, Instagram, email, r ther cmmunicatin). Such threats and/r verbal/written abuse are in direct vilatin f the Nursing Cde f Ethics. Such threats/abuse/behavir will be evaluated by the SON faculty/staff, reprted t the University Plice and/r the University Office f Student Cnduct with sanctins cnferred as deemed apprpriate. In additin, the SON reserves the right t cnfer sanctins, up t and including dismissal frm the prgram if the student is in vilatin f the Nursing Cde f Ethics.
5 2. Students and faculty may nt take any patient recrds, ntes, r any identifying data ut f a clinical agency n paper [must be shredded] r electrnically. If reprting r discussing in persn r in writing a clinical situatin with an instructr r with peers, mit identifying infrmatin. Students will cnfrm t the guidelines f the Health Insurance Prtability & Accuntability Act (HIPAA). Failure t cmply with HIPAA guidelines may result in prgram dismissal. 3. Additinally, it is the plicy f the FSU SON that students will cnduct themselves prfessinally and will nt take any frm f phtgraph r digital image in the clinical setting fr any reasn. Additinally, students are t refrain frm discussing patient/clinical situatins in public venues, including Facebk, Instagram, r similar nline arenas (even if client names are nt used). Failure t abide by this plicy may result in dismissal frm the nursing prgram. Prcedural Due Prcess Students in all cases will be affrded adequate prcedural due prcess. The student will in all cases, be affrded the pprtunity t ffer his/her versin f events t the Directr f the SON and/r faculty r staff invlved with the situatin. Once a decisin is made, an appeal f the decisin can be made t the Dean f the Cllege f Health Prfessins, and that decisin will be based n the guidelines set frth in this plicy and will be final.
